Daniel Defense M4 patrol rifle
Last year my agency decided it was time that we all carried a patrol rifle (as in all officers both uniformed and detectives). What with school shootings and what not.
The Lieutenant in charge of the firearms program went to Daniel Defense and got the estimate for seventy M4 rifles along with the iron sights, aimpoint and weapons lights. They then had another lower estimate with just the iron sights and the light and finally just the iron sights.
The Chief then went in front of the city council and requested $200,000 from the city council. That was the sum required for the top estimate. Admin was prepared to then ask for the lower sums. Everybody figured the council would freak. Instead it passed without a single squawk. So I now carry a patrol rifle with a three point sling, three magazines and a carrying case. Nice rifle. Too rich for my personal finances, but it's kind of neat to have a weapon from the highest bidder.

Hope you never have to use it but glad they saw fit to not scrimp on critical equipment.

I'm glad you were issued quality gear and I pray that you never need to use it in school.

Good stuff for the worst case situation but hope you only use it to qualify once a year.

Daniel Defense is a very high quality manufacturer.
My personal AR is a Colt lower with a DD lightweight barrel upper, mid-length gas system.

Quality matters. Buy once, cry once. Bravo for your administration. Seen far too many go cheap.

We've all been to range several times. We've done different types of live fire training as well as building clearing tactics without live ammo.

Nothing like giving the people the right tool for the job.
Good for you guys, very glad to see it. What kind of duty ammo are they authorizing for you?

Good for you, good for your Department, good for the council. It is a shame that average patrol law enforcement officers have to be armed with such hardware. Be safe out there and I hope you never have to take that M-4 out of your trunk in the line of duty.

Top quality rifle with top quality optics. Amazing that got past the council, hard to find that many people nowadays with some common sense.
I am on cadre at our state LE academy. We completed a week long “ Patrol Rifle Instructors” school three weeks ago, we do two per year and they are always full. The M-4 has pretty well replaced the shotgun for LE in this state.
Congrat’s on your new gear. Be safe.

I'd be surprised if that rifle does not come out daily. School murders of the type that make the news are pretty uncommon, but there are a lot of calls at which a long gun is the better choice. A pistol is what one carries because they have no reason to expect a problem. If one has reason to expect a problem, the first choice is to be somewhere else. LE does not get that option, so the next best is to take a long gun.
It's a pretty common and reasonable option for LE, and for a large percentage of potential needs, better than the shotgun. If for some odd reason I ended up in uniform again, an 11.5" inch AR with a can, a good light, and an Aimpoint would be just part of the scenery. Contrary to the popular image, more agencies should have had them back in the 80s.
