Folding Knife Issue
Trying to convince myself not to order another pocket knife I decided to try to take a picture of what I currently have on hand. I do not buy expensive knives, in my opinion, but I may not need any more users. Not a great picture, but it kept me from ordering another knife. I may have finally bought knives faster than I lost or broke them.

Better get busy! You can lose a couple a year for quite some time. I have found my fair share on stream banks. So get out there!

I own twice as many folding knives. Just start building up your fixed blade collection instead. That's what I'm doing.

Pretty good hoard ya got there. I usually buy average ones like Buck or Sog in the $50 or under price range but I just got started. So many choices and different steels it get mind boggling. Am sure I will add another couple eventually. Just keep reading reviews. It can get addicting!

You lack both of the designs that were the two most popular for about a century, a stockman and a trapper. The stockman's sheep's foot blade is a good substitute for a carpenter's knife. That additional blade is more useful to me than a quick opening master blade. Trappers are still popular among small farmers and ranchers. An old school multi-blade would add more variety to your collection than another modern knife would.
The issue is resolved. You NEED a large stockman.

There are 39 knives pictured and I have one more, a two blade stainless pen knife of one of my grandfather's which dates to the 1950s. Of the 40 folding knives I own five have slip joint blades and 35 have locking blades. All five of the slip joint knives were gifts. A Trapper Lock would tempt me.
What's tempting me right now is several dealers have certain Buck models 20% off. A Buck Model 501 Duke has been on my list for months. The Buck Marksman is available for under $100 (my price limit) and I've been eyeing that model for some time.
Laying the knives out like this forces me to realize that of the 40 pocket knives I already have there are only five that I carry regularly. User grade knives that do not get used are a waste of money. But... I want them so much!

Bought a ten dollar knife the last time I was in sportsmans warehouse cause it was cute.Not sure what kind of steel "surgical stainless" is,but I can only get it to sort of shaving sharp ;-)

The O P and I have typed back forth in last year I like him , have been focused on more of the traditional knifes Case , Bucks , as typed before I like my quick assist knifes as well. Bit here lately its been the classics for me. Also got say found new love for Swiss Army knifes too . Can't get much more classic than that

I still do my predawn five mile walks. After seeing Mrs. Snubbyfan's Endura serrated I got one myself. That knife goes with me every morning. It is an amazing cutter.

Not to be mean but it looks more like an accumulation than a collection. I thought a collection was supposed to have a theme. Personally I like the Queen #11 and others of that size and style.

You are correct. It's what I have accumulated. The closest thing to a theme is light weight FRN handles, thumb opening, quality steel. Well I like my Spydercos... and use them.

If we're thinking the same knife, it is a Gerber Model 600. I believe it has a 420HC stainless blade (similar to Buck & Case). I believe that was on sale at Midway shortly after 9/11/01 when I ordered 1,000 pieces of Remington primed 9 mm brass for an unbelievably low price. I think the Gerber knife added $12 or $14 to that order. I have the belt sheath that came with it. Its handle is too thick to pocket carry. I used to keep it in the console of my truck, and used it to help skin out a couple of deer and feral hogs over the years. It's just a tool, but I like it.

Why would anyone try to convince themselves NOT to buy a knife? You can never have too many. My collection won't fit on your counter and I wouldn't even try.
I have knives everywhere. There are at least 6 within arms reach at the moment. I have some in each car, the motorcycle, my desk at work, range bag, back pack...

Nice accumulation! I tend to get a variety as the urge strikes me. I do have a couple of Leatherman tools knives and a Swiss Army large hunter that I don’t know the proper name of,you could add them and add to the diversity .�� If you can afford them get them is what I use to justify.

I too am a knife addict. concentrating on Bayonets, Tactical, Folders, Victorinox, Case and Bowies. I too take pictures and remind myself that I do not need anymore knives. It worked. I only bought 3 knives today. Maybe a third of the collection below. Good luck!

A good knife is a companion and helper in life. A cheap knife is a false bargain.
I have carried a knife every day since I was 8 years old, starting out with the Official Cub Scout Model. Since then I have used Shrade, Buck, Gerber, Wenger, and a few others. For the past 15 years my pocket knife has been a Gerber liner-lock with thumb-stud and pocket clip, which I have found to be very handy for most chores around the house or shop, and adequate for field-dressing a deer or two. I keep a Wenger Swiss Army knife handy in the truck, and a Leatherman multi-tool also.
Still have my very old Shrade Old Timer "SharpFinger" skinning knife, bought new about 45 years ago for maybe $7 at KMart. Probably the best little blade ever for hunting, field-dressing, skinning, etc. Takes and holds an edge better than just about anything I have experienced.
US Army provided me with Camillus orange handled "rigger's" knife with a push-button clip blade "switchblade" and a hooked blade for cutting parachute risers and rigging. Here in Colorado switchblades were illegal as anything for many years, so I have kept it in the safe deposit box. I expect that a 1960's vintage Army-issue switchblade should have a respectable value these days, so my grandkids can argue about who gets that one.

I have a drawer full of what I call the $5.00 specials, every gunshow has knife sellers with the boxes marked $5.00 I have found some good usable, and interesting knives by going through them. I also find good parts knives as well.

I got this one when I was 10:
It was my first knife, but my love affair with knives started before that. My father taught me that a gentleman always has a pocket knife with him. I'm sure it's happened, but I don't remember a day when I didn't have a knife with me since I got that one on my 10th birthday.
My dad took me to Nichol's Sporting Goods on Lee Rd in Shaker Heights, OH and told me I could pick any knife in the case. That's the one I chose. I picked it because it had metal scales instead of plastic. It was a good choice.

Due to hand problems I now need one-hand-opening knives--have trouble opening blades on a slipjoint with decent springs. I recently bought a Kershaw Leek and liked it, but the smooth stainless scales/frame proved too slick for safe operation with my buggered up fingers. I gave it to a neighbor and bought an OSO Sweet. Nice little knife, easy to handle. It alternates with a Spyderco Endura for carrying. I still have several fixed blades and a few slipjoints. Will probably give most of the latter group to my sister, a knife nut who can't afford to buy knives. Most of my accumulation, including a nice themed collection of Boker 93's, is long gone.
