I don't carry this German Boker often, but it always gets a comment when I do.

Best wishes,

Default Winchester Pocket Knife

Most cherished Knife I have.

Grandma showed me how to trap and shoot
Gophers.

Used the old Farm Behind the Door
Winchester 67 .22LR Single Shot Bolt Action
and the Winchester Knife to cut the Tails off.

Sorry no pretty knife pictures from this guy.

Enjoy and thank you for taking the time
to view.

Default pocket knives

Here are some various Case, a Buck, a "KENT", and on the right is a really good old 3 blade that was my Dad's - no brand name, just "Made in USA".

I have literally used that one old yellow Case almost to death and have carried all of them quite a lot, so they are definitely not pristine !

I call that yellow Case handle material "banana pudding yellow".

The old KENT is probably an inexpensive old knife, but has really cool handle material and nice, thin hollow ground blades that sharpen beautifully.

Have enjoyed this thread !

An older photo of my favorite daily pocketknife, a Case Baby Butterbean with red bone handle. This is the second one I've owned. Was eating a nice steak by the light a camp fire one evening, using the first red bone Baby Butterbean to cut the meat. Went missing after that occasion. Three months later I was poking around in the ashes of that campfire and discovered my lost pocketknife. I'd rolled up the paper plate after finishing the meal and tossed it on the fire with the little knife inside.

I frequently hear people, some of them here, decry the fact that men and boys no longer carry knives, while in "the good old days" all men and boys and many women and girls carried them.

I understand that dismay, and share it. I remember some years ago reading a news story about a woman who fell on an escalator and got her clothing caught in the machinery somehow. Horrified spectators tried to free her, but she was fatally strangled because not one person in the crowd had a knife.

But to a degree I understand why carrying knives is relatively rare, and it's not entirely a PC thing. We have made life too damn convenient and "advanced".

When did you last see someone sharpen a pencil with a knife, or even use a pencil? When did you last come home from the grocery with two kinds of unsliced cheese, and bacon and hamburger, wrapped in butcher paper tied with string? When did you last whittle a toothpick from a twig, or see old and some not so old guys sitting around and making fine wood shavings as they shot the bull about their "good old days"? How often do most most people buy bread that isn't sliced, or bake their own?

Too convenient, although the way some merchandise is bubble-packed today either demands a good sharp knife or bolt cutters. Too sanitary to have meat or cheese handled by humans and wrapped to order in paper. I have to admit that although I would never be without at least one pocketknife, my occasions to use one are fewer than they used to be.

I believe a great many people alive today, including many of my younger sister's Boomer generation, simply grew up not being taught the value and importance of a good knife on one's person. Certainly a lot of the next generation didn't pass the lesson along to their kids. No need, we're too advanced and sanitary.

Ah, progress.

An alarming number of the people, of the last couple of generations of people in the USA, conduct their lives, in the manner that you describe. I believe that their abilities, ambition, and desire to be self sufficient, or the lack thereof, are due to mommy, and daddy's loving words, "Mommy, and Daddy'l do it for you". I for one, pity them, and when the need comes, to provide for themselves, they are going to have a "hard row to hoe". You can bet your bottom dollar on it, the need will certainly come. It'll be scary, but, interesting to see those kiddies running our USA. It scares the "bejaybirds" out of me, just thinking about it. This wouldn't be a good time to go back to our roots, and replace some of the things that have been removed from our society, would it? Just my 2¢ worth. Pardon the rant.

It was carried by both Ken Warner and B.R. Hughes, famous knife writers. They could have probably carried any pocket knife they wanted, many being free or at deep discount to them.

I think that's also the model in Schrade's ads at, Playboy. I think they were the only knife manufacturer to advertise in that big, slick magazine. Playboy's circulation was then much greater, and I think an ad cost a lot. They wanted a model that would appeal to the educated urban buyer, not to Farmer Joe. That was the knife they chose.

I'd know the model number if I saw it. Check the blade tangs. The model may be marked on them.
The long Turkish Clip blade isn't typical of stockman patterns, but gets into tight places well. My father-in-law used his to fillet small panfish, like crappie and sand bass.

The Staglon handles were a form of DuPont Delrin, and look more like real stag than any other fakes I've seen. I have a King Ranch stockman and a small stockman with those handles.
The model number is 887UH. I also have and used to carry the much larger, square-ended 885UH, but it tears up pockets quickly whereas the more rounded 887 doesn’t.

Those may be “recent” model numbers and there may have been earlier, different numbers for both of those knives. I don’t know about that. In any case, I liked both patterns and still have them somewhere, but the Victorinox Executive has taken over in my world since about 1972, if I recall correctly.

The little lock-blade I use now is made by Kershaw but I can’t recall its name. I see 1555TI on the blade and Hinderer Design. It’s a nice little knife for when one needs a sturdier blade. I also have and use one of the newer versions of the Victorinox Ranger, which has a locking blade, and I like a lot, but’s far too big for the pocket unless you are going to be doing something that makes you think you’ll need it.

Here is my Rams Horn Weidmannsheil. They are made in Germany and use the name of the traditional German greeting to hunters.

I wish that I would have had, sense enough to do that also. It would have saved, my getting back, many broken, knives, and tools, and completely loosing, many, knives, books, tools, and many other things, over the years. That brings up a common fallacy, used, and believed by borrowers, that "whatever is borrowed, forever after, belongs to the borrower". I even had borrowers sign a "borrow" list, but that didn't work ether, as the "Borrowers fallacy" was always invoked, upon my making a request for something that was borrowed to be returned. Iv'e chalked that large list, of broken, and lost things, to "Gained Experience", or "Live & Learn". That's my 2¢ worth on my, many years of, unsuccessful dealing with "Borrowers".

My mom and dad tried to teach me this lesson from Shakespeare:

“Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend.”

Hamlet: Act-I, Scene-III

But it took me many years to understand the wisdom of the Bard,..

Best Regards, Les

[QUOTE=nachogrande;140068863]If the trapper is the single bladed folder I'm thinking of. It had an easy to sharpen (as all the OT's did) blade and a nice pocket fitting shape & wt.

Always loved this style, see my previous post on Queen #11s. Case also makes the 048 pattern and Boker the 93 both in a variety of scales. The fit a pocket and a hand very nicely.

I think Ram's Horn look terrific as knife handles. It comes in so many variations and textures. Unfortunately, I don't have one of these in my collection yet, but I am on the lookout for the perfect example.

Opinel No. 6. I did the mods today between stints with the mower. Not entirely happy with the result, but it is serviceable.

Here is a picture of something a little different. It is a traditional patterned knife with a slightly more modern look to it. What do you think?

Added to my collection this week is a Case Mini-Trapper, Model 6207. It has red jigged bone scales and Case's proprietary CV carbon steel blades. It's a pretty little thing, well made except for the edge grind on the spay blade. Out of the box, that blade was so poorly ground it would not cut paper. After a session on my Sharpmaker it now has two very sharp slip joint blades. The price was right at $35.

Schrade and Uncle Henry Knives (vintage ones) were actually pretty good knives for commonly available products sold at very reasonable prices. I've still got at least 5 of them and they are still excellent knives and have never failed to perform. Today, they reside back in their original boxes (I always keep the boxes and instruction sheets) and I will one day pass them down. I've got soooo many pocket knives around I don't know exactly how many I own. At least 60 or so and all in different places - LOL! It might be time for me to actually gather them up and organize them.

Default Some more folders ...

Took a couple photos of some more folders that I have in my accumulation. The first picture contains two Shrade Walden knives and two knives marked just Shrade, all of the same pattern. The knife at the top is a carbon steel Shrade I bought new with celluloid scales. I carried and used it a lot. The knife on the left is an NIB Shrade Walden Uncle Henry stainless that I found and bought from a display well after SW was replaced by just Shrade. This knife was no longer made for sale at the time. The knife on the right is a SW carbon steel that I bought, carried, used, and sharpened a LOT! The knife on the bottom is a SW stainless with jigged bone scales that I bought new and used very lightly.

The second photo contains two very different knives. The top knife I found in a box of various knives at a gun show. It has white bone scales and is marked "Giesent & Forsthoff", Solingen, Germany. The small blade is actually a screw driver with a very precise square tip, also pretty thin, and both blades are made of excellent steel. The bottom knife is a common military style issue made by Camillus that I have had in my possession since I was a boy. It's a good handy knife for it's purpose.

Kinda been here before, but it used to be if a boy couldn't be trusted with a pocket knife by the time he was eight or nine years old he was considered a wastrel by adults and a failure among his peers. I have been carrying a some variation of the classic Scout knife for better than 60 years, mostly a GI Camillus. When I have to dress "nice," I like something a little smaller in the pocket like the Buck Cadet.

I’ve been carrying this one lately. An older Imperial knife made in the USA. Has that good ol’ carbon steel that sharpens nicely. These might not be considered high end knives but most of the Imperial’s I’ve carried have outperformed and outlasted a lot of the more expensive blades I own.

I never was a big pocket knife guy till a couple months ago. A relative told me he wanted sell off a bunch of knives. I ended up buying fifty or so new in box Case knives. Now I'm in the process of figuring out which ones I want to keep and selling off the rest.

I’ve shared these before but here they are again. These are all Case knives from the 1930’s throught the late 1960’s. None of these are carried.

One of these was my edc during high school, back in the 1960's when it was basically assumed that there was a knife in every boy's pocket. I still have it in a drawer somewhere.

I happened to see some photos of Barlow style knives here when scrolling through this thread again. That reminded me that I have a few that I'm pretty fond of. I don't carry them often, but these carry easily and they are good knives. So I dug them out and took a photo to share with you guys. There are so very many great photos of great folders here. Y'all are guys after my own heart! Hope you enjoy these.

The top knife is a Boker Tree Brand with yellow bone scales. It's an older one and it's a great pocket knife. The second one is Canal Steet Cutlery with brown bone scales.CS was the knife maker that rose from the ashes of Shrade and Shrade Walden and only lasted for a somewhat short time. This is not an old knife but it is well made and also carries nicely in a pocket. The bottom knife is a relatively inexpensive Barlow style made by A.G. Russell that has yellow plastic scales and great steel for an every day using knife. I've carried this one quite a bit in a horizontal belt sheath and I have used it quite a lot. I like it! It's also a lock back. I tend to like the longer bolsters on two of these knives. I think they make the Barlow style look very nice and balanced. See what you think. BTW, I pictured one of my favorite arrow heads for you at no extra charge!
