Default Post a Picture of a Traditional Pocketknife

Post a picture(s) of a traditional pocketknife. It can be your favorite, your newest, your oldest, your ugliest, your most sentimental, your EDC, or whatever you want. Most gun folks are knife folks too, so let's see what you have. There are only about a million different makers over the last few hundred years. I'll get it started:

I don't have a "tradition" of carrying pocket knives, but for several years I've clipped a Gerber Paraframe in my pocket. Turns out to be a very useful tool and gets more action than I would have thought, before I started carrying a knife.

Here's a few.
Buck brown bone 300's. Last three are different Buck trapper models. I tend to favor stockman patterns with Trappers a close second. Traditional Sodbuster is third.

Sodbuster style Queen Country Cousin.

Case yellow Trapper

Case snake something or other Trapper. I like the long nail nick.

Been carrying a pocketknife since I was about 10....... so 54 years..................

Transitioned away from a 'traditional pocketknife" about 12 years ago.... currently carry a Benchmade "North Fork Folder"....... the only thing that gets used more is my single cell (AAA) Fenix LD02 flashlight.

My boys use their phones for light ...... don't know how the 'younger generations" get along without a blade.

I work part time as a courier. We (my wife and I) regularly deliver to people who need to inspect/inventory what we have delivered. I can't tell you how many I have seen them trying to cut packing tape with a set of keys, or a ballpoint pen. When I offer to cut the tape for them, they generally (especially the men) reply with a no thanks, I always do it this way or something along that line. The women are almost universally appreciative of the offer (no risk of breaking a nail I'm sure).

But I have yet to encounter one who has a pocket knife.

I carry a Swiss Army knives, but don't have any pictures of them.

When it comes to knives, I have some of all!
The traditional knives are like traditional handguns.
Then there are black gun and new age black knives!

50 years for me. This is a great thread but frankly it made me sort of sad and realize something—both my son and I are daily knife carriers, and we have a number out in our daily rotation, and we could not even find a single traditional pocket knife at home this morning. I thought back to when I bought my first Kershaw Leek after they originally came out—with pocket clip, speed safe assisted opening, etc. The beloved Case Stockman was put away in a counter-top box and has long been forgotten. My son is a ZT man and I primarily carry Piranha and ZT on weekends. We both do Canadian Belt Knives hunting.

I haven’t carried a “conventional pocketknife” (which for me would be a three-blade stockman) since I was in high school. One day I discovered the “Executive” model Swiss Army knife. It has been so perfect for me that I am rarely without it. Once in a great while I carry both the Executive and a smallish lock-blade knife, but normally the larger knives are in the car or the truck where I can get to them, but not in my pocket. Oddly enough, I don’t have a picture handy that shows my Executive - sorry!

That's what I like about the Benchmade "North Fork" 2.9" blade and ''wood scales" best of the modern lock-blade/one hand opening features without the Tacticoooool look

That would be new age blade running under false colors, as they say in pirate-sailing books.
Sort of like this one.

Default Memories

This old knife brings back some special memories. A couple of years before the Twin Towers Trade Center was destroyed, my wife and I had bought tickets, for a tour of the trade center, and were standing in line to take the tour, when a guard asked if we were carrying pocket knives. When I showed him my "Benchmade Elishewitz", he said "Oh, you'll have to leave that here with me. When I gave him the knife, he just laid it on top of his cubical, where anyone could just pick it up and walk away with it. I told him "No" I won't leave it there for anyone to just walk away with, and cashed in our tour tickets, and didn't take the tour. I still have the Knife, but, we don't have the Twin Towers.

Most of my newer traditional blades are locked in a safe.
So I arranged some users in my bedroom knife misc drawer.
The game is - name the traditional knives.

Default IMAGINE THIS.

IF I knew how to post a pic, you would be viewing a 1960's Kamp-King boy scouts folding pocket knife. I bought 2 for 5$ at our gun clubs LAST & FINAL swap meet, they needed a good cleaning, but are as sharp OR SHARPER than any other in my drawer-O-knives. Today it's a Fred Peron 1 1/2" fixed blade neck knife 24/7 and it gets used app a dozen times a day easy. A Gerber Leek in a pocket often when going out. The Boy scout & Leatherman wave get used quite often as well, but they stay in my desk.

Default "Lotta Use"

This Old, hard used knife, a J.A.Henckles buffalo horn Whittler, in the 1950s era, was in my pocket, any time that I had pants on. It was my constant companion for many years. the tip of one blade was broken off by a long deceased friend, and used afterward as a "scraper/screw driver". It brings back lots of memories.

A Case XX that my dad was given as a Christmas present in the early 60’s, he carried and used it for decades. I inherited it. Second one is an Imperial that I got when I was in grade school. Third one is my edc German army knife.

I carry an Escort. It's smaller and has only a blade and file/screwdriver. Super handy.

My other traditional is a Case II pen 620033. Another one that disappears until needed.

At this stage of life, trade the corkscrew for a metal file.

This Old Timer and I have been constant companions for a couple decades. She is a cheap, but reliable companion.
We have opened tens of thousands bales of hay and been expelled from some nice places together. We were expelled from the Capitol building in Harrisburg, PA, and labeled as potential terrorists at the Washington Monument where we had to briefly part company, and I was made to wear a sign during the tour identifying me as a threat.
Yep, we have had a lot of good times together. If she could talk I'm certain she'd remind me of many more.....

Yep, we have had a lot of good times together. If she could talk I'm certain she'd remind me of many more.....

Yes, at least three times.......
Honestly, I have no idea how many times, but "a lot" would be a fair descriptor. Like I said, we've been around the block a couple times together.

Default "Fish'in Knife"

This old KA-BAR "Fish'in" was part of the tackle in my fish'in tackle box, for about 65 years, until I quit fish'in.

That’s a Western Fishing Knife in my group picture.
Never actually used it, don’t recall when-where I acquired it.

Default Woodcarving Knife

I just got this heavy, well built, Schrade Oldtimer knife, a wood carving knife, that might become my favorite to carry while working, knife.

Not surprised. That is a new design. I only started seeing them within the last year or so.

My thoughts are traditional means two hand opener without a pocket clip, and maybe include multiple blades. I believe some exclude stainless steel, locking blades, one hand opening, and pockets clips. Hey, knives are mostly tools and very primitive weapons at best so here's some of what I have.

A Shrade Old Timer slip joint hunter dating to the early 1970s. USA made with carbon steel. Pictured with an A.G. Russell slip joint pill splitter. Japanese made with VG-10 stainless steel.

A Fox spear point lockback. Italian made of 440 C stainless. A Case Mini-Copperlock. USA made with Case's proprietary CV a carbon steel. A Buck 503 Prince. USA made with 420 HC stainless.

What I had in my pockets when I first read this post was a Spyderco Positron. Taiwanese made flipper. USA made Crucible CPM-S30V stainless blade steel. Carbon fiber handle/scales, and I have no idea of the source country of the carbon fiber. I also was carrying a Spyderco Manbug on my house key ring. The Manbug is Japanese made with a fiberglass reinforced nylon handle. The blade steel, HAP-40, is a laminate made by Japan's Hitachi. It has carbon tool steel core and cutting edge with a softer more rust resistant outer layer of 410 stainless.

Traditional in my mind is sharp and pointy, I do not get too hung up on when the first cutting tool was created.

Here's an "Uncle Henry", one of the older ones, that I carry about every day. It's hanging out with my Baby Chief and a 1970s Regulation Police...good company!

Best Regards, Les

At this stage of my life, I still pull a cork occasionally. But usually don’t need a corkscrew to accomplish that. So the metal file would be fine. Cheers.

NEVER used that one useless "blade" to scale a fish, or remove a hook. A Marlin spike would make more sense for a fishing/boating type knife IMO.

Default Ultimate Uses

This one, the "Victorinox Swiss Champ Deluxe SOS Kit", puts all other knife offerings to shame with it's number of uses, and accessories to do them with. I've had this one for 33 years, and haven't used 10% of it's blades, gewgaws, hoopykacks, and accessories, or found many emergency applications that it couldn't handle, within reason.
