Default Ruger Security 9 and EC9s

I'm not real familiar with Ruger, but never heard any bad about them. I bought the Security 9 and it is a very comfortable gun to hold and shoot...made for my hands. Just wondered if anyone had any bad experiences with it. Also, I'd like to get the EC9s. It has a real safety (I carry a Glock 42 pocket gun, but I don't like their "Safety") Both are very inexpensive so I just want honest feedback on the pistols.(The Rugers). The Security 9, like I said, is a very comfortable shooter; accurate at 25 yds. Haven't bought the pocket EC9s yet. Any help would be appreciated. And for a pocket carry, is there anything better for the money and, more importantly, reliable? Thank yinz guys! Jeff T., PGH PA

I have an LC9s, the slightly more expensive version of the EC9. It's very reliable and very concealable. The trigger is among the best striker fired pistols available. It is, however, not fun to shoot. The grip is extremely narrow, and for that reason it is painful for me to shoot the pistol. I have heard from several others that have had similar experiences.

You may or may not find it painful to fire. We all have different hand sizes and shapes as well as different pain tolerances. I put a Hogue handall grip on mine in the hopes of making it more comfortable to shoot. It still causes me pain to shoot it. No other 9mm is painful for me to shoot. Only the little Ruger.

You may find it an acceptable tradeoff - a pistol that conceals easily, but is painful to shoot. At times I have as well. Really the only way to find out is to shoot one. I've thought about selling mine, but they are so cheap now that used ones aren't worth much at all. So I guess I'll keep it - at least for now.

I carry a 1st gen LC9 every day. Very similar to the LC9s/EC9s with a slightly longer heavier revolver-like trigger (I prefer it that way).

No problem with the recoil when shooting it, and I shoot it pretty well at SD distances.

Bought an EC9S about a month ago, have about 200 rounds through it. As noted above it has a very decent trigger pull, akin to a good DA revolver. I have small hands, and I really like the grip contour along with the longer baseplate. There is recoil, but not all that much with std. velocity loads, and a lot less than the 442 it may replace. It's very quick and accurate close in and ok at a distance too. VERY shootable.

It drops nicely into a pants pocket and you don't even know it's there, even at the end of a long day.

I'm impressed so far, and believe me I've sent a lot of lesser guns down the road.

If you buy the EC9 or LC9 think about getting extended factory magazines
and Hogue grip sleeve both help control recoil and ad in more accurate shooting.

I think the Security 9 is one of the best budget friendly new firearms available. Nice trigger, two mags, appropriate grip size to accommodate most hands, nice texturing, what's not to like? Well there is the takedown functionality and the magazine disconnect safety but for sub $300 it's really hard to beat.

The EC9s is essentially the LC9s with one magazine and milled sights but costs about $100-150 less. I wouldn't mind seeing a EC9s pro which would remove the safety and magazine disconnect. I'd gladly shoot and carry either the LC9s or EC9s over a Shield.

Ruger has been doing some pretty good things lately.

Regrettably, I must concur with everything Dennis has said. I too tried a Hogue handall and it helped with 115gr ammo, but 147gr was still nasty. I might try some of that lightweight hypervelocity ammo in the gun to see if that helps. If it doesn't, the LC9s will be replaced by a Kahr CW9 which is MUCH more comfortable to shoot.

I thank you all above. I don't get to shoot a lot, living in the city. I depend on shooting ranges and their rules; almost always use PA State Game Lands' ranges...closest one 30 minute drive, and on the weekend, forget it. I really like the feel of the Security9, just hope it holds up for me! Best gun for the money as far as the few I've bought and how nice it shoots. Kinda why I have no problem carrying the pocket gun with a real safety instead of the G42. I don't want to end up becoming popular on the news or Facebook shooting my thigh because I'm too stupid to practice pulling out a gun without my finger in the trigger guard. Going to have to at least hold & shoot the EC9s. There are plenty on the market, so I'm not dead set on it yet, but I want a safety and reliability hopefully in one pistol. Thanks all!
