New Colt Cobra
A few weeks ago I walked into a gun shop to discover a lightly used Cobra for $600 OTD with a Desantis holster worth $65. I really enjoy shooting it, and overall I am even more pleased than I thought I would be. It’s shown with some Herretts.

Congratulations. I honestly prefer the new Colt Cobra to the old because it's Stainless Steel and has an ejector rod housing.
Also, AFAIK the older Colt Cobras weren't rated for +P whereas the new ones are.

New Colt Cobra
Here’s a new Cobra in Badger grips. Carried this the other day.
A Detective in Herrett’s
....and a nickel 1975 Cobra in Herrett’s with a 1973 Cobra in birdseye maple Badger grips.

The new Cobra’s may not have any hand fitting like the old ones, but don’t kid yourself... The DA trigger on every one I’ve handled puts my old d-frames to shame. I can only imagine what it would be like if a good gunsmith got ahold of it and worked some magic on the internals.
Just sucks that the older grips do not fit. Not sure who’s bright idea that was.

Some grips fit reasonably well but, you’re right, many don’t fit right. Also, would have been nice if Colt included a grip pin.

I looked at one, but the cocking stroke (I shoot SA because of arthritis, can't pull the trigger through) was too hard, and I had an accidental fire (all contained on the range, only I realized it) because I couldn't deal with pulling the hammer back to full cocked. Not sure if it was to do with the hammer size, weight, don't know.
I went home for research, and when I was by the next day, the one for sale was gone. And it was .38 only, all of mine are .357, so there is ammo compatibility to consider.
If it had been there, I probably would have bought it out of general principle, but I was saved the choice.
Enjoy!!

Nice new Colts. I've also been thinking of the new Cobra. The only thing holding me back is the financial status of Colt Manufacturing Company, LLC. If Colt gets into any more trouble, it good very easily go bottoms up. And then we're stuck with a non-collectible revolver with unknow sources of service and parts. Does anyone know the real ( not the internet ) situation over at Colt ??

Correct you are but the new snake is not near as light as its predecessor.
Personally if it was up to me to name the NEW offering it would be called something like Detective Special +P.
I have both a Dick Special .38 and a real Cobra .38 and this new gun is not a Cobra AFAIC. Good bet that I will get one in the future in spite of its wrong name as I have a fondness for snubbies!

Agree! If they wanted to stay with the snake theme, why not just pick a new snake name?

Reference the new Colt Cobra:
Is the trigger guard not rounded or is it because I have not had my coffee yet ?

The last model of the real Cobra is +P rated, Colt recommended that it be sent to Colt or checked by a competent gunsmith after 1000 rounds. My 1974 Cobra is my everyday carry. 16 ozs. vs 25 ozs. is a big difference. And yes it has 6 Speer 135 gr. for short barrel 38 +Ps JHPs in it. The trigger is smooth as satin, I can't imagine the new Cobra has one that's better but I have yet to handle one.

The trigger guard is not rounded. It was purposely designed to work in many other holsters but allow a larger opening for gloved fingers.

My only original Colt is a 2nd issue Detective Special with a 3rd issue barrel. My New Colt Cobra is a better shooter with a better trigger.

I wound up with one just after they came out. Pretty good shooter and actually had a much slicker action than I expected. Traded it away to a guy who wanted it really bad. Shot another one a few weeks ago and the difference was huge. The 2nd one had a much rougher da that was almost gritty feeling and sa was not very good either. I’ve heard stories of the Cobras being inconsistent and my experience seems to back them up. I do like the hi viz front sight that can be changed easily. Would never trade my 3” mod 64 for one

If had one complaint it would be the trigger return feels and even sounds ratchety, but the trigger pull is extremely smooth and consistent on mine.
