Dan Wesson Vigil
Does anyone have experience with the entry level DW Vigil 45 Commander?
The LGS has one that is about the same price as an S&W 1911 E SC Commander length. I might shoot 500 rounds a year at the local range.
A quality trigger is important to me; fancy stuff not so much.
Thanks,
Willyboy

Don't have experience with either, so feel free to ignore my opinion. I do have some experience with 1911s, though.
If I were in your position, choosing between a DW and a S&W 1911 at the same price, I would go with the DW, assuming it was in good condition and has a good trigger. They have an excellent reputation.
My understanding is that DW triggers typically run around 3.5lbs, give or take.

I love the Dan's, but the S&W E Series wins out on that choice.
The E Series is the most under valued 1911 on the market IMO.
I love mine.

They are comparable iterations of the M1911 design. Both have lightweight receivers, so in my opinion, barrel feed ramp style would be my deciding factor. The original Colt Commander developed a reputation for the feed ramp in the aluminum alloy frame to become gouged by some hollow point ammo and metal magazine followers. The solution is either a steel, stainless steel, or titanium insert in this area or the use of a barrel that has an integral feed ramp. Beyond that, they are pretty comparable, the other difference being the style of extractor. S&W went with a "modern", external, pivoting extractor, DW retained the internal extractor, both work well.

I have a Vigil 9mm lightweight Commander style gun. It quickly became one of my favorite shooters. Well worth the money. Mine was a Blemished gun, but you’d need a microscope to see any blemish. I carry it and shoot it. I use Wilson Combat magazines. No fails with this gun. Sorry, I don’t know anything about S&W 1911’s. I have a Wesson Pointman 9 Govt model 5 inch stainless gun. Possibly my most accurate 1911. Hope this helps.

Given a choice, probably the DW. However, if it is to be a range only gun, I would look for a steel frame model. I like the way a heavier pistol holds at the range, and steel frames are more durable in the long term, and have less recoil.

I have a Vigil Commander lt. wt.in 45 ACP, it is my carry gun. I’m also lucky enough to have a great 1911 Smith nearby, I had him check it out for reliability before I ever shot it. He said it’s one of the best built period, barrel lock up was the best he had seen. The only thing he needed to do was tweak the extractor so it would pass his requirement before it was okay to be carried by his old swat team. I have about 600 rounds through it without a hiccup.

I was gonna say BUY IT!
DW makes some of the finest 1911's I will put mine up against any other make at twice the price.
Great people to deal with if you should ever have to. One of the few good things coming out of New York.
The former president of CZ has a custom Firearms Shop here in Florida. Fusion Firearms. Prices are not for the faint of heart!
