Default So I walk in to Kittery Trading Post to geta S&W model 909...

And that same model 909 is still in there.
I know what you are thinking: but Steve why didnt you get it? You were going to put a custom model 915 slide on it!
Well, while I was looking at it, an employee puts a traded-in pistol in the case which caught my eye. T series Browning Hi Power in blue, a little beat up but god enough. Price? Way, way less than one would believe:

So here it is.

Default More pics.

Some factory grips came with it. It came with two magazines, one of dubious origin, and one original Browning. The factory grips were terrible so I am in the process of refinishing them.
It had a silver-soldered front sight as high as the Chrysler building which I removed most of it and re-profiled. I opened up and the rear sight dovetail and installed a Mark III fixed site. I removed the factory hammer and reshaped it has most hi ower hammers bite my hand.

Default Mag mods

I had an old S&W magazine from a 459 which had been hit or miss in my 3rd gens so I cut a new mag catch slot, swapped followers, and it holds 15 rounds and works great in the HiPower. Here it is:

SQUID 6, LOOKS GOOD!!

I use to look forward to visiting Kittery Trading Post every time we visited my Daughter who at the time was attending College in Durham, NH. It was only about a 20 minute ride and they had so much stuff in stock (including all the 22 ammo one could ever want). They have HUGE racks of rifles lined up on the floor that you are welcome to examine and while I was upstairs in the Gun Dept. the rest of my family enjoyed shopping on the main level in their "LL Bean-Like" store. Although I have not been there in 7 years (since my Daughter graduated) I hope all has remained the same at the KTP!

Great grab! LOVE that store! Yes it remains more or less the same it ever was... Snagged an awesome vintage rifle there recently in excellent condition. So much inventory there. And The Good Stuff. Gotta be ready to jump quick because it’s no secret and that stuff goes poof in a heartbeat; just like that browning did by your hand.

Their prices on new guns are terrible at best, along with everything else in the store. I live about one mile from there and go all the time. The draw for me is I like to try on footwear there and then buy it someplace else cheaper, AND their used gun prices are amazing, and their selection even better. I think last I counted there were 300 used handguns and at least that many used long guns there any given time. They also have some really cool stuff you just don't see anywhere else, like Turnbull 1911s on the shelf (10 of them!) and Randall knives in the case.

Yes, the Randall display is a rare treat. The fishing section is pretty great too. You want to buy an ice auger? Check out the make and model you’ve been thinking about next to the other 20 they have in stock. I don’t mind paying some higher prices to have everything I could ever want under one roof. Not a chain. Superior service in my experiences, and good return policies if needed. Sure beats buying off the web, or at Dickssss.....

Heard that. Saw a really nice highway patrolman there on the shelf. Caught me off guard. Not what I was “looking for” at the time. Got home and said to myself “myself, what the hell were you thinking?!” Ran back, gone....

Same story for a -4 or -5 629 Classic in 5”

I’m a man of limited means, so sometimes I kind of stall myself instead of striking while the iron is hot. Learned my lesson and have since used the “hold policy” to my advantage, so I have the proper time to talk myself into it. Lol.

I keep checking out the used KNIFE inventory, hoping maybe one of those Randall’s will slip through... hahaha. Nope.

Nice find Steve!
We always make our way to the coast then head north up into Maine as to pass thru Kittery. My wife is usually able to hit all of the requisite outlets in town in the time I spend at KTP. Then we'll spend an hour or so looking at stuff she likes there. It's a gun junkie's candy store for sure.

Meg-gear (I believe is the name) makes a 15 round mag for the HP, by the way.

Mec-Gar does make them, and I have another Hipower along with many magazines and holsters. The only reason I modded that S&W mag is because I had the parts laying around and that particular magazine had been pretty unreliable in my S&W pistols.

Mec-Gar. They make many companies' factory mags, too.

My son finds them excellent and he used them in sandy Iraq, where cheap magazines can get you killed. He never had a jam with either genuine Browning or Beretta magazines, or with Mec-Gar.

Other soldiers did have jams with cheap aftermarket M-9 mags.
If you can jam a 9mm Beretta, you must be using either really bad mags or not doing proper cleaning.

I think I have a loaded Mec-Gar mag for my M-92FS in a dresser.
I have faith in it.

There’s a reason every vacation we went to Maine and the first stop was kittery trading post.

For you mainers can’t get there from here. Great seafood.

When I was a international police officer in Kosovo, I was one of the range officers for a week long qualification for my fellow American police officers. We found out real quick that Berettas don't function well if dry. We, the range officers, all carried oil bottles and reminded every one that proper oiling was needed. We still had some officers that swore up and down that their pistols were ready to go. Guess whose Berettas jammed?

Thread drift here but I am a big fan of the Beretta 92 series. Have a couple and have had tens of thousands of trouble-free rounds through them. In my mind, they are just an open-slide variant of 3rd gen S&W pistols.
This particular 92FS is factory two-tone with some Squidsix custom touches: Vertec grip panels, G-conversion cut for strong side only, and drilled out the fron sight and installed a tritium vial in the hole (this was pretty hard and time consuming)

Well, I'm heading up to the Maine cabin for the July 4th week so will probably stop by KTP. I'm traveling with two other vehicles so it depends on whether they want to stop. Planning our departure so that we land at Gritty's for lunch in either Freeport or Auburn depending on which route north we take. The Auburn route is about 30 minutes faster but it means driving through Lewiston and Auburn. The Freeport route is all highway.

Ten days at my favorite spot on the planet, I can't wait.

Nice....... and also two of my favorites. Had a 92F Compact since about 1988 ...... before the 3rd Gens S&Ws came out. I only use Factory or Mec-Gar magazines....... I like their 18rd flush fit magazines for my 92FS and Wilson Combat Centurions..........

The "G"Centurion IMHO is what the M9 should have been in the first place..... add the scalloped frame and thin G-10 grips and they fit any hand and are a thing of beauty!!!!!!!

Finished the grips, added a stronger spring to the MKIII safety plunger, and now its done. Stippled the walnut with a soldering iron.

Just what those grips needed. You're a lot steadier with a soldering iron than I would be

We all fancy ourselves as gifted as Esmeralda, but then we touch iron to wood and it's clear we should stick to coloring in the corner with the other kids while artists do their thing.
I am pleased with the results for the price, but her work (Esmeralda's) will end up on here when I get around to it.

Very nice!! You did well at that price. No longer made( shame) and they are going up in value every day.

I still have mine. My first semi auto. 94.00 brand new in 1971. That was a lot of money back then. The shame of it was, and of course one never knows, , but the fully hand engraved renaissance model was 295.00. If you can imagine that!

I was in there about 2 weeks ago. I tried getting them to haggle on a 1905 Target Model .38. that was sticker priced @ $750. It had been aftermarket refinished. I ask for the "best" price. The clerk looks it over and says "you can have it for $750." Maybe he thought that was funny. I failed to see the humor.

My family and I have vacationed in Maine every year for about 20 years now and I've bought plenty of C&R guns there over the years. The last 3-4 years, KTP has been a dud. I think the staff that I used to enjoy dealing with is no longer there. Times change.......

Nice catch on the GP 35!!!!

Right here on the forum. One of our members was selling a set in the classifieds (among other items).
Eagle sells stag for HPs on their website (as far as I can tell, these are Eagle Sambar Stag grips). Spendy, but worth it. Unlike most stag grips for autos, Eagle's are slim and handy.

KTP has a great quantity of used guns for sure. some rare stuff too! The new gun prices are high as is the Maine sales tax.
I love window shopping there

We made the trek to Acadia a couple of years ago and stopped at Kittery along the way. It was one of those wow events. Never was there before. The used gun selection was just fabulous. I spied a pre-64 model 94 in just superb condition at a very reasonable cost. Had to leave it there. Great place. Great food. Great country.

It is hard for me to go a week without spending my gun fund in there. Little known fact: if somebody trades a gun in there and any ammo is with it, they put that ammo on the "no guarantee" shelf for pennies on the dollar. As an experienced reloader I can typically tell reloads from factory ammo so I check it out and buy whatever they have that I like in a given caliber. Example they had Brenneke 12 gauge KO slugs in the old 10-round boxes for .50 cents a round. Thats about a third of the price they go for around here. This was yesterday's haul.
As for S&Ws, I put a nice nickel 39-2 in there on hold this week at $450, but the more I mull it over the more I think I will let it go. I dont care for nickel. (I did come home with the mags that must have come in with it out of the mag bucket)

For years I use to go to Kittery Trading post to shop the Oasis of quality used revolvers and rifles. Is the rumor true that it is now cases of modern poly type guns, and very little old school guns?

It depends on the season. There is a bloody mountain of plastic guns there, but their selection of nice single and double action revolvers, new and used, is unmatched for at least. 100 miles in any direction. Also, in the spring there seem to be hundreds of hunting rifles in the used racks. I assume this is from folks who sat their stand when it was -10 degrees, saw nothing but snowmobiles, and promptly traded in their rifle.

Quantity..... yes. Quality..... Cabelas in Scarborough has a smaller selection that tends to be nicer though ( & more expensive!!)

L. L. Bean in Freeport has a decent array of new and used long guns. On my last visit , they had some beautiful shotguns and old Winchester lever actions.

Bean sure is mighty proud of their bunch of guns. Prices are beyond reason. If you see me holding my wallet and an old levergun in L.L. Bean, please arrange an intervention.
