Default Some range time with an old Rolling Block

I took my Spanish Rolling Block out to the range today, I got in a box of .43 Spanish from Buffalo Arms, these are a 370 grain LRN with a charge or blackpowder. The bore and rifling in this gun are excellent. I set up a target at 50 yards, and the first shot was almost dead on, then it went to the right and high right. One thing I can say, is the trigger on this gun is.....awful. I am willing to bet the pull is 13-14 pounds or more, typical for an old military gun.
I tried a bison target at the same distance and pulled one shot low and right, and the others actually grouped ok. The other thing is, the front sight is fairly tiny and on a 35-inch barrel, seems very far away. I plan on taking the brass, getting some different bullets to see if that helps. The other thing is that while fun to shoot, (especially with all the smoke) but the recoil is a little stiff, mostly because of the buttplate's design. I would love to take a deer with this gun though, just to say I did it.

Thanks for posting. I enjoy the antique rifles a lot more than anything made in recent decades.

As I age I find myself still shooting iron sights but on rifles with 20" or less barrels and still be able to see the sights. Bum legs so don't hunt anymore but do lie to punch holes in paper. Contemplating haveing a smith do an installation of a mint Persian carbine barrel on an old CZ24 action. Gonna be a mixmaster Persian barrel, chopped CZ24 stock, Argentine trigger assembly, German 98 trigger guard assembly, nice bolt from who know's where and mystery buttplate. Frank

Good start.........make sure you clean the brass in a mixture of vinegar and water. The gun and cartridge are capable of much better accuracy!

Very nice firearm! No question of whether to clean that one after every use. Enjoy!

Back in the 1970's I was a rolling blockaholic. I had both the 43 Spanish and the 43 Danish and 4 or 5 pieces of berdan primed brass for each. A day at the range required a propane torch, a bucket of water and an ice pick. I annealed the brass with the torch and water after each use to preserve their life. Actually, the process was fun, and I miss those days sometimes when I'm feeding brass to my Dillon progressive. NIce RB that you have. Enjoy it.

PS. I have to confess that we were using reduced loads of 2400 rather than black powder. Much easier to clean the rifle.

Something to try on the trigger; just turn the rifle with the trigger pointing up and put 5 to 10 drops of thin oil on the lowest part and allow to run down to the sear (give it a half hour). If you think the action may be full of dust and varnish, with action right side up and hammer open and again with block open, spray Break or Carburetor cleaner in all the openings. All the gunk will drain out the trigger. Then oil the trigger/sear.
