I stopped in the LGS this AM looking for a Ruger MK. He had a couple of nice ones then he casually mentioned the carbine. It came with a Western Field 25-7x20 scope. (is the scope any good?)

Needless to say it came home with me. I still want a MK pistol.

The Rugers are multiplying.

I just looked up the number. Mid 72.

The scope is a Montgomery Ward contract of unknown manufacture, Read that Japan. Maybe Tasco.? I'll see how it works but didn't buy it because it was scoped.

The rifle is super clean with only a few small dings in the wood. Not enough to worry about.

I've been wanting one of these sense I can remember.

Good score on the Ruger carbine.They can be costly around me. Yeah scope might not be a Burris or Leupold but might hold zero OK. Most I know who have owned them use the 240 grain stuff. Heard the action required a lot of machinings. One is on my bucket list too.

They are great little rifles. I've owned 2 of "em". Hope you never need a part these days. If you do you are SOL.

I have 3, they are great guns and the predecessor to the 10/22.
Not sure if they will digest .44 Special but the .44 Carbine was designed to use the .44 Magnum round and .44 special is generally more expensive and much less powerful so suspect it would cause cycling issues.

The 44 carbine is a neat rifle enjoy.

I traded into one a few years ago. Mine is an RS model, with the factory peep sight.

It's mucho fun to shoot. I now fire only full power jacketed thru mine, because of cycling problems with lower power loads. I also don't think the 44Spl will cycle reliably, but I've never tried.

I have one. Honestly, I think they are worth about half of what they generally bring. Mine will not cycle 44specials, but it does group fairly well for what it actually is. A friend who is a precision shooter was able to get 3” groups at 100 yards using 40 year old ammo that has been in the family for years. If I had something better than the an old Busnell scope it would do better I imagine.

Let me tell you though, these guns have some kick.

I bought one new back in 60s. Well made and trouble free, I've
owned several over the years. Do not shoot cast in these guns
it will plug up gas port. Mine all did well with 240jhp with stiff
load of H-2400. I shot 22.5gr, same as what I was using in my
Ruger SBH at the time and still am. At 60yds with K3x Weaver
I was getting 11/2"- 5 shot groups.

I took it as back up on several deer hunts but never shot a deer
with it. In fact I have never killed a deer with any 44 carbine but
have shot deer with same load in Ruger SBH and it fetched them.
I have no doubt Carbine will do the job. I shot a lot of groundhog
with them and never had a wounded one charge. Here in Ohio
they are bringing top dollar since 44 is legal for deer now. The
average price is about $600.

I had one that I sold to a friend for his son to have to hunt with. I never tried a .44 Special but I would not cycle reliably using .44 Special type loads in a 44 magnum case. It did shoot very well with factory Hornady 240 XTP loads.

The gun is built around the 240 gr semi jacketed (HP or SP) round. Anything else is not going to function reliably. I had one of the newer ones rgwe 99/44 model that looked like a short fat mini 14.. Great little guns but you cannot shoot anything buy jacketed bullets in them or you will clog the gas ports. That's why I sold mine. If I were going to get another 44 carbine I would go with a lever action and a peep sight.

I picked up a 1976 issue about 6 months ago. Screwed a 4x Leupold on it and, as long as I stick to full power jacketed bullet loads, it works great and is accurate enough. Much like the M1 carbine, though, I’m still trying to figure out what it is really good for.

In all honesty I think you could say that about ANY rifle that shoots .44 or .357. Aside from just being a hoot to shoot-Hell, it's cheaper to buy and shoot an old SKS.

A few years ago I became the third family member to have this rifle. I've taken two deer with it. Both one step, splat ! Full power 240 XTP'S. I load it to the same velocity that I get out of my inline muzzleloader with the same bullet. Approximately 1725'. I don't think the recoil is bad at all.

A buddy of mine hunted deer with one of those for years we never had to track a single one of them. I loaded his ammo with 240 gr HPs that were pretty hot, the gun functioned just fine with them. As already has been said you can't use lead bullets. It's a fine little deer getter if shots are keep to a 100 yds or less.

I can't think of a better brush or thick woods gun for pig and deer. Very handy with plenty of knock down power for sure. Think they first came out in 1961.

If the scope is made in Japan it is probably good. The clearest scope I ever had was an off brand made in Japan. It is at least forty years old and still clear and bright.

One of our clubs range officers was looking for one of these for quite awhile for hunting the swamps here in Louisiana, never saw a guy so happy when he finally found one. the marlin 1894's in 44 magnum are kickers as well. Frank

Like my JM stamped Marlin. I'd like to find a Winchester too but they're going for Colt-like prices here in CA.

I had some hard times in the 80's while in Texas and gave my landlord my Ruger 44 carbine for the balance of my rent before I left for CA. Looking back I prefer the Marlin just because of magazine capacity. Still loved that Ruger anyway.

I had a co-worker native upstate NY'r who said he hunted deer with a 44 mag rifle, can't say for sure what kind of rifle.. Told me that 20 or so years ago, I want to say he said it was a Marlin.

Very nice. I'm a sucker for any 44 magnum. It's just such a flexible cartridge that I love to load and shoot it.

If I fell onto one of these, I suspect it would be a nice companion to my 44 Mag Rossi 92.

I was acquainted with a Texas Game Warden that purchased one the year they were introduced. He worked the brush country of southwest Texas in the 50's and 60's and would patrol down the country roads with that carbine in the crook of his arm with the barrel pointed out the window. He mentioned one time that he "had to stretch one out" once. No reason given and none asked!

Even though I do not shoot it very much these days, one of my favorite guns is a Winchester Model 94 Trapper (16" barrel) in .44 Mag. And it will also feed .44 Special OK. I formerly used it for CAS, shooting mainly .44 Special to get the greater magazine capacity (10). It does fine out to 50 yards. I have never fired it at a longer range.

I rigged one out for an annual invited hunt in a SE Texas swamp in the eighties. 3X Weaver in flip over mounts. I thought the accuracy decent. I had it zeroed about an inch high at 50 yards. Other than one little flat clearing, fifty would have been a long shot. Hunted it once, then one too many funerals and the hunt went away. I sold or traded the carbine for something else. Kind of wish I had not done that.
