Default The new colt cobras feel so cheap

Finally got one in my hand today and was surprised at how poor the quality control was. Compared to smith and wesson revolvers, the action felt cheap, like it was about to break at any moment. And it wasn't just the one revolver, I held all 3 and they where all that way. For those who own one, what are you opinions of them.

Looking forward to what people say on this. With its financial difficulties, it is unlikely Colt can pour a lot of resources into making the Cobra - and keep the price down.

I'm also curious if the components of the new Colt Cobra are actually made in the USA. Colt brought back the Colt 1903 pistol last year but production is licensed to US Armament Company in Ephrata, PA. I've wonder about that, too -- if the frame and parts are actually made in the USA or overseas.

According to Colt, the guns are made in Hartford and the MSRP is $699. And there is no goofy lock in sight... A 6 shot 2” stainless with an upgraded fiber front sight should sell well. They are hard to come by in my area and every one I have examined was flawless and had a good trigger.

I compared my Colt to my S&W 60-15. They were very comparable.

Of course, I didn't compare it with my 686. It's a larger revolver with a higher price tag. And I certainly didn't compare it to my $1,250 PC 327 TRR8. Nor would I compare my S&W 642 to a Colt Python.

I'm curious as to which S&W models you actually compared to the Colt.

I kept thinking that I wanted a new cobra, but the $700 OTD price tag was holding me back. I found a used, but likely never shot one for about $600 OTD with a new Desantis pancake holster worth about $65. I have to say,it is an amazing shooter. I have one revolver out of about dozen that may shoot better. The new Cobra outshoots my 1966 Dick Special and has a better trigger to boot. I am very happy with it after putting about 300 rounds through it. I haven’t found anything it doesn’t like to shoot. Some say jacketed bullets shoot better than lead, but mine shoots Remington LSWCHP just fine. So far the 130 gr Rangers have grouped the best at 2” at 7 yards. I am really thing about taking the Mother’s and a rag to it it.

Interested in getting one of these in my hands. Unfortunately Colt is a shell of what it used to be in many ways and while the Cobra may be a step in the right direction, I’m afraid it isn’t going to be the life-line they’d hoped.

The only Colt I've ever had was a 6" Royal Blue Python...gorgeous gun no doubt but I like my 586's better. Not saying one is better than the other but I prefer S&W. I'm not digging the new Cobra although I'm sure it's just fine...I don't like the shape of the grip. Might like it if I handled it. I'm happy for the Colt fans but I'm good.

I am a Smith fan no doubt and never rode the colt wave back in the day because I could get in on the Smiths much cheaper when disposable income was limited.....fast foward to now when I can dispose of my income pretty much as I please I have added a few ponies......I like the new cobra and the fit and quality is great.....the dull stainless finish leaves much to be desired but I fixed that on one of the three that I have.

I love my 586 round butt for functionality and good looks but the python is all show and functionality....just depends on the mood I am in

My python is/has always been a safe queen. The trigger stacks too much for to enjoy it. Wont sell it as it was inherited.
If the cobra is similar obviously a pass for me

IMHO, and for 1/2 the price, I'd buy a new Charter Arms, either Undercover or Bulldog. Just sayin'

The build is solid enough...it's just unattractive. Also, stock rubber grip is too large.

I have a Charter Arms Pitbull in 40. I see why people say they are similar. They are about the same size, but the similarities stop there. The Cobra may have the best trigger I have ever felt in a revolver where the Charter Arms may have the worst. Yes, the Cobra has the best! The Charter Arms honest to god feels like a cap pistol. I feel like I could break the crane with my hand. It feels cheap because it is cheap, but it does go bang 99% of the time.

I looked at the Colt. It seemed ok but I just like J Frames.

It is really sad to see what has happened to the old line gun makers in this country. Hunting is not the past time it once was. Then there are the military and police contracts. One wonders why S&W and Colt didn't get ahead of the polymer craze. I noticed that the Marines are buying H&K rifles. Why didn't Remington or Colt get out in front of that one?

All caught up on CC revolvers, don't need another. No slam on the piece, but the only way I'd get a new Cobra is if the offer was so good I couldn't refuse, (apologies to Don Corleone).

I handled one and had no complaints with respect to the build fit and finish.
The $700.+- price tag was where I got off the bus. I just didn't see it as being a $700. gun, that's all. I will temper that statement with the fact that I much prefer Colt's work on semi-autos than I do on revolvers.

My ‘68 Cobra has a fit, finish & trigger that is second to none. It was purchased new in ‘68 for $85 and out shoots all my J frames.

The ones I have shot have no stacking. Triggers were like a good S&W pull in D/A all the way thru. One was a Night Cobra

I have the black, Pitbull in 40. It feels cheap, kicks like a strong mule, but the finish is very durable. It just made sense for me to have a small, inexpensive revolver in 40. I get all the free 40 ammo I want.

I've been considering getting one. The finish and that computer code squiggle aren't too appealing, but they seem functional. When they unveiled the Night Cobra (who picks these names) I decided to wait to get one of those. Still waiting, haven't seen a single one in person.

My Charter Bulldog (made in 2014) felt that way, too.

I know some dog the new Smiths, but ever one I've PERSONALLY held has been solid in feel and action. I prefer the no lock J-frames for new made guns, and still think they're the best defensive snubs on the market.

I've only seen the Colts in the shops. They looked okay to me, the one or two I've seen in the past year, but I've never asked to hold or test them. Frankly I'd rather have a Smith.

Some months back I went to my favorite lgs to buy the new cobra. Told they haven't been able to get one yet. He handed me a Kimber K6-S. I walked out with it and now I carry it everywhere.

I like Herrett Shooting Ace Grips. I have them for S&W J frames, Charter Arms, and Colt D frames.

Those Pachmayr Compac grips look good on your Cobra alo...I like those as well.

My wife and I handled one at a store back last December. We dry fired and fondled it and both agreed it had a very nice trigger. We felt it was priced fairly. Size wise I would compare it to a Ruger SP101 but the Colt felt heavier.

Three of them at the gun show over the weekend. At 699, no thanks.

And they do look Charter Armish.

I shot the new Colt at the 17 and 18 SHOT Show media day. It’s definitly not your father’s Cobra. I didn’t like the feel of trigger, finish or barrel profile; however it went bang when I pulled the trigger.

Had a new Cobra for $650 ,shot it did not like it. Traded it for 1982 SW M49,much better made and smaller. Shot rings around clunky Cobra.

My Python stacked as well...add the long reach to the trigger and it's now down to just looking good for me. JMHO as I know many love the Colts.

Open Letter to the Board of Directors at Colt Firearms

by Sheriff Jim Wilson

Congratulations! The firearms, ammunition, and related industries, have been experiencing unbelievable sales for the past several years. And Colt Firearms is on the brink of bankruptcy. You should be ashamed that you are responsible for letting this American icon go down the toilet. Your recent history seems to be a magnificent example of mismanagement.

Consider this: numerous companies build better AR’s than you do. Numerous companies build better 1911‘s than you do. And, not to sound like a broken record, but numerous companies build better single actions than you do. You claim that Colt is a leader and icon in our industry, yet, for the most part, you build inferior products and can’t even get those out to the retail outlets in any quantity.

When something is this broken, one need only look to the top for an explanation. I don’t know your CEO so this is not intended to be a personal attack. But, put very simply, your CEO needs to take a hike… retire… go fishing… but never darken the door of Colt again.

Instead, Colt badly needs a CEO who has a fire in his belly. One who knows how to lead people. One who knows how—and wants to—build quality guns. One who is committed to promoting the brand. In short, you need to find yourselves another Mike Fifer.

Since I am sure that most of you don’t have a clue who Mike Fifer is, your homework for tonight is to find out who Mike Fifer is and what he has done for the company that he represents.

There is still time… get serious!

Sincerely,
Jim Wilson,
A life-long Colt fan

I must strongly disagree and find the quality of the new Colt Cobra to be superior to almost all S&W revolvers. The parts are more precise and there are no apparent tool marks

A year ago I was thinking about getting a new Colt Cobra, but before going to the LGS i took my 3rd Gen. Colt Detective Special out of the safe to look at and operate. After doing so, when I arrived at the LGS the new Cobra was a non starter for me.

While probably not a bad offering in today's world, they don't hold a candle to what Colt made in their hay-day!!

I'll start with this...I have not had a chance to handle a Cobra as of yet...I will as soon as I come across one.

...but...

Looking at the competition in that range, the Colt leaves me with a "why bother" feeling. Look at the field (using pricing from Buds):

Ruger SP101 26oz .357 magnum, $565
Colt Cobra 25oz .38 +P $675
Kimber K6 23oz .357 magnum $833
S&W model 60 21.4oz .357 Magnum $618

Now, I'm no huge fan of Kimber...but that K6 is a superb (be it ugly) revolver. I have handled one and the fit/finish/trigger on one is superb. I owned a Sp101 for years and it was a great small revolver. I have not handled a Model 60...but it is a S&W so I'm guessing I'd know what to expect with a factory gun.

The 800lb gorilla in the room here is the fact that the Colt is .38spcl only vs the other three.

If I were in the market for another 25oz range, I wouldn't even spend the time looking at the Colt, it's more costly than the Ruger and the S&W and can't handle magnum ammunition.

Just my $.02...

I traded into the new Cobra a couple of months ago and have put about 150 rounds through it. Fit and function have been great. The grip is large but is very comfortable and pretty much eliminates felt recoil for me. Nice front sight that is easy to pick up. I have a tendency to shoot it a little low and left but I think that is me and not the firearm. All in all a nice revolver if you want six shots in a relatively small package.

There are some things I don’t like:

1. The cylinder release is pull instead of push.
2. The cylinder rotates in the opposite direction of a Smith or Ruger.
3. The matte silver finish.
4. The trigger pull is very nice but the trigger return is slow/sluggish.

Items 1 and 2 are not a big deal but are different than any other revolver I own. Item 3 bothers me a little bit but still isn’t a showstopper.

Item 4 is the biggest deal for me. The trigger pull is great but man oh man the trigger return is noticeably slower than my Rugers and Smiths, even the ones with aftermarket return springs. I guess in order to get the nice trigger pull Colt used a lighter return spring...there isn’t a free lunch. The Colt is the only DA revolver I have ever short stroked. In a tense, rapid fire situation I can see this being a problem for me.

So, I’m still on the fence as to whether or not I will keep the Cobra. There is a lot to like but the trigger return and the fact I am still struggling to shoot it straight may lead me to trade it toward something else.

Wasn't the budget RIA revolver a knock-off Colt design?
So - maybe this is a knock-off of the RIA revolver.

I agree with Sheriff Wilson's letter. I've never seen the new Cobra, but with the thousands of people in America with CWP's, plus law enforcement officer's who carry concealed weapons, I'd think they would have made a lighter weight gun that would be much easier to carry and conceal. I have some older Colt guns, but in my opinion, nothing is easier to conceal than a S&W 642.

Exactly...if you want to carry a small .38 revolver, why not go small? The 642 weighs in at 14.4oz, 10oz less than the Cobra.

*EDIT*

There's the weight difference...AND the price tag of $400.

Guess I'll stick with my 1960's old model Cobra. Got it from a retired Detective in the late 70's for $50. Carried but not shot very much.

I picked up a 2017 Colt Cobra earlier this year and honestly I like like it a lot. I'm more of a semi-auto guy, but I also have a 2015 S&W 686 and my grandpa's old S&W 14-1 that he had modified to be single action only. The Cobra has a better trigger than the 686, but not quite as nice as the 14-1. I like the fiber optic front sight a lot, although the gutter rear sight isn't my favorite. I'm not in love with the cylinder release because its oriented opposite to the S&Ws, and it requires a very precise pull. If you put a small amount of upward or downward pressure on it, it doesn't open the cylinder. You have to push parallel to the barrel. I don't know if that's a weird quirk of my particular gun or if they are all that way, but it is weird.

All that said, I still really like it. No dopey lock, 6 rounds instead of 5, a great trigger, and a nice front sight make it a winner in my book.

I still have my 1968 Colt Cobra, purchased new for $85, as my off duty gun. Not sure what it’s worth today but it will never be sold.
