The gun S&W should have made!
I've been looking for one of these, but not too intently, for a few months. Rossi 462, .357 with a 6-round cylinder and 2" barrel. One of the local shops got one in on consignment last week. I let it sit for a few days before I decided to go by and see it. It's in excellent condition, looks almost new. Got it for less than the "sticker" price, so I'm happy.
This IS one of the guns Smith should have made, and actually almost did. S&W came up with the Model 73 in 1973. Built on a slightly larger than J-frame (called the C frame,) it had a 6-round cylinder and was meant to compete with the Detective Special. There were problems with the fitting of the cylinder stop, which had to be off-set. They scrapped the entire project after making 5000 of them, and nearly all were destroyed. A few made it into private hands, of course, and you can imagine what they're worth now!

If S&W did produce the "C" frame. I would own one! Thanks for showing your Rossi.

I agree with you -- the 462 is one fine revolver. I got a decent deal on one about a month ago, and have to say that yes, they should have made this size revolver -- but Rossi/Braztec/Taurus did a fine job on these and I would rate the quality as good as anything S&W has turned out in the past 30 or so years.

Rossi revolvers are quality guns and reasonably priced. The only one I've owned (I've examined others) was an M60 clone that was very near the quality of the 60. I sold it after I bought a Smith J-frame, but probably should have kept it as a backup.
Twenty years ago I bought it new for just under $190.00. It was inexpensive, but not cheaply made.
I'd love to have the 462, though I could only shoot .38 Special +P from it.

Smith is just not interested in revolver innovation. They will keep making the classics as long as there's a market, but they seem resistant to even making 3" versions of the classics, which would all immediately become best sellers.
I have to disagree about the Rossi, because IMO the gun Smith really needs to make is the Taurus 617. It's a L frame cylinder in a K frame with a J frame grip. The result is a 28oz pocketable 7 shot 357.
Here's mine compared to the Taurus version of a 637:

Taurus/Rossi make surprisingly good little revolvers for the price, my bro & I bought our mother Taurus 605 for her birthday last year, which I personally inspected prior to purchasing it, and it was just really well made for the price.
Same goes for the Taurus Judge Magnum I bought last year. Initially I expected a somewhat rough Revolver considering the price/brand, but the only roughness to it was that the crane was a bit sharp around the edges, the ejector star had tool marks on it, and when I removed the grips I discovered that the frame hadn't been bead-blasted as evenly as the rest of the gun. Other than that, it was a fantastic firearm which currently sits at my bedside for Home Defense.

When the currency of a country is strong, its citizens can import stuff from a country with weak currency at very interesting prices. In such case it doesn't mean that the stuff is cheaply made;just that your currency(which means the general efficiency of your country is good)works for you.
Looking for imports with this in the back of your mind can be very productive for your wallet.
