Default If Remington would just......

I love my 870p.
I know it’s not a very fancy, or expensive gun, probably the cheapest gun in my collection. And I forget about it most of the time. But every once in awhile, I’ll shoot a few slugs through it and then give it a good cleaning and oil it up like you have to do with these Remington’s, and I’ll get to thinking.....

How cool, and how much fun, would a scaled down version of the 870 be , chambered in .357 or .44 magnum? huh?
Freaking 16-18” barrel, holding 8-10 rounds, pump action, top off as you go, handy little rifle that would be.

Are you listening Remington’s???

Ummm

Okay, Remington as you know it is dead, gone, buried. Cherish your memories, the future is bleak.

The closest thing to what you're talking about was made in the late 1980's or early 1990's by IMI, they called it the TimberWolf. Well

Yes it would. I don't know if there would be a big enough market for one. The IMI Timberwolf didn't fare so well. While we love our pump action shotguns, the american buyer has been indifferent to the pump rifle. The trim, easy handling marlin 1894, Rossi 92 clone and Henry probably have the corner on the .357/.44 carbine market.

I like pump actions for both shotguns and rifles and the idea of a pump PCC sounds fun. Doubt I'd buy one though unless it was in .500 S&W.

All it would take is to have Hickock45 endorse it and boom, it would sell like hot cakes.
I’m sure that back in the 80’s, nobody even heard or knew the Timberwolf existed. Plus, those were different times. I think there would be more of a market today.
Let me ask, if Walmart had a .357 or .44 870 in the case for $299.00 , would you buy it?

The Remy 870 is the best and most accessorized shotgun in history.
It's fundamentally the most popular, strongest, most reliable shotgun
that has ever been marketed.

I'd still hate to live on the difference between and 870 and an auto in equal capacity!

Popular yes. Most reliable. Not by a long shot. I'd put the Win. mdl 12 and Ithaca mdl. 37 in those slots. My 100 year old mdl 12 is still going strong. Try 100 years on a stamped & plastic 870. I have an 870 and it it a good gun for what it is. As for the strongest I'd rate the cheap win 1200/1300. that has a a 4 lug rotary bolt that cams into 4 lugs in the barrel extension.

I have both a Model 12 and its successor, the Model 1200. I'll take the 1200 - lighter weight, just as reliable.

I'd like one with a Mossberg's style loading port where you don't have to fight a lifter.

I'd get one in a 10-shot .357 IF it could also reliably shoot specials.

I too like my Model 12s. But I just got to say..about 55-60 yrs for the model 12 reliable oh yes. Made approx 2 million. 870?? 70 yrs or so..Maybe 8 million or more. I lost track. Reliable? sure 'nuff but I have to say the 870 is an easy gun to work on..getting parts is easy. and once you learn how to shoot 'em, almost as fast as a M-12. They will also take more abuse than a M-12....and the part that is in the 870s favor they are so easy and cheap to make. They are even being copied by the Chinese and S&W made a pump(M1000/3000) at one time that was about a dead ringer of the 870. It was a good gun also. How many guns has Remington made off the same basic design?

Men, Remington made pistol caliber carbines before, Model's 14/1/2 in 38/40 and 44/40 and Model 25's in 25/20 and 32/20. They are neat carbines and a lot of fun, but the modern day carbines are the current batch of "tactical" nines and there are quite a few.

Talking Speak Softly & Carry an 870 Police

For an up-close, playing field leveler, I've always found the 870 Police to be quite the negotiation tool, then, now, always.

If you are looking for a fast-acting manually-actuated tube-fed rifle firing handgun cartridges, it would be hard to beat a Model 92 clone - this one is a Browning, in .44 Magnum. No need to re-invent the wheel.

I agree with Paladin. I want my carbine to be a lever action. I have a Rossi 92 in .357 mag. I think the 870 is the best pump shotgun there is. Especially the wingmasters, and police guns.

For collecting give me the Model 12, but for shooting I much prefer the 870. The Model 12 has too many hand fitted parts. For me the 870 takes down easier, and switching barrels, parts, etc is much easier. Plus I wouldn't want to screw up the value on a nice Model 12 by adding screw in chokes. With the 870 I can buy one with factory installed screw in chokes.

Meh, if you want a pistol caliber long gun then there are already plenty of other options with a long history of reliability.

Get yourself a good Lever Action Rifle in .357 Magnum and don't look back. There's a reason why there aren't Pump Action pistol caliber carbines, and it's the fact that nobody has ever been able to get one to work reliably. Colt tried in 1884 with the Colt Lightning Carbine, which failed miserably, then Rossi tried to improve on the Colt Lightning over a century later with the Rossi Thunderbolt, which was also a failure.

There's a reason why the old Lever Action Rifles from over a century ago are still in production, and it's because they just plain work.

Yes, Remington has been “gone” for the better part of a decade unfortunately.

Not exactly a 870 but Uberti makes a replica of the Colt Lighting Carbine
that comes in pistol calibers.

My goodness, a blast from the past. I remember the Timberwolf as it came on the scene while revolvers were still the weapon of choice for most LEOs. As I recall, the plan by IMI was for police departments and prison guards to be issued a Timberwolf and reduce logistics by having two firearms served by the same caliber ammo. They never took off and I remember seeing them stacked up in gun stores and you couldn't give them away. They had a brief upsurge in popularity when the survivalists figured out they were designed as take-down rifles, and I also read that the stock could be easily removed and the piece could still be fired without it. You need big bucks today to afford one - I wish I had bought one back in the day.

Regards,

Dave

Ever since the first ammo crunch, I think there is a strong need for pistol cal rifles and carbines in general to replace the 22s that tend to be rendered defunct by empty shelves.
357 and 9mm seem to have been good candidates the last time

Yeah if Remington would just go back to the original line of Wingmasters, 1100s, and 700s instead of junk like that 710-770-783 ugly stuff. Get some QC back they would be in better shape. Too many bean counters!
