Default Anschutz #2 or Win52c

I am looking at a second 22lr Anschutz, a model 54. It is an older model with a custom thumb hole stock. It is, I believe, a single shot.

Don't know how long it will take to get the brand new 64 MPR model into my gunsmith's hands. So that inner accumulator is speaking to me in the 2nd person, "You would be in a state of pure Nirvana if you can get two top class rifles practically at once."

Most of us have an inner coach or an inner critic. One or the other. I believe I have an inner enabler who has me dialed in.

The seller of the used gun is an accumulator like myself. And he is willing to trade. This would be my first experience trading.

To muddy the waters up he also has Win 52c with a similar thumb hole stock.

Any comments on the stocks or Anschutz vs Win 52c?

I am leaning towards the Winchester, but that's just me. Winchester used to build some beauties back in the day.

To be honest I am also leaning that way. I'll wait to hear what other members say.

Now that Anschutz 54 is from about the mid or late 60s but has a "precision" something or other. I higher grade rifle. I'll write it down when I talk to the seller.

An interesting aside Anschutz in their instruction booklet dosen't recommend cleaning till you hit the 10,000 round mark!

The stocks appear to be Fajen stocks. The rifles both look like they may have been set up for rimfire silhouette work.

You cannot go wrong with buying both however........I own 2 Anschutz (1813 & 54MS, and a Winchester 52D that is set up for a prone gun. All three were once owned by Lones Wigger Sr.

If I were shooting a 1600/3200//6400 aggregate prone match I would use the Winchester as it is quite the equal in accuracy of my 1813 Anschutz but is not at all fussy when it comes to ammo. It shoots well with most and when you shoot the premium grade ( Eley Tenex, RWS R50/100, Midas Ultra etc, it REALLY perks up.

When it came to shooting a 3 or 4 position NRA/ISU match the 1813 was my ticket as I could make it fit me and not the other way around.

Hope this helps in some manner...........

Randy

Post both of these rifles in their respective forums on RimFire Central Anschutz Forum and the Winchester 52 Forum. You will find out more than you want to know.

Post it also on Rimfire Central's Trading Post. Will probably sell quickly. Lots of pictures will help.

I’d prefer the Winchester by a long shot, but that’s partially nostalgia speaking.

The thumbhole stock is a definite turnoff to me and would lower the value by $200 at least.

Are you close enough to the seller where you can actually handle both rifles? If so see which one talks to you when you put it to your shoulder. 22 target rifles aren't my thing but based on my experience with custom stocks you'll either love or hate those thumbhole stocks. Hope you pick the one that makes you break out in smiles.

jwk is correct about the thumbhole stocks. I have had a couple and they were fun to shoot. A 52E International is a pricey thing!

If both were in equal condition, I'd go with the Anschutz. I much prefer the 54's over the Winchester 52's for shooting.

I should have asked in my response ....what is it that you want to do with either of them?

As they sit I am sure that you could put a good scope on them and shoot silhouette/benchrest or have a fantastic plinker.

If you are doing any competitive 3&4 position shooting, they each would need a target stock and either good metallic sights or a good target scope.

The Winchester 52C is a magazine feed rifle and you can get 10 round magazines for them. The 54 Anschutz is a single shot with a better trigger unless the 52 has a Jewel, Canjar or Kenyon after market trigger.

The Micro Motion trigger on the Winchesters are adjustable, but not to the degree that the Anschutz is.

The bolt isn't from the 1960, nor 1970s. The photo is not very clear but it seems to be a 1600 or later bolt end.

Nice Winchester for sure! You will find that it will shoot almost all standard velocity pretty well and will really perk up with the premium stuff.

The best performing inexpensive standard velocity has been CCI 0032 Standard velocity.

Get a box of Eley Tenex to see what it will REALLY do on target.

I test my ammo at 100 meters as that is the longest distance I would ever shoot in a match. If it will put 10 rounds about the size of a dime I am thrilled. (What I must have, is ammo that will find the X ring and stay there if I do my part.) Anything closer (50 yards/50 meters) is just gravy for me.

I have never had a cartridge shoot well at 100 yards/meters and perform poorly at 50 yards/meters.

The other way around happens frequently however.

Keep us posted as to how your rifle shoots and with what ammo.

Randy

PS. Both my 1813 Anschutz and 52D Winchester thrive on my dwindling stock of Russian Olymp.....which you cannot obtain anymore. following that, Eley Tenex.........because it has won more Olympic and International medals than all others put together. The Lapua Midas Plus is right on the heels of my Tenex and I CAN get more of that!

When I shoot an outdoor 3/4 position match I will use the Tenex for the 50 yard/meter and then switch to my Russian Olymp for 100 yards/meters.

I like the Winchester personally. Even though they made plenty of them I find them difficult to find in great - unmodified shape.

I much prefer Winchesters. I have a 52D and a 52E that I regularly shoot. As with any rifle some will shoot better than others. I have had about 15 or so over the years, from Pre-A's to E's. The two that I have are the best that I have found. I have had two C's, one in a thumbhole stock and the other in a Marksman stock, both shot great.

Congrats on your rifle, enjoy it!

AJ, I have heard great things about all the Win 52s and the 52e seems to be especially accurate if you go by a few YouTube videos that I have seen. One single hole for a three shot group at 25 yards again and again.

I an leaning towards the good opinions posted above about a Winchester 52C. Am having second thoughts about the Anschutz but it is already ordered.

All are good rifles. I have had several Anschutz's 54 of various models and configurations. I am just partial to Winchesters of the 52 variety. I also like Remington 37's and 40X's.

Bottom line is all of these rifles will shoot one hole groups at 25 yards. 25 yards is not a test for these rifles. It is when you get to 50 yards and farther that their true colors show. With the right ammo my rifles will cut a group about the size of a Number #2 pencil eraser at 50 yards all day long.
