Default $5 Buck question: 3 spring Stockman?

Did Buck make or sell any Stockman knives with 3 back springs? While paying of my 66-6 that was in lay-a-way I noticed one for sale but I suspect it is a fake Buck. Some place I read to watch out for counterfeit Bucks. Its tang stamp is well done and includes "USA" and a date code but its side marker's pictures is a terrible distortion of Buck's usual knife being used to cut a bolt. This is not the most important question to be asked here but I expect Richard Simmons or another member will know from memory. If it actually is a Buck I'll buy it just because three spring Stockmans are not common. Previously I have only seen Case and Ranger brand three spring Stockmans.

If your knife is a fake, it is not on account of the three springs. My one Buck stockman, a 373 (China-made) has three, but I believe the USA-made 301 and 303 also use three springs.

My 301 has 2 springs. The 2 small blades are on opposite ends and use the same spring. Larry

Keep in mind that Buck's original pocket knives were by Camillus and by Schrade, to Buck's specs. These will differ from actual Buck production.

Call Buck and describe the knife very carefully, or post pics.

But any sloppy logo raises suspicion.

My 40+ year old, made in the USA, Buck 301 has 2 springs.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Apparently, they have come both ways. I just finished looking at a review comparing a 3-spring 301 with an older version using just two springs.

I don't recall seeing any fake Buck slip joints. What's the date code? Three back springs were from around 1990 to 98 or 99?

All I remember for sure about its date code is that it was a square cornered bracket. That makes it 1999 through 2001. I think the bracket was pointing down which would make it 2001. Knowing Buck made some 3 spring Stockmans around that time is enough for me to risk $5. Maybe They'll accept $4. If not I'm sure they'll throw in a #2 Phillips head I want for my trunk tool box.

My Buck Stockmans are a Schrade made 301 I bought new about 1968, a long pull approximately 3 3/8" one and a duplicate of the latter that I bought on sale at Wal-Mart for $7. They all have the usual 2 springs. One of these years I'll find a 4 1/4" 307 at a price that I'm willing to pay. They were made by Camillus. Ones marked Camillus or Remington sell for about 1/2 what ones stamped Buck go for on eBay. Since I have both Camillus and Remington marked ones getting a 307 is low priority.

Along with the 66-6 I bought a custom made sheath knife marked V. Cox Oldtree (one word) Montana. Rumor has it that a lot of Montanans pass the long cold winter hours making knives without ever becoming known. In the unlikely event any of you know anything about V. Cox or his knives I'd like to read it.

Thank-you for the help.
