Default Which is harder?

Because of lack of arm strength I can not rack the slide on a Shield 9mm. I know the proper procedure so please don't bring that into answers to my question. I bought a RIA type 1911 9mm and have no problem with racking it. MY Great Grandson got my Shield.
Does anyone have any experience with racking the slide on a Taurus 9mm
PT111G2c in comparison to the 9mm Shield? If so I would really appreciate any input.

I cannot speak for the Taurus, but I would suggest that you find a store with a Sig 250 or 320 in 9mm and try those. Yes, I know Sigs have a higher bore axis, but they generally fit a heavier slide than most manufacturers so they can operate with a softer spring.

My Taurus P111 G2 is slightly easier to rack the slide over my Shield 9mm. The Shield is not bad, but the wife had trouble with it. I bought her a G2 and she's fine operating the slide on it. I carry both from time to time, as they share the same holster.

Small guns with shorter slides need heavier springs.

True, but a chunkier short slide needs less spring than a svelte slide. My wife has a Sig P250SC in 380, and with its chunky slide it is much softer sprung than the Ruger LC380 I handled last week. That said, the LC380 is WAY easier to rack than an LC9. That darned physics again.

Wife had a Taurus and had no problem. She does, however, prefer the Glock 43.

Beretta 92s are generally easy to rack. Perhaps the Taurus version is similar.

But even the Sig P938’s slide is easier to rack than the Shield. Not saying the OP should get a P938, just that the smaller gun heavier spring therefore harder to rack is not the sole factor and always the case.

The Taurus G2C will have a slightly lighter rack than the Shield. I will suggest that you look at the G2C slide before you purchase it. From everyone I've seen(PT111G2 & G2C) the slides have pretty sharp edges and if you have difficulty racking a shield you might end up cutting yourself on the Taurus.

As someone else mentioned the Sig P938 will probably be the easiest racking sub compact/pocket 9mm you can find. The Walther CCP is also very light. And if I remember correctly the Walther PPS M2 is also pretty light. The Springfield XDE is also very light racking but is slightly larger than the Shield.

Why not the S&W M&P EZ? It is in 380 but with the bullet tech today it is pretty good. I bought one for my wife who has trouble racking all of the guns mentioned above but can rack the EZ with no problem!

My Israeli FN Browning High Power has springs like you wouldn't believe. Not a weakling by any strech but darn it takes two men to rack that slide. definitely going to look into seeing about some reduced recoil springs and hammer springs. Had the mag disconnect remover and some reduction was noted But this is rediculous. Anyone have any suggestions as to where I could get some reduced strength hammer and recoil springs. For my FN Browning High Power MKIII ??. Frank

You might want to consider the Shield .45. It's way easier to rack than the 9mm, and it's more accurate as well. You'll give up a round, but to me, the .45's overall superiority outweighs the extra round.

Default Question

How did they come up with rack the slide as the term for chambering a round in ones semi automatic????
I mean think about it. TO a newbie knowing nothing about a semi auto telling him "OK now rack it" or "rack the slide" sounds kind of mystifying. And why do they call it a slide-isn't the proper term a receiver cover? That's like telling someone with a revolver "Now put the bullets into the holes in the round thingie"
Not trying to stir the pot, but it's Saturday morning and I gots nothing better to do.........
