Marlin 45-70 Lever Action 26"
I purchased a new Lever Action Marlin 1895 CB 45/70 9-shot 26" Octagon barrel American Walnut Stock rifle thursday. Yes at 68 yrs.old I don't see like I did when I was younger,so I mounted a Crossfire II Riflescope 2-7 x 32.

I have a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 an love it. I also have the Browning 1886 in 45-70, their version holds 10 in the tube! I think you'll find your Marlin will shoot as good as your eyes will let you.
For a mild load, 300 grain Lead FN over 14 grains Trail Boss is soft on the shoulder and groups very well! Your gun will handle the over pressure modern lever action loads. They are accurate too and will kill anything on this continent, but the ARE VERY ROUGH ON THE SHOOTER! (Been there, done that, got the T-shirt and the bruises to show for it!) Any load 400 grain or more and 1200-1300 f.p.s., will shoot clear through a Buffalo at 100 yards (or further), you really won't need more. I found that soft lead at medium to slow speed are the most accurate.
I save the 500+ grain loads for target work at long range with the Shiloh Sharpe's. Again with the high recoil!

I bought one of long-barrel Marlin1895CBs last year. I kept my fingers crossed because of all the bad press the Remington Marlins had gotten after the Marlin plant closed. The one I got looks good and shoots good too.
I tried mounting a scope on it temporarily to work up some cast bullet handloads but with the drop in the stock and the height of the scope it was hard to sight and shoulder properly. Luckily it shot well with the loads I was using for my other 45-70 so the scope was on for only one trip to the range.

Might want to try a ghost ring apperature sight. I can't shoot a bullhorn very well but I can still run a ghost ring. Will let you put your hand around the action when you carry it too.

That’s a big gun!
Hunting horseback it’d be ok, but the 26” barrel makes it unhandy and over heavy (along with the extra ammo in the tubular magazine) for hunting on foot.

Good old "thumper" If you don't have shoulder problems yet, a day of shooting that 45-70 will have you enjoying a Advil cocktail. That said...45-70 is a blast to shoot. Enjoy yours

Take care that the scope doesn't cut you above your eye. That's why medium eye relief scopes mounted forward are usually preferred. Great looking gun.

I had a Ruger #3 45-70 many years ago. Nearly broke my shoulder shooting 500 grain bullets out of it...

Back around 1973 I bought a 22" Marlin .45-70. It was fine with factory ammo, but a bit of a bear with 400 grain Speers at 1600 fps.
Wish I still had it.
