...and yes...the brake does seem to be effective...

Muzzle brakes are horrible things. If you practice there is no need for one. Especially on a hunting rifle. The trick is to work your way up in caliber slowly and learn how to deal with it. If the most powerful rifle you have ever shot is a 270 and you go out and buy a 505 Gibbs, you will be in for a surprise. The ones with the most recoil, such as the Nitro Express cartridges up to 4 bore operate at low enough pressures that a muzzle brake is not going to work anyway.
