I have the 12 gauge with an Opsal converter. Love it to pieces. Best thing since sliced bread. Out looking for Bears with a bad attitude but tough to find in Florida. Guess Hogs will have to do.

I believe they make it in a .410 as well. I want one, but trying to decide on which caliber.

I got my son the 12 gauge version for his birthday. He loves it.

It is a sturdy gun - based on the 590, not the 500.

The recoil isn't bad, and once you get the hang of aiming like a big two-handed pistol at eye-level hits are easy to make.

I was going to get one for myself, but I may hold out for the new Remington 870 version with the wood grip and fore-end.

I just picked this one up from my dealer two days ago. It’s the Remington 870 TAC-14 in 12 gauge, based on the 1980’s U.S.Marshalls Remington WP870 (Witness Protection). The Hardwood model will hold 5+1 just like the Mossberg. If this week of rain would stop I’d get out and shoot it. I ordered a case of Fiocchi Low Recoil 12 ga. 00 Buck for it, but will practice mostly with bird shot.

U.S. Marshall’s in the 1980’s protecting prisoners.

Some good tips from Thunder Ranch Clint Smith on how to use them.

I did just that. I picked up my new Tac-14 Hardwood last week. It is very reminiscent of the US Marshal's WITSEC gun.

Sorry, no pics yet, but I did run 5 rounds of #8 through it when I got home. It is a handful of fun

That’s the key phrase for the Shockwave too.

I don’t own one, but I’ve had the chance to try out a friend’s. Lots of fun, but any really practical application escapes me. When it first came out, we had some lengthy threads here where folks came up with all kinds of rationalizations for it, but it does nothing that couldn’t be done better with either a good handgun or a full-size defensive shotgun.

Except it does look really mean. So if you’re into robbing convenience stores, I’m sure walking in and racking the action will ensure a smooth collection of loot

I've got the Shockwave in 12 and 20 and had both ManaPorted. Awesome guns.
I have a police model 870 I bought new in 1985 which I carried for 25 years. Great gun too but I would not buy anything made by Remington that is made today. The quality has gone down since being bought out by the Freedom Group.

I agree about today’s (since 2007?) Remington quality control being bad, but I believe it’s mostly when it comes to cosmetics, finish, stock finish, etc. being hit and miss. Along the same lines I wouldn’t buy a new revolver from the same company as my vintage ones, due to canted barrels, etc. But it would be hard for even those guys to mess up the tried and true 870 design.

I see that Mossberg makes a ported barrel for the 12 gauge Shockwave. $189

i bought a maverick and cut the barrel down, added the shockwave grip. i also use the rubber bumper and short shells. mine holds 12 of those cause it was a higher capacity tube. i can aim down the barrel now and hold it steady for firing...its a hoot to shoot!

I already had a Maverick 88 and bought an 18.5" barrel and the shockwave grip. It is a handful with 00 buck shot.

I would remove the pistol grip and the stock unless you have a tax stamp. Without the tax stamp that is an illegal configuration. You can't even have those items in the house with that weapon.

I think these things look pretty cool - especially the "Witness Protection" Remington - but they just don't seem very practical to me.

I was playing with a pistol griped shotgun 20 years ago, but found it was mostly a novelty. A cool novelty, but not that practical any use I could come up with.

The pistol brace is not illegal on the shockwave.

For Clarification that photograph is a stock photograph from SB Tactical. The maker of the brace. I do not own any guns, I just like to talk about them

I nearly bought a Mossberg Shockwave 12 Gauge a year ago, but ultimately ended up getting a Taurus Judge Magnum instead. Had the JIC model with the Stainless Cerakote finish been available at the time, then I most likely would have gotten it instead, but I don't regret my decision.

Got a 12 gauge Shockwave, it's a load of fun. Honestly, a lot easier to shoot than I expected it to be. I'm not a big guy,and I still have a good bit of beef over my son, but we both can shoot it well. It's not a long-range weapon by any means, but in reasonable defense range (pistol range) it's devastating. Not hard to figure out how to put it on target.

I like the look of the wood furniture, makes it much more tempting. Might have to give in and buy one.

That Remington sure looks nice in wood. That said, and I'm just going off handgun experience here:

I've removed wooden grips from some of my pistols. They LOOK nicer, but they're a little rougher on the hands with recoil.
And none of my pistols recoil like a 12 gauge Shockwave.

Also, just to clarify something said
Quote:
It’ll hold 4+1 just like the Mossberg
the Mossberg holds 5+1.
That's part of the reason I chose it instead of the Remington, which has a steel receiver and a safety by the trigger guard.

A note on the Mossberg's safety- I sure was nervous about that safety chewing up the webbing between my thumb and forefinger, but it hasn't come close to happening yet.

I've got three, one each of the 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and .410. The .410 has been riding beside me in the Jeep lately, and I really like it as a truck gun loaded with the Winchester PDX rounds. The Shockwave is much more shooter friendly than the .410 Mossberg 500 I have with the standard pistol grip. I'm a lefty, so the Mossberg configuration is more user friendly for me than the Remington is, due to the tang safety and the location of the slide release . . .

I like my 12 gauge Shockwave a lot. It's a great home defense weapon. I added a side saddle for quick access to 6 more rounds. Quick handling and the quality seems to be quite good. No issues so far.

I've had a 20ga TAC-14 since right after they came out, and just recently picked up a 12ga version (but only because they were $270 including shipping). I went the brace route on the 20ga, not sure yet what I'll do to the 12ga - other than replacing the Magpul forend with vintage Pachmayrs. I do see a case of Fiocchi Reduced Recoil 12ga buckshot in my future though.

It is my bedside gun and my truck gun. I have much love for it's compactness and ease of carry.

12 Gauge all the way

And none of my pistols recoil like a 12 gauge Shockwave.

Also, just to clarify something said

the Mossberg holds 5+1.
That's part of the reason I chose it instead of the Remington, which has a steel receiver and a safety by the trigger guard.

A note on the Mossberg's safety- I sure was nervous about that safety chewing up the webbing between my thumb and forefinger, but it hasn't come close to happening yet.
Your right, the standard TAC-14 holds 4+1, but the hardwood model holds 5+1, same as the Shockwave. I had a brain fart when I typed that.

Here’s my marlin M24 that I built some years ago. I don't shoot hot factory loads in it but at home defense distances hunting loads would be lethal.

Have a 12 ga Shockwave. It’s a hoot to shoot, as others have said, and with shooting gloves ( I know, a wuss!) it’s even more fun to shoot with low brass birdshot. Buckshot and slugs a different kettle of fish. I’m not brave enough yet to shoot a 3” birdshot but will sooner or later.

I know that this is not on topic but it is close ...

Back in the day the St. Louis detectives and warrant officers used to carry "whippet guns." If my memory still serves me they were cut down 20 gauge Ithaca M37's. Does anyone here know anything about these?

I've seen this debated to both ends, but I recently watched a video showing what various loads would do.

Some guy set up some sheetrock and plywood, made 3 'interior walls', and then set some targets.

In front of the first wall he set up a "perp"; wrapped up some sausage, beef ribs etc inside of some clothing. Behind the last wall he set a bunch of 2 liter softdrinks, in line of fire.

Bear in mind, I'm no hunter or expert on shotguns.

At 10 yds (I'd say that's about defense range), large birdshot (he said appropriate for turkeys) mangled the "perp" innards, and went through a couple walls.

Small birdshot (appropriate for squirrels etc) left a pretty bad mess, but only penetrated one wall and stopped at the second.

Buckshot went through all three walls, exterior plywood, and blew up the soda bottles outside in the line of fire.

Get the 12ga. If you’re going to be a bear, you might as well be a grizzly.

I wanted to get a shockwave when they first came out but now I'm on the fence. Some ranges where i shoot at have banned the use of the shockwave type guns.

They are a unique and iconic gun, and plenty fun to shoot. It offers more concealment and is less cumbersome than a full stocked shotgun but
having been a LE range officer for years I can testify that most people are better off with a full stock shotgun and very few people can shoot pistol grip shotguns as accurately.

Thought about getting the 20 gauge but just can't get too excited.....looking at the videos I've seen you still have to hold them away from your body.....so why not just have a stock? Concealed Carry just can't see it; I'm not a marshal...... truck/RZR gun........ think I've got that covered with my little 510.

I'm just not a shotgun guy...... and my little Mossburg Youth Model 510 (3+1), 20 gauge is small enough (18" barrel) and 11" LOP

Had one, sold it. It's a lot of fun if you look at it as a way to convert money to noise, but fairly useless beyond that until you put a stock on it.

edit: This is another stupid plus for the shockwave, but man is it fun to just have around the house. Something about a small shotgun just appeals to the inner child in me even if I can acknowledge it as useless.

I think I'll replace it once they start popping up used in the $200 market.

Thankfully the $180 -$240 shotgun market has better options for us currrently.

Some mentions here about truck guns. Most handguns would be bad enough but I can't even imagine firing a shotgun inside a vehicle. You would probably never hear properly again.

The two indoor ranges that I go to prohibit “hip fire”. I have other options for firing my shockwaves. But that is something to consider.

Works best if you put the noisy end out the window Mossberg Shock Wave I prefer hearing impairment to death. Seriously I don’t envision shooting from inside my vehicle as ideal. My “truck guns” are there incase I need them for whatever reason.

"Truck guns" to me are what use to be carried in the rack in the rear window (shotgun or lever gun).... to have a utility long gun with you if needed....... not to be used from in the vehicle

For the life of me I cannot grasp the reasoning behind the assertion that Short-Barrel-er... "firearms" such as the Mossberg Shockwave or Remington TAC-14 are "useless" just because they lack a stock.
Seriously, "useless" for what, exactly? I mean, yeah, obviously is would be arguably less useful in certain roles such as Hunting, but that's sort of a moot point when neither the Shockwave nor TAC-14 were ever marketed as such, so I can only conclude that the folks who consider them "useless" mean that they're useless within their own intended role as a Home Defense firearm, which is obviously/demonstrably false given the history of similar *ahem* "firearms" and their usage by SWAT Teams.

If you want to say that the Shockwave or TAC-14 is less useful for Home Defense than a more standard Pump Shotgun with an 18" Barrel, greater magazine capacity, and a stock, then go right ahead, because assuming that you have enough space in your home to maneuver around with a full size Shotgun, you definitely have a tangible argument there, but to call it "useless" is just a gross exaggeration. An inflatable baseball bat is useless for Home Defense, a Short-Barrel-Er...Firearm is most certainly not.

And to think that I used to find it asinine that folks considered .410 Bore/.45cal Revolvers "useless" for Home Defense.
