Default Mk I, Mk II or Mk III?

Help me decide or talk me down. There are three to chose from at the LGS.

Mk I with 4" tapered barrel. Clean but has some discoloration around the front sight and barrel. $275

Mk II with 6" tapered barrel. Super clean. $300

Mk III with 6" tapered barrel. Super clean. $325

All have the black grips but the Mk III has the red phoenix.

I didn't ask about boxes.

Presumably you are talking about a Ruger .22 pistol.

Not even a debate for me. The MK II is the best by far.

IIRC

MK I the safety is the bolt hold open
MK III magazine safety and lawyer trigger.

MKII 1911 style bolt hold open and no mag safety. Maybe not BEST but a nice combination of features.

My observations

Mk I, bottom release on mag. No slide release.

Mk II, bottom release on mag. Slide release added.

Mk III, push button mag release added.

All have the same safety.

The Mark I is the more desirable due to the 4” barrel.

Very handy, portable and useful in the field.

6” barrels are fine as strictly range guns, but the 4” is so much nicer for field use that there’s no debate IMHO.

MKIII because of the mag. release location. As far as the mag. cut-ff and LCI deletes; very simple and inexpensive fixes.

If the first one listed is 4" (4 3/4" actually) it's a Standard with fixed sights.

The Mark II will be a Target, better choice..

The Mark III no deal.."Loaded round indicator" That's just wrong(after owning many older 22's) and a non starter for me..

PLEASE take my word for it. The Mark II is the best of your choices. The Mark I was incomplete in its features; the Mark III was so fouled up with lawyer-dictated doo-dads that it was almost impossible to disassemble and re-assemble without going deep into the manual. The public put up such a negative outcry about it that Ruger rushed to put out the Mark IV, with a whole new takedown system and no loaded chamber indicator. I prize my Mark IIs; I'd grab all I could buy right now.

Not to pick a fight with a revered member and with respect:

I never considered it but if one were suddenly deprived of one hand while being attacked by mob of chipmunks the magazine release location on a MKIII would definitely be a desirable feature.

Now I have to practice ambidextrous one-hand mag swaps with a MKII to feel safe in the yard.

I faced the same dilema as you. My answer is the MKII is the best from YOUR list. If your MKI was in perfect condition that would make it more tough. But the op description sounds as if the MKI either has been shot a lot or previous owner could have taken better care of it. The mag release on bottom is a pain but my MKII puts them in the center everytime. They all are a pain to diassemble but its not needed to be done very often. You can clean em just fine while completely assembled. Good luck in your decision

I vote for the Mark II, although I had some minor feeding issues with the bottom of the grip magazine release having a firm click and hold. No issues after fix.

Shooter MkIi. Collector MkI

Be advised the MkI uses a different mag that is harder to find.

I have a MkII target and short of a S&W 22 revolver is by far my favorite 22 pistol. I've owned multiple High Standards, a Browning, various 22 conversion units for 1911s, a German Sports 22 based upon a 1911 and even a M41 Smith. For fun shooting I love my MkII.

I like heel mag releases, so that change plus the LCI and other junk put the Mk II ahead of the Mk III.

Mk II > Mk I > Mk III. The new Mk IV is somewhere below the MK I.

I currently own three MKII's, a MKIII and a MKIV. I also tend to favor my MKII's although I don't have a problem with my MKIII. My MKIV is the only one I've had problems with.

Ruger developed the MKIV for sissies.

I'd go for the mk I with the 4" tapered barrel. It was the first pistol I ever fired. You can't go wrong with a classic. It's the first one to start them all.

I have a I, a II, a III and a IV. I love them all.

The mag releases on the III and IV make them easier to handle.

Forget about the improved cleaning of the IV. Sure it field strips better, but so what. My I was bought in 1972 and it hasn't been stripped yet and it still fires 100%.

Personally if I were interested in a Ruger MK, it would be the new version (IV) Takedown is a breeze!

I'd go with the MkI,,but I'm bias in that direction as it was my first pistol and in the short bbl version too.
I never found the heal mag release to be a bother either on it nor any other pistol I've owned with one.

A hold open wold have been a welcome addition I must admit, but I never graduated to a MkII.
A mag follower made to block the bolt open work fine at the time.
It reduced my mag capacity by one but it's not like I was going to be over-run by Bandit Bunnys.

If the MkII had the shorter bbl, I'd be tempted to go for it if not just for the hold open feature.

I would prefer fixed sights on the short bbl too.

So picky!

Sadly I only have three to choose from unless I shop somewhere else.

I'm just looking for shooter in good shape. All three are in good shape as far as that goes. The 6" barrel points better than the 4 3/4" to my eyes and there's no issue with the extra weight or length, I don't notice it.

I don't plan on using it for anything other than target practice and plinking. Note I said "I don't plan on".

This is enough to eliminate the 4 3/4" MK I.

Either 6" gun is good enough to start winter bullseye leagues. That is not true about any pistol with fixed sights.

I would probably buy the MK II but mostly because it's what I'm familiar with. I own a 5 1/2" bull barrel MK I and a MK II Competition. The latter was the first variation that was drilled and tapped for optics. To scope standard MK IIs most owners used a Weaver or B-Square no gunsmithing base the same as was done with MK Is. The better way was to pay a gunsmith to drill and tap them. Beyond doubt the MK III's factory scope mounting holes are an improvement. Also the MK III's faster magazine changes would give it a significant edge in most modern timed matches. So, maybe I'd choose the Mark III.

On the other hand, my .22 automatics sit idle while my K frame .22s devour brick after brick. I guess that's the reason that I never got around to trying a MK III or MK IV. The Ruger .22 pistol that I am going to buy is a GP 100. First an attractively priced 4" Model 629 got in the way then a 3" Model 66. One of these days I'll get that GP100.

I am probably not qualified to comment, since my only experience is with my Mark III with fixed sights. Maybe if I had a Mark II for a side-by-side comparison I would notice the Mark III’s deficits, but as it is, I shoot it far better than anything else I own.

It is a pain to strip, to be sure. I won’t even attempt it without the manual in front of me, but the difficulty comes at least partly from the rarity of the exercise.

Default Ruger Mk II Secret

Taking one apart is easy -- it just happens. The assembly process is "problematic". After cleaning, insert bolt assembly into receiver so back of bolt aligns flush with back of receiver.

The SECRET Point the muzzle at the ground, squeeze the trigger, and flip the hammer full forward to the 'Fired' position. Insert the 'latch pin thingy' through the bolt, keep the hammer forward and position hammer strut in small pocket on the latch. Gently close the latch.

If the hammer is in the fired position, assembly is easy. If the hammer is not in the fired position, assembly is impossible.

Buy the Mk II, I've owned three and made a big mistake selling the first one, but it helped pay for a M41.

Mk II, for sure. I have a Mk II Government Target Model, never a problem with it and very accurate.

I'd go for the Mk II also. I currently own a Mk II with the 4" fixed sights and have had experience with the Mk I as well. The hold open/slide release is a nice addition. Also not mentioned, on the Mk II Ruger milled out the section in the back on both sides by the ears of the bolt, which make it easier to grab the bolt to cock. It may be a small change, but I think it makes a difference.

Thanks for all of the replies. In some ways you all made it easy, in others difficult. I can see where these pistols might accumulate.

Here you go boys and girls,

I currently am fortunate enough to own a MK1,a pair of MKII's, a MK II, 22/45 and a pair of MK IV's. Reading between the numbers should tell you something.

The loaded chamber indicator and magazine disconnect are a no-go for me. Wouldn't consider a Mark III unless it were almost free.

My favorite is the Mark II just for the fact that it was the only Mark series to ever be released with the now hard to find 10" barrel.

I just got done cleaning it. I don't see what all the fuss is. First time ever and only took 30 minutes with zero cuss words. I did look at a video prior to doing it.

Once I got it opened up the crud was pretty thick so I went for the bolt too. Huh? what's this? The firing pin spring is backwards from what I saw in the video. Who's right?

So I opened some drawings and the guy in the video was correct. How's that for a little surprise? It appears there's no damage done and it's slicker than snot now.

My K-22 needs some love now.

BTW, The left grip is worn like it was siting in a drawer so I ordered two sets from Ruger. I wanted the red emblems. One set black for the MK II the other set white for a MK III. The difference is the small cutout for the III's mag release.

I looked for one of those for years and finally found one at a great price but the guy behind the counter at a gun shop made me wait like half an hour to get service then waited on someone who had just walked up. I just walked out without the pistol and I won't be going back. I did mention it to the management before I left. I've spent a ton of money on that shop but not another dime. I really wanted that thing too.

I've inserted my Mark II mags in my Mark I and shot all 10 and did it again at least 100 times with absolutely no problem.

Hands down- Mark II. The epitome of the series IMHO. No LCI, no mag disconnect. The heel mag release is appropriate for a target pistol- the frame mounted mag release adds no value in a non-combat firearm.

Just my opinion....

I have a couple of MI and an MIII. I have never taken the MIII apart. The loaded chamber indicator is stupid, but, I just ignore it. They all shoot well. Thats the main point. But, I enjoy my K22 much more, so mostly the Rugers just set around.

I can see the frustration, especially if the cljerk took the walk in customer before you. Did you not just say politely “excuse me it’s my turn” ?

But if I was you then, looking for something desirable and rare, after looking for it for years!, would have waited and bought that thing.

And if I were you now, I’d run back to that shop hoping it’s still there and buy it.

Owning / fondling / shooting it would take care of that frustration quickly IMO.

I’ve bought stuff from idiotic unpleasant rude people before. Don’t like it, but if they have the item I covet at the right price, so be it. It’s the finality (obtaining the item) that’s important, not the process.

Yea, the 10" are scarcer than hens teeth. That said, the 8" "Great Eight" MK II 22/45's aren't all that hard to come by.

Default GOV'T, BEST OF THE BREED!

I prefer the bull bbl & adjustable sights, for accuracy reasons. For a trail gun the standard 4" tapered barrel with fixed sights has a huge following too. Of the 3 you listed, the 6" MKll HANDS DOWN. It would be an easy flip when you find a bull bbl with target sights. The big question is bbl length. I've gone back & forth at least 2-3 times. If I EVER get another Gov't, it aint going anywhere! OTOH the 4" target mdl is no slouch. You can't bump a mag release button that doesn't exist. LIGHTNING FAST MAG CHANGES, it's a 10 shot freakin target 22.
