We all have opinions. Personally those 2 items are insignificant for me. My III is the most accurate of the bunch.

Opinions are what I asked for. You both gave yours and included the word "Me".

I have an old Mark I 6" 'Standard' with taper bbl and fixed sights. I have well over 200k rounds through it with very minimal repairs.
I prefer the bottom magazine release since I am left-handed. The only real difference functionally between it and the Mark II is an added shell in the magazine and the slide staying open after the gun has been emptied. Neither of these features were enough for me to upgrade way back when and they are still not important to me today. I clean it every 15K rounds or so by removing the grips and flushing it with carb cleaner. Works great. Next to my beloved 17-1 this gun will be the last to go when nip comes to tuck. My pick would always be the old mark I.

Ruger 22 - I have a question for you regarding your MKI pistol.
Since you have fired a great number of rounds through it I was wondering
if the fact that the slide does not stay back after the last
shot created any problems with dropping the firing pin on an empty chamber?
I am sure that you were aware that you had fired your last
round most of the time but surely, on occasion, pulled the trigger on
an empty chamber. The question is mostly in regard to my curiosity
about the possible negative effects of dry firing on an empty chamber.
Maybe not an issue for you but for some others something to consider.

I own an old 4 digit serial number Standard Auto Pistol and 2 later
production "MkIs" and a couple of MKIIs but have no interest in the
post MKII Ruger 22 auto pistols (except for my SR22).

Thanks - Doc Thornton

The Ruger Mk-I, II, and III's all have a pin in the bolt that stops the forward progress of the firing pin from hitting the barrel. It's fine to dry fire them.

But if I was you then, looking for something desirable and rare, after looking for it for years!, would have waited and bought that thing.

And if I were you now, I’d run back to that shop hoping it’s still there and buy it.
That was right after the IV's came out so it's not gonna still be there. Besides I have plenty of stuff to shoot. I didn't really "need" one. It's just that the 10" model a friend has (with a target trigger / competition trigger - whatever) is the most accurate .22 pistol I ever picked up. It's spooky accurate. That doesn't guarantee one I would buy would be of course. And to be honest the price was so low (about $200) I wondered what was wrong with it. It doesn't matter. I waited too long to be treated that way. I did say something to the "cljerk" but he acted like he could care less. That's when I left.

I figured if they were dropping in price that much because of the new model I might even get one cheaper later. But I have a lot of guns already. I don't need to worry over one that got away. Trust me I've had better guns at better prices get away.

Doc Thornton, you are right. In spite of continually trying to keep count of my shots with any firearm I have dropped the hammer on empty in the Mark I lots of times. Not sure if this was the cause of the few problems I had over the years. The gun did jam up at times which I was told was mostly by my using a bit too much lube, and faulty magazines. My gunsmith did replace a few parts once but if I had to pick one item it would be the magazines. Speaking of these magazines, after about 20K rounds they become razor sharp at the sides--that is when I replace them. I have been lucky to keep finding the old ones at gun shows. I was also very pleased to read Faulkner's post about dry firing. I fully agree with you about the Post Mark II Ruger pistols.

I have a mk III 5 1/2 bull barrel. I consider the loaded chamber indicator
an excellent feature.

I got a package from Ruger today.

I'm gonna take a piece of guitar binding and fill in the mag release cut out on the ivory ones.

It'll wear the black ones at the range because my hands tend to get dirty when shooting a bunch.
