Default Do you have a gun you regretted selling?

Do you have a gun you regretted selling later?
I look at my guns as tools so I don't really get attached to them. I like some of my guns more than others because they are more accurate, reliable, functional or pretty but not really attached to any of them. If I'm offered a fair price for any of my guns and I'm not using it at the time or in foreseeable future then I have no issues about selling it.
When my wife was pregnant with our son I was around the house all the time and in the evenings I would hangout in the garage working on little projects. One night I was cleaning out my parts bin when I realized I had a Norinco 1911 frame, almost new Colt barrel and an old Springfield slide...most of the parts needed to build a 1911A1 pistol. Next night I started getting and fitting all the parts together. For next 5 months I would sit in the garage to order parts and fit them to build a 1911 that I wanted. 10 days before my son was born I finished fitting all the parts and refinished the pistol with bake on moly finish.

Certainly not the quality of master builders of the time but very respectable pistol that was totally reliable and very accurate...and in my eyes a good looking pistol. I carried that pistol for almost a year and shot thousands of round through it at local IDPA, IPSC, bowling pin and 3 gun, bullseye, etc. matches.
One day at the range a fellow approached me and asked about the pistol. He shot couple mags with it and asked me if I would be willing to sell it. I told him for the right price I would sell it. After few minutes of negotiation we agreed on a price and then he left for few minutes to go to the bank and came back with the cash. He gave me cash and I gave him the pistol...no regrets.
It was couple weeks later that I started having regrets. I've tried to track down the guy but nobody knew who he was.
That was 13 years ago and I still have regrets about selling that pistol.

I've had about 130 handguns in my time, and I'm down to two now. I don't plan to add any more. I do regret trading/selling most of them, except for the Tauruses (Tauri?) and Kimbers...I had a lot of problems with them.

The guns I regret not keeping the most were the ones I bought when I got out of the Navy in 1973...some Colts and S&Ws that command a very high price today, compared to what I paid for them then. I sold them to help pay for college (I had the GI Bill, but it didn't pay for everything) and now I wish I had found some other way instead of selling them. Oh well...can't take them with me, and my sons don't care about guns.

My Marlin 60 I bought at 18. That would be a nice gun to still have since it was the first I bought with my own money. Other than that, every gun was sold or traded to get something better. Probably be better to post about guns regretting buying. I could make a list of those.

I've bought and sold a bunch of them, and I don't really "regret" selling any of them. I would like to have a couple back but I'd probably just sell them again.

I enjoy selling them almost as much as I do buying them.

I predict this is the start of a very long thread....

I can't think of any (the few) I've sold and regretted. Some may have been nice to have but that's when having similar ones or duplicates, or just finding another one, comes in handy.

My wife said she misses this "Glock kit" I put together for her years ago.

It's a Glock 22 frame that shoots 22lr, 9mm, 9mm cast bullets, 40S&W and 357 Sig. It consisted of complete 22lr upper, Glock 17 upper with factory barrel and after market barrel for shooting cast bullets and a Glock 22 upper with factory 40S&W barrel and factory 357 Sig barrel.

It worked really well but I sold it all together and then I built a same kit using Glock 23 frame but wife didn't like that one as much...so I sold that one too.

Not only did I later regret selling it, I regretted even thinking about selling it, then I regretted deciding to sell it, then I regretted listing it for sale, then I regretted that somebody wanted to buy it, then I regretted accepting the offer, then I regretted taking it to the LGS, then I regretted having it shipped to the new owner, then I regretted hearing about how much he liked it, then I regretted feeling bad about how much he liked it, then I regretted......well, you get the picture.

I also regret deleting all the pictures I had of it.

Regret selling my first pistol a 469 four years ago along with three 12 round mags . I joined S&W forum looking up info which sent me back to the LGS to buy my 5906.

For the most part, I still have most of my guns, and added quite a few lately. I am slowing passing some down now. I regret having sold a model 25 in a presentation box I waited 2 years to get, a 65-1 I bought new for 135.00, a 6" python ultimate in a presentation box I never fired, and my first revolver a 28-2. Beyond that I had a matched set of Krieghoff K80 consecutive serial numbered, factory cross fitted blue super scroll trap shotguns I should have never sold.No regrets on anything else that went down the road. I have 2 now that are on the bubble. A stainless Ruger Super Blackhawk, and an Interarms Walther PPK/s. I intend to have a double wide coffin

My first large caliber semi was an AMT long slide. It came with a Colt slide and barrel, with a Bomar rib and target sights on it as well. Great Bullseye and Pin combination. I didn't appreciate what I had and let it go. Been regretting it since the mid '70's.

I have one gun that I would NOT regret selling. But I am keeping it as a reminder of how stoopid I was to have purchased it in the first place. Do you have a gun you regretted selling?

No sir, never sold a single gun because of the countless threads like this one where so many admit regretting selling off some of the best guns they ever had. I can always go out and make some money someway or anyway but many guns will never be made again and some already made are booming so pricey that they can not be afforded.

I have sold & traded off hundreds. The ones that are big bucks
now are regrettable but the difference in the value of the dollar
has been drastic in 50 yrs. The ones that were cheap back then
like WW2 & WW1 suff, of which I had tons of are the ones I regret from money standpoint. For shooting purposes I miss a
few but I would never been able to have owned as many guns
if I hadn't been trading and selling.

I've bought, sold, and traded more than I can count. I don't regret a single one.

I look at some guns as very enjoyable Certificates of Deposit. If I can get a good price and I have the dough, I buy it and try it. If I need dough and can get a good price, then bye-bye.

Some I'm more likely to keep than others. I have my grandpa's Fox Sterlingworth, and some of my recently deceased Dad's guns. These would go last. But they are just things, and if my family needed something and the best way to get it was so sell them, then bye-bye.

They are all going to get sold by somebody at some time. Might as well be me, if it suits my needs.

But once its done, it is done. Why mope about it?

Way back when, I did lots of impulsive selling and trading. There were more than a couple I kicked myself for getting rid of. In the last 15 years or so, I've replaced just about all of them with a duplicate or something even nicer.

All except for my very first S&W, which was a 4th Model Safety Hammerless, .38 S&W, blued, 2" barrel, and in excellent condition. That one I'm still sorry about, and I'm not holding my breath waiting for one I can afford.

I used to have a Ruger P90. We all know they are nothing spectacular. So I sold it off a few years ago. If I remember right, got $375 for it.
Missed the boat anchor! Liked the way it shot.
So, when saw 1 up for sale at a reasonable price, Had to pursue it. ($350) Told seller, I changed my mind. He got back with me, and offered it for $300. The rest is history. About a 90 minute drive. VERY nice gun. Won't make that mistake again? Bob

Nope... I don't regret selling any of my firearms. They all were massed produced and easily replaceable. Plus, I always solded them to fund the purchase of something I wanted more...

Yes.

Czech VZ-58 (folding stock)
Bulgarian Makarov PM
Kit Build Bulgarian AK-74
1943 Lithgow SMLE w/Trench Art
Bushmaster M4

The only reason I miss the Bushmaster is because I built it to be as close to an exact clone of a military M4 as possible. Started out as a Patrolman's Carbine. By the time I got through with it the only two Bushmaster parts left on it were the upper and lower receiver. I put $250 14.7" M4 profile barrel on it from Brownell's (which are really nice BTW) and pinned/welded a A2 flash hider on it to bring the barrel out to the legal 16". Put a PSA FA BGC in it, heavy buffer, old-style Fiberlite stock, ALG buffer tube, Colt carry handle, and ALG ACT trigger.

I got it just the way I wanted it then sold it to my stupid brother so I could buy a very nice 1977 Remington 700 BDL "Varmint Special" in .308.......

I love the 700 - it's a MUCH NICER RIFLE than the M4 - but I just regret dumping so much time and effort into the gun only to get rid of it shortly after I had it like I wanted it. It looked like this:

Well...no. I don't have any of the guns I regret selling. But, all of those I have sold, I regret. And I can count them on one hand. Probably takes all five fingers. I can't bear the pain. No more get sold, just bequeathed to my daughter who insists she wants all of them. And she has volunteered to take care of me in old age should that be required. If she wants to have a big sale to fund my care, I guess that is her business.

Correction: I can think of one 1920's M&P 4th in flaked nickel that I got a very good price on and don't miss one bit.

Yes...... A 2" Round Butt M10. Years ago I sold it and bought a M60 in its place as my EDC CCW - because the M10 was a bit to heavy and bulky to justify the 1 extra cartridge it held. While I still would not carry it over the M60, I do regret selling such a fine Revolver!

I’ve bought, sold and/or traded scores of handguns, mostly without regret, but it seems like I do usually end up regretting selling single action Colts. For example, a nickel plated, 4 3/4”, pearl stocked, 44/40 made in 1903. Then there was a 2nd gen, blued 5 1/2” .45 and, finally, a 3rd gen, 7 1/2” 44 Special. There have been others too. Maybe the memory of them is better than they actually were but I wish I had them now.

A Rock Island 9mm, officer model. I upgraded a few parts and did some trigger work. That thing was stupid accurate. Would shoot the center out of the target at 15 yards.

Traded it for a Sig SP2022 that I never could shoot well.

I would love to have not been in the position I was when the bottom dropped out of the real estate market. These two went, and I wish I had them back.
Micro UZI and HK P7M8 with Robar finish.

As they say, hindsight is 20/20. Had I known Colt would stop making revolvers, I would never have sold my 6" nickle plated Python. Also, had I known certain S&W revolvers would increase in value, I would never have sold my 8 3/8" no dash model 629. There have been others, but these two cause me the most regret as they are both irreplaceable(out of my very limited budget).

So far, I have only traded or sold two. A S&W 39-2 and a Dan Wesson 15-2. Several years after letting go of these two, I ended up buying a S&W 439, then another DW 15-2. Guess that sort of makes it a wash.

I only sold three, out of 50 plus. I only regretted one, a CZ 75, which a colleague pried our of my hands (he pestered me until I gave in); and that was easy to replace, I just bought a very nice pre B.

The other two I was happy to see them off : a first gen Israeli made Desert Eagle .44 Magnum, bought brand new in 1989 for the pricely sum of $ 1150.- .

I originally loved it, the Schwarzy / Hollywood effect. But that thing never ran properly. I fed it all the commercial ammo I could find. Than I started reloading and tried dozen of combinations. It would jam at least once per Mag (thatís seven rounds!!), very consistently. Then the slide broke where the piston meets it. Another $ 350 for a new slide, and off you go. In fact I didnít even sell it, but traded it with my mechanic for 4 new wheels (rims and winter tyres) for my Audi Quattro. And gave him full disclosure. Guess he wanted a paperweight.

I also quickly sold my very first gun, a S&W 422. Never warmed up to it, didnít like the look, the balance.

In fact my early days with guns were not easy. I knew nothing about them, except I wanted a real one, since I turned 18 and was entitled to the real thing after a childhood filled with movies and toy guns.

So this rascal LGS sells me a Llama Omni (careful if you have sensitive eyes, butt ugly gun IMO).

For my first license, I had an interview with the police chief of the arms bureau. When he saw what I bought, he said donít buy that ***, get a .22 for beginners. The LGS agreed to change for the 422. I asked him if he would buy it back, even take as part payment in case I donít like it. He said ďsureĒ. 8 months later went to see him, and he goes ďahem, I still have half a dozen unsold onesĒ. That was the last time he saw me. Another very nice LGS accepted it as partial payment for a beautiful 66-3, which I still have.

I learned a lot about guns since then ...

Several years ago I sold my Colt Magnum Carry 357 for about 1/2 what it was worth. I have regretted that one until this day.

I've regretted selling certain motorcycles more than most guns I've sold...especially when I see what they are worth now!

Well now, interesting thread. Over the course of time going back to about age 13, I have bought/sold/traded enough guns to need a Cray supercomputer to keep track of it all!

Two most definitely fall in that "regret category"! (and of course a few also rans!)

Back in the 60s I had a very nice Model 92 Winchester carbine in 25.20. Saw something else I just had to have and a trade occured.

The one that I realy miss the most was a 1100 28 gauge skeet gun, ( I was shooting NSSA 4 gauges back then) That 28 with the weight cap was a very good gun for breaking clays. I never did have a 20 gauge I used the 28 instead and dide fine. On a good day I could even stay up or beat my 12 gauge 1100 SA skeet gun for score.

I then after a hard fight got my NYS pistol permit and gave up shooting registered skeet and concentrated on shooting and reloading handgun. A couple yeas later a friend asked if he could buy that gun and the MEC 600JR press as they were not being used. I had my eye on some handguns and foolishly let them go. I regretted it heavy duty a couple of months later I asked but he would not sell it back to me.

Just a couple months ago I started shooting skeet again after a 35+ year absence and not having that little 1100-28 just about gives me a attack of the Vapors.

Too many to list but, 2 do come to mind.
The first of which I sold because using it was hard on my left shoulder injury. It was a Henry pump action 22 with an octagon barrel and using the pump action made my shoulder very sore after only about 40-50 shots. I traded it for a semi-auto 22 rifle.

The 2nd was my Mosin Nagant 91/30. My thinking was, I'd sell it and get a semi-auto version (VEPR) but then the prices went through the roof and now, they are nearly a grand. Now I have all this surplus ammo and nothing to shoot it out of.
I will get one eventually but for now, it's just not within my budget.

I've sold many guns over the years, and I've missed many of them later. But there are a few that I do not miss at all! I've owned at least two that I immediately regretted selling. One of those I got back through the generosity of the friend I sold it to for the same money he paid me for it. That's a good friend! The other, I eventually found a replacement for the one I sold. Different gun, but the same. I'm happy! I really need to sell some at this time in my life, I guess, but I am loathe to do so. With two sons and seven grandchildren, I expect they will get to make the decision about what happens to what I now own. That's OK. What they do with them will be their business. But a good many of them won't go anywhere, I think. I've even got a few duplicates, so maybe that will allow more than one to have the same gun! One thing is certain, I don't own a single gun at this point that I have not thoroughly enjoyed having in my possession. Guess that's why I still have them!!
