Default Thinking about a new toy...What's next?

Current assortment includes....

M&P Shield 9mm (my baby)
M&P Compact .22
M&P 2.0 9mm 5" barrel
Sig Sauer p238
Ruger AR 556

What do I "need" next? My intent is fun mostly, versatility, and shootability as I'll be taking her to the range or field for fun. I'm not interested in collecting or high dollar.

How about something that's over 50 years old, and made from blued steel and walnut?

Don't have any of the ones you mentioned other than a Sig , but do have the Sig 238. A very nice CCW pistol. accurate and well built. Not what I would call a "range pistol" accurate to about 15 yards perhaps 25 if you are that good.

It looks like you lean more toward "new" toys. For me, new acquisitions tend to be interesting pieces from mid-19th Century to about WW2. Not much made over the past 20 years or so holds my interest very long. Blued steel and walnut showing real pride in craftsmanship stands out when I see it. Plastic anything doesn't even get my attention.

Either a revolver or DA/SA.

If you just want fun on the range, I'd suggest one of the low price police trade in Model 10s or 64s that are floating around right now. For a DA/SA, the Tristar C100 or S120 are epic guns for the money. After I put aftermarket springs in it, my C100's trigger is very close the trigger from my much more expensive SIG P229.

686 / 586 are like peanut butter and jelly of revolvers. Everybody needs one. .357 mag or 38spl.

Only choice you need to make is blue or stainless, and how long do you want the barrel.

If you don't already own a Smith & Wesson Military & Police (K-frame) revolver you have not experienced one of the most effective personal defense handguns ever made. A Model 10 .38 Special with 2", 3", or 4" barrel will do just about anything most of us ever need to get done. If you prefer stainless the same thing can be had as the Model 64. If you are seeking more power step up to the Model 13 or Model 65 in .357 magnum.

Any of these can be found for well under your $500 budget, and you will never regret owning them.

While I agree you need a revolver, it looks like you also need a 12 gauge, perhaps a Mossberg 590M.

I would suggest a Model 28-2. 4 or 6" in 357 mag.

BTW, I just got a well maintained beautiful Remington 512 Sportsmaster 22, made in 1942. Nothing like polished blue steel, and aged finely finished walnut with character.

I agree that you need a revolver. If your take your time, you can find a "cosmetically challenged" K-22 or a pretty nice K frame 38, like a model 10 if you don't want an adjustable rear sight, or model 15 if you do. Of course you might luck upon a .357 in that range and have the option to shoot .357 or 38 specials. You really need to try a single action (Ruger Blackhawk) variant sometime too.

And as mentioned above, you need a shotgun. Even those are fun at the range! Good Luck, and be sure to show it off here. Whatever it is you decide on.

I'd agree. It's time for a revolver and the 686/586 is just what you need to fill that void in your life. Extremely versatile with ammo and lots of barrel lengths to choose from.

It doesn't get any better than a K frame .22 ( M18, M17 or M617) for affordable fun at the range or plinking. You probably will have to spend a bit more though, maybe $650 -$700. .22lr is back in stock and getting more affordable .

If you prefer something less expensive, used .38 Special guns can still be found for less than $500. I prefer a K frame, but there are some very reasonable priced J frames both new and used if you want a snubby for carry.

For fun without breaking the bank get a good .22 rifle, or maybe two if
you're looking to spend up to $500. Lots of them out there. Maybe a
classic steel and walnut Winchester, Marlin or Remington or a new Ruger
10-22 or Marlin 60 for not a lot of money. Every gunny needs a good .22
rifle or three.

You need 870 in 12 guage. , then a .357 medium frame 4" revolver.
Dont get caught up in old vs new. Not everyone has time or access to pawn shops and such.

I would suggest a nice used Browning Citori 12 gauge. I would recommend one of the older Sporting Clays models. This should run in the $1000-1400 range. The newer discontinued models are a big step up in price, and won't fill the casual use need any better. It will last a lifetime (or 3!) and is already at the bottom of the price cycle. You can shoot Skeet, Sporting Clays, small game, Waterfowl and even Zombies with it! Smaller gauges are available, and have their place, but usually the price goes up a big step as the gauge goes down in size.

This will help you break your nasty Black Plastic addiction!

$500 budget? Can get a good pump shotgun for that. Get a dual barrel package or one with interchangable chokes and you could do everything from skeet shooting to destroying stuff with slugs to actual hunting. Plus they are primo home defense weapons.

Target and game load shotshells are fairly inexpensive. In my area, cheaper than 38 special range ammo per round.

What do I "need" next? My intent is fun mostly, versatility, and shootability as I'll be taking her to the range or field for fun. I'm not interested in collecting or high dollar.
If I were to make a basic must have list it would be:

22 LR pistol(preferably target style) - M&P 22 compact CHECK
Pump shotgun(field/security combo - versatility)
Glock 19 or 17 - M&P 2.0 CLOSE ENOUGH
Medium/Large frame 357 Magnum revolver
Ruger 10/22
AR-15 - AR-556 CHECK
30/30 Lever Action
Carry size pistol - P238 & Shield CHECK

That being said for what you are asking for I would probably be looking for a 357 revolver first. You should be able to find a used S&W 686/586/19/13/66/65/28 or Ruger GP100/Service Six/Security Six or Colt Trooper in your price range.

Whatever you end up with keep shooting, keep expanding you collection and most importantly keep having fun.

Be aware that the Model 19 is not ideal for a lot of .357 magnum loads. Something to consider if you are revolver shopping.

Looks like you need to expand your calibers. How about a 40s&w and a 357 sig? You get both with a Sig P250. Comes with 2 barrels that are drop ins. Mags and slides stay the same. I believe the P320 is the same gun but striker fired.

The best value in the $300 - $400 range is Canik TP9SA or SF...SFL and SFX are a tad more, but you can find them under $500 and they are longer barrel sweet shooters. Do some internet research and you will find 90% positive.

Get a "roots" gun....either a classic revolver or 9mm and harken back to the "olden" day and find out where modern guns come from.

I'd suggest a Model 10 in .38 special or a 39- . (Or a 59 series if you like double stacks.)

For a bit more history without getting into collectibles you can find a Walther P1 in your price range (same as P38 without the premium of a WWII collectible).

Sigs are semi addictive (it's called the Sig-ness) and I'd start with a P6.

If you are going to stay with S&W, stay with a steel pistol; and go a bit more modern, look for a 6906...3rd generation reliability, carryable, classic.

So many choices...so little money.

Default My latest toy......

I wanted a .30 carbine but had to settle for a Norinco SKS before the prices went up any more.

I've got more than a few revolvers and pistols so a ways back I added a Mosin Nagant and the SKS. I'm a carbine NUT!!!

Thereís sooooo much you can do with a 12 gauge. I want to tell you to get a revolver, but you canít have 3 guns or more and NOT have one of them be a shotgun. The revolver can wait.

Talking IT'A A SHAME TOY'S-R-US CLOSED.

For a gun, in your price range I go along with a revolver. A model 10 would fit your budget & be a great one to jump into the revolver pool. A shotgun is 1 everybody should have as well, IMO.

In the broadest sense, consider The Four Food Groups -

Rifle
Auto Pistol
Revolver
Shotgun

Limitless menu items in each group, but without one of each, you’re not eating a balanced diet.

One of my favorites and one I really like to shoot and I think if you can find one it wonít break the bank is the Beretta Cougar.
Now I have two Berettas one in .40 and one in .45 You can get them in 9mm as well
I like my .40 and itís a pleasure to shoot.
Beretta gave them up to Stoeger and my understanding is that they are still well made but not as nice as the Beretta version.

My Cougar 8040

Strictly for fun? Get this, it's the most fun you can have with your pants on! It's a blast to shoot and even more fun with a binary trigger, I have my trigger coming.

Springfield Armory AR pistol in 556, but the 300 BO is available now for home defense.

Mossberg makes a 3 in 1 with 18.5" and 28" barrels and a cruiser pistol grip in addition to the standard stock. I like the idea of that kind of versatility, but I'd prefer 20 gauge instead of 12...at least in my mind the gun itself would be lighter for carrying around hunting (all that hunting I do. I go quail hunting on a preserve maybe once a year). Would I notice that much of a difference in 3/4 of a pound, recoil, etc?
