Default REMINGTON 40X GUYS? ID HELP NEEDED.

It's a wood stocked, 223, single shot, 22" stainless contoured barrel (NOT a bull bbl), sporter pistol grip/monte carlo type stock. BBL markings: left side near receiver is BF, right side a 5? inside of an open triangle??? (barrel contour???), a REP inside an oblong circle followed by a C, ser# 0535*B. The receiver is marked only as Remington 40X. I have a copy of the manual but am not sure if it's a 40X rangemaster, BR, OR WHAT? ANY HELP with specific model/age would be GREATLY appreciated. Sorry IDK how to do pics.

My book shows a Model 40-XC in 223 new for 1995. Also national Match Course repeater with adj. trigger, and wood but disc in 1989 for the wood stock. Perhaps yours is the first. Hope this helps.

Default Thanks for the reply.

Thanks but it does not (feel) that new. As I recall from earlier research or the seller something about 1978??? No synthetic/plastic/medallions. The bolt knob is knurled if that helps. My gut is saying 70's - 80's. "Remington" by phone is of no great help.

The fact that its not a bull barrel makes me wonder if its a 40x action that someone built the rifle upon.

Hmm I also see a Model 40 XB Rangemaster Made in 15 short calibers starting in 1964 but states they had a 27 1/2 inch barrel.

I was leaning towards a range master myself. The literature isn't exactly clear. You would think a RANGE master would have the bull bbl & benchrest stock. This one would be MUCH more lighter/carryable for field work. A name like fieldmaster would make more sense. As they were all "custom" guns any length/contour bbl could be had.

Google Remington serial numbers and find the Remington site for them. Send an email to the URL and wait for a reply. My request took almost two weeks. You can also find the site for the barrel markings that has the matrix for BLACKPOWDER and that will give you the barrel date.

Barrel code is Jan. '85. Pix would help w/stock- possibly a 700 or as mentioned, a special order sporter. Is the stock cutout for a magazine box? Sounds like a good deal either way if it shoots.

THANK YOU. The stock IS NOT cut out, so it was a single shot from the git go. "REMINGTON MODEL 40-X is stamped right into the receiver. YES it shoots WAY better than me. 0.33" @ 200 yards was my best with Hornady match 52gr bthp's. Bug holes quite often @ 100. Got it right before my accident, now with hand feeling loss/neuropathy/shakes, the old H&R Varmintmaster is easier to use. I am able to send pics to a phone # or e-mail. PM me if interested. Thanks again for the help.

Sounds like a winner. Best go with dave1918a2's advice and see what the factory says.

It certainly would be nice to know as much as possible right from the horses mouth, & even though I have a bill of private sale, FL's laws on selling rifles FTF are "kinda lax". I would hate to find out it's hot & have to give it up.

Default 40-XC KS

I don't want to derail this thread but since we are talking Remington production date codes.......

I have a 40-XC KS in 7.62 NATO that has two different letter combinations. DR and BA. I'm thinking the BA (January 2006) is the correct one but I could be wrong. I realize the attached photo isn't great but it shows the layout of the letters. Any thoughts?

Back about the mid 70's had a rangemaster single shot in 222 rem. Remington back then made a 22 cal match bullet in 52grains with a hollow point. 19 grains 4198 and that bullet shot like a house on fire. Probably the easiest rifle for load developement and most accurate one I ever had. Fast forward to 2005 I bought a gently used 40x from Bill Wright @shooters corner. Has the all stainless steel barrel and action single shot with the laminated thumbhole stock. I struggel to get 1" groups. 168 grain SMK, 40-41 grains IMR 4895,win WLR and remington case. scope is a 6x20 Nikon monarch. Does not have the trigger like the old ones did. lawyer proofed. Not being up on remington firearms I heard that all 40x's were made by the custom shop. Last I looked list price was around $2800. Supposedly the barrel is rifled with the 5R type rifling. I paid 1k for it and the gent Bill White or Wright told me he had bore scoped it and said about less than 300 rounds. By mistake they sent me a 399 Win magnum. Maybe should have kept the magnum. No bedding such as glass bedding so over the coming winter will glass bed the action and first 1" or so of the barrel and try out one of Timnet's Calvin eliete double stage triggers. Been shooting double stage triggers in my mil surps for so long find it a challenge to deal with a single stage trigger. Frank
