Question Winchester 1895

Any fans? I picked up this 30.06 TD earlier this year, NIB. Hope to get it to the range before summer is gone.

Love the way it shoulders. I believe this is considered a third generation rifle. My first Japanese made firearm. They do good work!

I have an original in 30/06 and it's one of my favorite rifles. I
don't know if Jap repros are stronger but loads of 45,000 psi
or less are recommended for originals. Mine is in very good
shape and is exceptional shooter. I found that bullets 160gr to
200gr shoot the best. Also mine will not shoot Spitzer bullets.
The new ones will. I'm loading for mine with military match
brass and pulled FMJ bullets from GI issue 30/40 Krag ammo.
I would like to get a original carbine. Mine is a rifle and isn't the
handiest in the thick stuff and it's certainly no FW.

While I was reloading it the best jacketed bullet available was Hornady's 250 grain spire point. According to the reloading manual it launched them at 2,400 fps. It also shot well with 320 grain bullets from an NEI mold at about 1,900 fps.

This is not intended to bad mouth the rifle. It is just a heads up. Most owners do not take the bolts apart but it was possible to assemble Winchester made bolts incorrectly. If that was done then as the bolt was closed the rifle would discharge out of battery. I do not know if Miroku redesigned the bolt so that could not happen. Back in the 1980s Miroku sold some .35 WCF Model 1895s. I wish I'd bought one.

I once had an original Winchester 1895 in .30-'06, but it wasn't in top condition. There were warnings back then about not using factory .30-06 ammunition so I always used lighter handloads in mine. I think the Texas Rangers used some '95s, mainly in .30-40 Krag.

A few years ago I was crossing the street and pawn shop guy
from next town up the river was coming by in traffic and yelled
that he had a 303 Brit for me to look at. I though he had drank
his lunch, I wouldn't walk across the street to look at a Brit 303.
Couple days later I stopped to see what he had out new. Saw
the 303, it was a 1895 Win, with a Sold Tag on trigger guard.
If he had said he had a Winchester for me to look at I would
have owned it.

That's a good enough reason for me. I used to want an 1895 7.62x54mm musket "just because." Despite about 80% of 1895s being that variation they are one of the less common variations in the U.S. I've only seen one. While stripper clips and bayonets seem like a contradiction on Winchester lever actions they make a collectors' oddity.

Didn't TR call that his big medicine rifle or some similar name? I know he hunted lions with it in Africa and probably a lot of other things.

I'd like one in a modern caliber, just because..........

R/E the question about modern, full pressure loads in the 1895 - For what its worth, I have read the original Winchester 1895's had relatively soft steel, and the actions would stretch with use, causing excessive head space. Further, that the modern Japanese copies have harder steel, and that this is not an issue. Makes sense, as I cant picture a modern gun manufacturer chambering a gun for a cartridge who's SAAMI pressure exceeds the ability of the gun to handle properly. Assumptions on my part, of course.

I considered one back when Browning was importing them, but did not care for the way it felt in my hand while carrying it. Ended up buying the Browning model 71 to go along with my original Winchester 71.

The original Winchester Model 1895 in 30-06 can develope headspace problems. What happens is that the face of the bolt itself indents (for lack of a better word) in the round shape of the case head from the cartridge being fired.
Surplus military ammunition was the common blame all the time. Maybe it had something to do with it, I don't know.
It started being a problem right around the same time as the fracturing Low# 03Springfields were being recalled . Some of their problems was heaped onto the Military ammo of the time also.

Anyway, the breech face either being too thin for the force applied,,or the metal too weak.
(heat treat,,these bolts & frames were charcoal blued at 850*F, so at that temp it would be considered a pretty good annealing to the metal).
Maybe a combination of things.

The 'fix' back in the day was to shim the bolt face to bring it back up to spec. That seemed to satisfy things. The bolts did not further set back on their locking lugs or the lugs into the frames.

Not every one of the 30-06 rifles suffered the problem, but enough of them did that the 'word' was not to shoot MilSurp ammo in them.
30-06 was the only caliber effected.
303 or 30 Krag didn't seem to suffer the fate, nor did the 7.62 Russian Muskets

My 30-06 Model 95 from 1915 or '16 (IIRC) is still OK in the Hd/Space dept. I have put a few rounds through it of milsurp variety. But very few. Not much in the accuracy dept with the stuff either dispite the nice bore.
Mines a restock by John Oberlies, Dayton Oh. Done in the 1930's most likely, Maybe the 1920's.

I had one of the Russian 1895 Muskets for a while and sold it. Fun to play with. Ammo was cheap at the time!

Failed to move quick enough one time on a Deluxe Grade 1895 Carbine in 30-03 caliber. I always regret not snagging that one.

The repop 1895's are made of modern steels and HT. No problems for the cartridges they were chambered in. IIRC 270Win and 30-06 were a common chambering for many of them. They handle them just fine.
The older bigger bore rimmed rounds like the 35WCF and the 405 generally are pretty low psi cartridges when compared to the '06 and 270.
I've seen a few of the repro '95's rebored to 9.3x62Mauser and 35 Whelen by their owners and they worked just fine.

That's a beautiful 95 you got there. Great case colors. About 12 years ago I bought a 1905 colt Officer's model .38 and last year traded it and $125 for this 1900 Win. 95 .30-40 Krag. I think it's beautiful. The Colt was in similiar condition. This one has extra screw hole from a side mount site at some point.

Nice one Wyatt. When I bought mine there was a brand new (third generation) 1895 SRC in 30-40. Couldn't afford both so went with the 30.06 since I have plenty of ammo, brass, bullets and dies. Just didn't want to add another caliber.

For those that are unfamiliar with the term SRC = Saddle Ring Carbine.

My dream ‘95 was one of the new SRC in .30-06 but they were just getting too expensive. I might have an original now, but still like the carbine a little better, in spite of the tang safety.
