Default Another head scratcher - Hungarian Arms R-9 for $675?

I just finished watching an auction, and amongst many uninteresting items sold, a bidding war started for this Hungarian Arms Works (FEG?) R-9.

It sold for $675 + 17% commission.

I have one of these sitting at my FFL on consignment hoping to get $275 for it...bought it for $225.

Anyone have an idea what made this one so special? Here are a few pictures.

Maybe somebody mistook it for a Hi-Power? Kind of a model 59 with Browning grips and slide.

That would be my guess, too. Somebody is going to feel the need for some Preparation H when they learn the truth.

Yes, except the burning and itch will be from the wallet area .

Yikes ! Someone duped themselves thinking it is an FEG Hi Power clone ( which actually is a nice gun). This one is an FEG P9R 9mm (also a pretty nice gun-excellent examples sell in the $350- $400 range ).

The P9R is a pretty decent gun, but not $675 worth in my mind.

I agree that someone over paid for sure. I used to collect FEG's and never paid more than $350 for one. And that one was a true HP clone, a PJK-9HP.

Here is a great site for the Hungarian guns.

My guess is that someone thinks they are getting some rare version of a Hi-Power. These are nice pistols, but not $675 worth of nice. I'd be curious to see if it goes back on auction in a few weeks.
