Default Colt AR 15 A2 Government Carbine

Back to 2015. After lugging my AR 15 A2 Delta Elite around for years, I wanted the opposite end of the spectrum with a lightweight / short barrel carbine (pencil barrel).

Finding these here in Switzerland is not easy. I even discussed a few other brands, however sellers were greedy and I was not ready to pay as much for a non-Colt. Another seller had a Colt but wanted 3500 for it. No way.

Finally after I posted a WTB ad, I was contacted by a seller. At first he was talking abt. a very high price (2400), then he admitted not being sure of the value and suggested we meet to see the piece and discuss the price. I mentionned 1200.

Upon inspection it looked in very nice shape. There were several Colt and Magpul mags, an Assault System pouch, a 4X scope (Chinese copy) and 400 rounds of various ammo, incl. 1/2 a battle pack (150 rounds) of nice South African ball M1A3. We settled on 1700.

I bought it and only then did I start my research on what exactly I had (I tend to do that, as there is not so much choice anyway, so might as well grab it and research then). That's when the fun began. Markings say Sporter II, which would indicate a R 6420 model. But these had A1 sights and no brass deflector, which mine has.

I also called Colt to check model and year of manufacture. They told me it was built in 1988 as a R 6520 (G'vt Carbine). So it seems it is a transitional model between the R 6420 and the R 6520.

In any case a very nice rifle, I could not be happier with it.

Since then I took it out regularly for shooting sessions, so I finally decided to clean it and take some fresh pictures.

I also mounted a 4X scope, C-more for Colt.

Not sure I like it though, seems a bit long with an overhang.

I ordered, received and installed a new barrel, 14.5’ M4

So it has a XM4 / 720 look, except for the large pin and slab side. I like it.

First shots at 50 meters indoor

With its predecessor
