my first attempt at attaching knife scales
many of you may remember the two knives I bought last weekend at a gun show and posted here. I also bought this blank and the stabilized, spalted maple blanks. been working on this most of the week when I had time. the scales are attached to 4 pins using Gorilla epoxy. there were a few "aw shucks" moments but it worked out. I learned a lot and may or may not ever do another one. the blank is 512 layer Damascus. lee

Lee, every bit of your handiwork fills me with conflicting feelings: 1) I'm inspired to get to work, and 2) I know there's no way in heck I'm ever going to be able to do anything that comes close to what you've accomplished. You, sir, are an artist - in addition to being a fine, all-around gent. Cheers and please keep posting your project photos.

Erich, thanks buddy. I guess I should take some pics of the things that I spend a lot of my time building: log cabins built from 1/2" to 3/4" logs. lee

HEY LEE, IF YOU REMEMBER, I WAS LESS THAN IMPRESSED WITH THE KNIVES THAT YOU PURCHASED, FROM THE 2 MAKERS THAT ALSO SOLD YOU THS BLANK. I PRAISED THE BEAUTY OF THEIR BLADES, BUT I CRITICIZED THEIR HANDLES AS BEING "GAUDY", AND DETRACTING FROM THE OVERALL LOOK OF THEIR KNIVES.....
WELL CONVERSELY, I THINK THAT YOUR CREATION IS STUNNING ! ! ! THE STABILIZED, SPALTED WOOD SCALES WERE AN EXCELLENT CHOICE. UNADORNED BY ANY DISTRACTIONS, THEIR PLAIN NATURAL BEAUTY SETS OFF THE DAMASCUS PERFECTLY. DESPITE YOUR "AW SHUCKS" MOMENTS, AND ESPECIALLY FOR YOUR FIRST EFFORT, YOUR EXECUTION APPEARS FLAWLESS......
I ENCOURAGE YOU TO CONTINUE WITH ANOTHER PROJECT. I HOPE THAT YOU CHOOSE A GUTHOOK DESIGN BLANK IN DAMASCUS. I'VE BEEN INTO KNIFE COLLECTING FOR 50 YEARS. DAMASCUS GUTHOOKS ARE SELDOM SEEN.........

I like it and think that the wood is a nice match for the Damascus. I looked and can't find the pins?

I need to learn to do that, I have a Case knife that I abused in my youth, and because of that it needs a scale replaced.
Have a blessed day,
Leon

Lee, I don’t suppose you have any “in progress” pics. I have a Condor Kephart blank here, and a block of bird’s eye maple from a forum member, just waiting for me to get off my butt and turn them into a knife.
At some point, probably after it cools off here, I will get impatient and blunder headlong into the project, which is new ground for me. So, I would like to absorb all the information I can ahead of time, as well as draw inspiration from your photos.

Very Nice Wood Choice
Mr. Barner, as others have stated, your choice of wood was perfect, nice match to the Damascus. I have also tried to find the pins without any success but you get my vote for a job well done.

original post edited to add pictures of "during" and "before".
one eye joe, the smaller one in my first post is a gut hook Damascus. I may call and get another one from him some day and also do it in spalted maple. lee
the pins are hidden. I couldn't find any brass the right size for the pre-drilled holes. maybe next time. lee

I REALLY HOPE THAT YOU DO, LEE. THE HIDDEN PINS ARE A PLUS, IN THAT THEY DON'T DETRACT AT ALL FROM YOUR BEAUTIFUL SCALES.....
I HOPE THAT YOU CAN FIND A GOOD LEATHER CRAFTSMAN, THAT CAN FASHION A SHEATH, THAT IS WORTHY OF YOUR CREATION......

Beautiful work, and a very handsome knife. The scales are perfect with the damascus blade.

Lee, PM me the length and diameter of the brass pins you need next time.
I guess now you’re going to have to teach yourself how to make a sheath.

Great job Lee. Four pins and epoxy, yep that will get the job done. Like everything about it. The Damascus, the maple and the hidden pins, very well done. As stated in previous posts the light colored maple compliments the Damascus. Pretty impressive for your first time.
Always look forward to seeing your projects.
