Ruger Security-Six
I picked this one up yesterday. I had a blued one years ago it was my first centerfire handgun. I used to qualify for my carry permit, and did carry it occasionally in cooler weather. This one was made in 1979 even though the original grips are gone the patent pending Hogue Monogrips fit my hand great they are made of hard plastic, not rubber. I did a patent search and found out the patent was applied for in 1978 and awarded in 1980. I shot it today and it didn't disappoint.

Maybe owning too many S&Ws taught me to appreciate a red ramp and white outline but that's my favorite variation and vintage of the Six series. Along with adding sight radius and velocity the 6" barrel helps reduce muzzle blast. Security Sixes are good old guns.

I am a huge fan of the security sixes. I have a "set" of blued ones in each barrel length. Your pics of the stainless one you just got (very nice BTW) has me thinking about a 6-inch stainless one sitting in a pawn shop I frequent and am a good customer of. I've been resisting but it keeps calling to me.

A 6" SS Security Six was my first revolver. My go-to gun for years. Still have it, still shot it regularly.

Yep, those Sixes are classics. Mine is of similar vintage, and the factory grips were much too small for me. So, I did a swap out at about the same time I purchased the revolver. Tens of thousands of rounds down the tube, and she's still tight. Pic:

I just picked up one last week. A 4" stainless. I put a reduced weight trigger and hammer spring in it, and a medium dot front sight on it. I need to find a taller rear sight. I bought it for its ability to handle any factory magnum loads I can find for it. I ........ like it.

Nice! OP enjoy your new purchase.
Back in early 70s when after a long hard trip I finely got my NYS Pistol Permit and now able to buy a handgun. I wanted a Smith 19-4", the problem was just about everybody else wanted one too!
My LGS had only one of the brand new on the market Rugers. He said a few people looked at it but it was still for sale, them like me were waiting to get a 19. I decided after handling it to purchase.
Yes I still have it today a .357-4''. Learned to shoot handgun with that Ruger. After a couple years I learned how to lighten the trigger pull a bit and smooth things out. This was in the era before spring kits came out and no internet directions, it was all done by being careful. Must have did it right the gun still goes bang every time you pull the trigger even in sub zero weather.

I have a 4” Stainless Service Six that I really like. The Six guns were under appreciated. K frame size but much stronger than a K frame. Almost L frame strength in my opinion. They fit perfectly in K frame holsters too.

I totally agree!
When I find one in any reasonable shape, I'm probably getting it.
My problem is that I see very few of them, in my area.

In 1986, I had a deposit down at a local shop on a 4" stainless Security Six. Then I read about the "new model" GP-100 that Ruger was about to start shipping to dealers. I changed my deposit to the 4" blue GP-100 and I still have it. No regrets but now, seeing this beauty, I think about "what could have been".

I wouldn't mind having one.....
A friend has a Stainless one. It's kind of a 'Classic'. Ruger made them right.

I'm not him, but your answer is probably Art Jewel. They make grips in India.
These resemble Herrett's Jordan Trooper, but aren't.

I've always said that the worst mistake Ruger ever made was discontinuing the Six Series revolvers. I've got a 4" and wouldn't part with it. I've been on the lookout for a 2.75" gun for a long time. But there hasn't been one for sale around here for years. It seems that those who have'em keep 'em.

The old Security Six's are solid. Same can be said for the GP100's.
My 1989 GP100 next to my 1975 Security Six

I'll agree that both are solid, but, there is no comparing GP100's to the Security Six series, as least in my mind.
The Security Six series was everything the GP100's should be, but are not.

Hi, ACORN -
Thanks for the compliment on those grips. Here's the info:
The Six I purchased new in 1979. I immediately bought a set of repacent grips. I've still got the original packaging and receipt for those grips.
These are the "Monte Carlo" style Bolong Oil Finished Target Grips, model # RSS3 made by a company named "Grips" in the Philippines. Total cost brand new on 9/10/1979: $19.99.
Sort of fun to reminisce....

Years ago I briefly owned a four-inch formerly-blue Security Six. Very, very worn finish, but shot just fine. I shouldn't have sold it.
I liked it better than the GP100 I also sold. Handy size and weight, with a better trigger than the GP.

I liked my stainless Sec-Six very much, but like the crane lock on the GP-100. If Ruger could make a smaller GP-100 like the Sec-Six series with that lock, it'd be a terrific gun. I've seen a little play in the closed cranes of MANY Sec-Series guns, and Manurhin had some sort of crane lock on their version of that gun, called MR-88. They'd hardly have bothered if they hadn't felt it was an issue.
Although the Ruger crane lock is different, it's the same idea that S&W had with the Triple Lock, something that most S&W fans never mention.
I was surprised that the grips on a gun seen here are Philippine. Sure do resemble the Indian brand that I mentioned. Well, live and learn...

The Ruger S6 series was great hardware.
My first centerfire handgun was a SS 4" model in the mid-70's. At that time, I was young and working in a LGS. The S&W M66 was almost unobtainable at the time and many SS Rugers were sold due to that and price difference.
Last year decided I'd like a replicate of the one I let go of long ago.
Found this one - really enjoy it as a woods gun.
Know it was a business decision, but the GP-100 was marketed as an 'improved design'. It was not. Not bad, just a whole different handgun.

I liked the 6" so much I figured I should try a 4". Liked the 4" so much I figured I better try a 2.75". Only problem now is which one to take on any given day out.

Decided to play around yesterday and tried making some paint dyed wood grips, didnt turn out exactly how I wanted, but thought I would show them anyway.
