Wink Found Some Intereting Knives

No new guns lately, but the wife drug me to an antique store today and I found these. Maybe not worth much, but I found them interesting and reminiscent of what my Grandfather carried.

I like that first one, the Ka-Bar folder.

The third one is reminiscent of the Bar Knife/tool that was posted the other day.

The third one is a fisherman’s knife. I believe the scallop in the scaling blade is for sharpening fish hooks. The camillus knife was one in a series of wildlife knives. They had a bear, wolf, etc. they came in a display box

Nice knives

Default Slip Joint Names.

Unless qualifying descriptive words accompany the name, the second knife, which you labeled a stockman, is the classic Folding Hunter. Admittedly, if sweet Suzie field dressed her deer with any knife that folds I would not risk offending her by telling her that her knife is not a Folding Hunter. There's no telling Buck their 110 is not a Folding Hunter, but Case, Queen, Camillus and most other manufacturers of Buck 110 knock offs named them something else. A stockman has one long blade and two secondary blades one pivoting on each end. Qualifying descriptive words are used for uncommon variations like 4 or 6 blade stockmans.

Whether or not they have the fish scaler tool, knives shaped like the third knife are toothpicks. The large, 5" closed, toothpick with fish scaler has been a popular fisherman's knife for a very long time. The "scallop" near the fish scaler tool's tang is a beer cap lifter. It was common for large toothpicks to have a small sharpening stone inlaid in their side in place of the manufacturer's marker plate. The stones had a groove running down their center for sharpening fish hooks.

I remember the lock back in picture one being in stores about 40 years ago. They were a lot less expensive than Buck 110s.

I will not argue categorization with anyone. Right or wrong, I have learned that everyone uses their own descriptions. I tried perhaps erroneously to describe them. Maybe I have watched too much Cutlery Corner. Perhaps you have a link to the correct descriptions. Thank you.

Nice knives. I would love to own a Ka-Bar like the first picture, and the etched folding hunter. What is the blade length of the Ka-Bar??

I have not found a link I'm happy with so I'll improve this reply as I find them.

Wikipedia's pocketknife page is a start: Pocketknife - Wikipedia It's definition of Stockman writes they have master clip and secondary sheep's foot and spey blades. Most do but some manufacturers substitue a pen blade for either the sheep's foot or spey blades. Case has made most of their smaller stockman patterns with one pen blade since at least 1960. Here's a picture thread on Case Stockmans: Lets See Some Stockman - All About Pocket Knives

I'm not an expert on knives. I have, however, owned stockman models by various makers, and folding hunters by K-Bar, Queen, and Case. There's a non fisherman toothpick in my jacket pocket at the moment.

I agree with K22Fan's categorization of the knives. There is universally accepted terminology for various configurations of folding knives, just as there is terminology we agree to when discussing firearms. Yes, others may call a magazine a clip, or a Colt Woodsman an automatic. We know what they mean. That doesn't make them correct.

OK, but where is that universally accepted terminology properly codified?

Shoulda, the edged blade is 4 inches. In this example, the lock action is still tight and crisp.

Those are interesting knives, especially that Ka-Bar. I can’t quite figure out what the handle is from your pics.

The first Ka-Bar is a Model 1179, the description says the handle is rosewood. The second Ka-Bar fisherman's toothpick is apparently a Model 1128. My 1128 has condition issues, but is still an interesting, functional knife.
