Default Victor tool Company Woodsman

My sister gave me this today. Victor tool company model 681. I can't find much about this model, but some vague instances where it may have been included in a military survival kit? Any of you guys that might know the history on this? I believe the case to be original to the ax but I have no way to substantiate that.

That really looks like a military type survival tool, but I just wonder why they would paint the handle bright red when everything military seems to me to be green? I wasn't in the Service so another veteran may know. Looks awesomely dangerous to be on the business end of that blade, though!

Here's a thread on the US Militaria Forum that discusses these. Interesting info, and info on contacting the company.

You have a great sister to give you that! Mine would "dispose" of it.... That is a Woodsmans Pal and I have never seen one with a red handle, I wonder if it was specific for some theater? Nice score with the sheath. Kyle

Here is a link to some info on yours, looks like part of a USAF Global Survival Kit, SK-NA-2 Aircrewmans from early 60's.

The Woodsman’s Pal has intrigued me for many years, but I never had any use for it, particularly at the price. Now I am at a point in my life where I buy a lot of blades I have little use for, so I could be tempted. However, I have scratched that particular itch for now with The Baryonyx Machete, for about the same price. The designer says he was taking aim at the Woodsman’s Pal, and it is a brush-clearing monster.

The Woodsman’s Pal seems to be a lot more portable, however. That survival version is pretty darn cool. I’d be tempted to clean up the edges and use it just enough to try it out. It is unusual enough to preserve as is.
