So this whole thing started out as a need to pop something to replace some crummy grips that came on my Charter Arms Pitbull. I was doing to some reading/looking and Altamont came up a few times:

Altamont Company - Pistol Grips, Rifle Stocks, Knife Handles

I decided to give them a try and landed up getting not only a set for my Charter, but also for my S&W 629. I picked up a pair for more or less traditional coke bottle target grips in Walnut. I ordered the set on Sat, they arrived on Friday.

First off, I'll say that the finish of these stocks is superb. The Charter set was in high gloss, not my favorite, but the Cherry color really pops with gloss. The Walnut stocks are in matte and they look superb. The fit is also superb with absolutely zero play or gaps. I took them out for a spin yesterday and I'm beyond pleased with their products, especially given the price. The grips on the Charter were the real star, they are far more comfortable than the stock rubber set. I debated getting the checkered grips, but even with the high gloss and my very sweaty hands from the 100+ heat index, I had no problem holding on to the pistol. (I liked them so much that I'll be adding a set of their Charter grips for my Bulldog in silverback here soon.)

One side note, funny enough, adding such a nice set of grips on a Charter revolver seems like putting dress shoes on a pig...but at $40, I can't complain.

I have several sets of J Frame Altamont grips, and most AI really like, but a couple have a loose fit. I put a little putty in and it takes up the slack so they don't move. I find I much prefer Culina grips.

Possibly an odd question, are they sets you have "pinned"? Both sets came with metal rod pins on the top and bottom areas of the grip. For the heck of it, I installed them with/without the pins and the pins really tighten them up. There's no play in these what so ever with the pins installed.

Have had, and still have some Altamonts on stuff....currently some boot grips from them on a M49.
But - just cannot warm up to the laminate grip design.
I know, they're strong, stable, affordable, etc.
But, they look like....laminate.

I miss the old days.

I myself have had nothing but great service and products from Altamont. Sure the Culina's are probably much better but they cost much more and some time before they are made. For a nice set to spruce up say a model 64 or a model 10 I think they are perfect. If you have a rare and/or an expensive model then maybe it is worth going for that extra bang. Enjoy

FYI I had a loose set and I called them and they sent me a replacement.

I recently picked up 2 sets of Altamont grips. One for my 686 and the other for a 1911. They are not perfect, but are worth it for the price. I would buy again for a general shooter. If I want grips for something special, I would probably turn to someone like Craig Spegel.

Yes, they are pinned. the sloppy fit was around the frame, front to back movement.

I got a pair of Altamont faux ivory grips on my New Vaquero. They needed some fitting and while they look sharp, they are way too slippery for my taste.

I really do like the looks of altamont on smith revolvers especially the side view, they’re just a little thin for my hand.

I love Altamont Grips! I have a pair of their Super Rosewood grips on both my S&W PPK/S and my Taurus Judge Magnum.

Reviving an OLD thread ! Call me a recoil-lovin-fool but I really like wood grips.

I can't say enough for these Altamont grips (Rosewood Combat) I just got for the 629 PC.

Not many words needed. Good pricing, perfect fit (hand & gun), and good communication. And damn, I like how they look.
