Bubba rang my doorbell
Shortly after 1:30 p.m. a neighbor rang my doorbell. He lives at the far end of the neighborhood. He was holding a shoebox. He introduced himself as Chuck and said he noticed I often wore a Glock cap when I walked each day. He asked if I might help him reassemble his Glock 23.
SURE Bubba, step right in.
There was no Glock 23, just 3/4 of the parts that become a Glock 23. There were no sights/RSA/magazine/slide lock lever and spring/magazine release and the receiver had been cut crooked and short to a subcompact size. The feed ramp looked like it had been polished with a Dremel tool. The finish on the slide is heavily worn.
I pointed out it’s many misgivings and suggested he return it to Glock, Inc. for total (and costly) makeover. I estimated a receiver and small parts to be $150.00 maybe more, two mags $70.00-$100.00 depending on where he bought them, steel sights $25.00/NS $65.00, refinish the slide $75.00 or more, and a barrel $125.00+ if the original didn’t work. I told him to call Glock and ask. He looked disturbed, said he could buy a new one easier than that. He asked if I would be interested in it. I told him no. He said how about $100.00? I replied “not at half that price”.
I just looked through my junk trunk. I have a receiver, all the small parts, RSA, old set of steel sights, and a single stack 10 round Glock 23 magazine. I even have a Lone Wolf barrel to fit it.
If he comes back later to accept the $50.00 I offered I believe I will buy it.

I don’t understand the desire to hack up a costly, major component of a firearm.
That is why I have a spare receiver; a friend took a gen. III receiver he bought used and removed the rail and finger grooves and relieved the area behind the trigger guard where it joins the frame. Then he decided he didn’t like it.

One of the advantages of buying a Glock is that you really don't need to do anything to it. It will work fine out of the box.
Why people feel compelled to mess with things that work is beyond me.

I wonder, how did the pistol end up in that condition? Did an adult child take it apart to see how it worked, or is there another story?

I believe he is an engineer; a Georgia Tech graduate.
He must be a chemical engineer...his mechanical skills are quite poor.

My degrees are in Chemical Engineering. Yet (at least at that time when the BS engineering degree took 5 years) we all were required to take some basic courses in both mechanical and electrical engineering when I was an undergraduate at Ohio State.

Having worked with a number of mechanical engineers over decades, the degree doesn't ensure either hands on skills or understanding of basic mechanical practices or principles.
Brief example: back in the late 1960's I got borrowed from whatever class I was in to consult with a slew of about to graduate (at the top of their class) mechanical engineers. They'd been tasked with designing engine frames for donated new car/truck engines for a dynamometer and various other purposes in the new engineering lab. They couldn't figure out where the motor mounts were supposed to be. When I pointed out the drilled & tapped bolt holes, one of them insisted that was where the oil filter went. The oil filter was in plain sight.
Over the decades, things got worse.

I have no idea how my neighbor cut that Glock receiver but I believe he used a drywall board saw while standing up in a canoe in class 3 rapids.

I had someone do something similar during hunting season. One of the guys brought over a well-abused Mossberg 500 12g to see if I could fix it.
It was well past fixing and I offered him $75, which he accepted. Fast forward about a year and I had this:
Now, very little of this gun is original! The receiver was damaged, along with the bolt being very worn. I sold the wood stock and forend. Only parts that are original are the barrel (cut down to 19"), safety, and trigger group. Most of the replacements were eBay including the nice choke barrel for birds.

SURE Bubba, step right in.
I estimated two mags $70.00-$100.00 depending on where he bought them.
Where are you buying your mags? I have some "RARE" Glock 22 mags for sale- 2 @ 100 shipped to your door. I also have a bridge you might like!!!
Are you sure he did not have a hidden camera in his glasses?
Best ( worst ) Bubba story I have heard in a long time, Thank You for sharing. How did you keep from laughing?? I was waiting for the punch line and unfortunately there was not one. Makes you think about buying a used gun?? Be Safe,

Back in my gunsmithing days, I was brought a number of handguns (in pieces) in shoe boxes or cigar boxes. The common excuse was, "I trying to clean it..."
When I was working part time in a gun shop, I had a man bring in a Remington 1100. He had been carrying it in a gun rack mounted, cross-ways, on his four wheel UTV. It seems that when you drive between two trees, you should allow for the extra width of your long gun. Not only had he detroyed the butt stock, he had broken off the extension that houses the action spring.

I forget what year truck it was, but a friend had a pick-up where the oil drain plug was right above a frame support. You remove the plug to change the oil and all of the old oil splashed on the support.

He may be a mechanical engineer. I have discovered a few engineers who proved that if given enough time and money almost anyone can graduate in the very bottom of their class from a college somewhere.

Good, if not GREAT news, for Bubba Chuck, as well as other home hobbiests. Mangled Glocks like Chuck’s can be taken to Glock, Inc. for repair and a new frame with internals and other small parts such as sights and the RSA will be installed and sold to him for $100.00 plus tax. The slide will be inspected and rebuilt if necessary too. The barrel (if needed) and mags cannot be purchased there at the plant.
Walk ins have a turn around time of 2 hours, while shipped items will require 3-4 weeks.
I hope he took my advice and called Glock, Inc. today.

My question is did your neighbor do the damage himself or did he buy the gun from some bubba that convinced him it could easily be reassembled as a functional gun? I imagine there has been a few junk gun parts in a box sold at garage sales also. I am guessing the gun came from someone's junk drawer but that might be my wanting to give your neighbor a pass.

From the few minutes I spent with him, I believe Bubba Chuck and his college friend, Bud Weiser, did all the cutting/grinding/butchering/ losing parts by themselves.

Look at it this way: Even if you could rebuild the gun, and even if you could get it to function correctly, and even if you could live with the damaged cosmetics, and even if the price was right, what would you have?
A Glock.
And an extra-ugly Glock at that.
'Nuff said.

If he shows back up ck for a serial number. You don't want to assemble someone else's 80% frame pistol. While it could be a bubba job it might also be a bubba trying to build his own no serial number pistol. While I am an attorney I'm not up to speed on that part of firearms law. I do seem to recall there being a problem w a person other than the owner doing a ghost build. There seem to be a lot of bubbas who want to do ghost builds.
