Every Collection Needs A Federal Labs MkI, 1.5 Bore
Another forum member picked this up in an estate deal. Knowing I was a sucker for things like this, he rang, and now it is mine.
In about 1925, Federal Laboratories, a supplier of police equipment, felt there was a need for a serous tear gas launcher. They contracted with Webley (England) to take surplus military 1.5" bore flare guns and make this version of tear gas cannon. They developed a range of cartridges that would later become the 37mm gas & flare cartridges.
Federal Labs sold these remanufactured launchers until about 1930 when they developed an 'on purpose' hammerless model . This gun was used by Auburn Prison in New York...and from the scars probably worked during the 1929 prison riot and fire there. Note that the Webley name does not appear anywher and that the Federal Labs imprint is in the wood just below Auburn Prison. The canvas case is an original case which I got with the gun.

Does ammo for it exist? I would have to try it if I could get some.

Yes--at least unloaded casings are new mad. I haven't gotten one yet as they are pretty expensive. I did talk to the manufacturer and got some ideas. I believe they are turned aluminum. with pretty thick walls. I did notice that the later models had very thick recoil pads. Wonder what that is telling me?
