Default RG 22 short

The pawn shop that takes my money has a LNIB RG 22 short revolver that he will sell for $50. For some strange reason I am drawn to it. I know what these guns are said to be so the question is: should I buy it or spend the money on mental health treatment?

I've picked up a few RG's over the years. The most I ever paid was $35 for a double action 22LR in the mid 80's. It shot better than my Colt New Frontier. In the mid 90's, I paid $10-15 for a 22 Short model (I think a RG10 or12) it has a hard time hitting an opossum in the head at 3 feet!

$50 mental health is otherwise called: 2 boxes of ammo for a good bolt action! You might think of doing that!

Face-to-face, as a what-the-heck, maybe. Not something I'd want to bother with a NICS on. Pass.

Probably one of the most useless revolvers ever made. They use
to sell those 22 short revolvers dirt cheap in all the magazines
for like $5.99. Some of them will discharge a cartridge, that's
about it.

Back when I was really young, I wanted either an RG-22, or a Raven 25 in the worst way. They had the one, overriding feature that I absolutely had to have in a handgun.

They were cheap.

I mean the cheapest Smith & Wesson was about 100 bucks. It might as well have been a million. I had about as much chance of coming up with that, as 100. I think the RG/Ravens were about $25 or so. I could at least imagine coming up with $25.00. I never did, but I could imagine it. Those RG's and Ravens kept the dream alive.

I'd offer $20.00 just for old times sake. What's the worst they can say? No. On the other hand they might be glad to get rid of it.

An RG .22 almost worked for John Hinkley, Jr. in his un-successful attempt to assassinate President Reagan.
Rohm parts were made in Germany and assembled into complete guns
in Miami, FL. They are generally thought of as poor quality and cheap.
John Hinkley, Jr. was not guilty because of insanity.
So, maybe if you are thinking of buying one, it would be better to
spend the money on that other option.

I've owned two RG revolvers in my time. One .22 and one .38. There are stories and valid reasons for me having them. But, that's for another time.
Rgs are total junk and a waste or money. Probably more dangerous to the user than the bad guy. If it works at all, you can't hit the side of barn.
The only useful purpose for them that I've ever found is trade fodder for a gun buyback. Don't do it.

I actually had an rg.38 for a year. Used it as a woods gun. Sold it and made $25

The Raven .25 is a much better pistol than it's given credit for. I believe it is clearly the best of all Saturday Night Specials.

This is why I never badmouth the .22. John Hinkley knocked 4 people flat in about 1.5 seconds with this piece of junk. Anything that dangerous/lethal gets my respect!

Indeed..!

OP, check price and availability of .22 short ammo.

It's a carp shoot as to mechanical function, of RGs...
and if they do 'cycle', how long that will last.

If ya really REALLY just want it, offer $25.

If you're going to get an RG you should hold out for the .44 Magnum. Model 29-2 and its Spanish, American and German cousins

I think it all comes down to the question of how much money is $50 to
you? Is it part of the price of a better gun that won't be bought if you
buy the RG or is it pocket change? If the RG is like new it's surely
worth $50 just to play around with but it's not likely to be something
you would want to bet your life on.

That's a "hang on tight and close your eyes" gun

It was probably the ammo more than the gun that knocked
4 people flat. He was using "Devastator" .22 hollow points,
made to explode on contact. Made by Bingham Ltd. of Norcross,
GA.

When Sirhan Sirhan assassinated Robert Kennedy he was also using a
.22. An Iver Johnson Cadet. A little better quality gun than the RG, but
not much.

A good one to get, remove or snap off the firing pin.
Spray-paint gold.
Place in visible, close proximity to your secured quality hardware.
If/when a burglary occurs, this'll fit the bill for one of the things being sought by the suspect.
He absconds with it, not wishing any further risk.
Done.

That’s right, he was. But IIRC, and I may not, none of them actually exploded on or in any of the victims.

I’d rather buy ammo for $ 50. Or a good lunch. Or a nice bottle of wine. Or flowers for the lady.

It is called a gun because it might go ''bang''when you pull the trigger. But then,it might not.
The pleasure you get from an item you paid a little too much for will be outlasted only by the sorrow of having been had from an item that didn't last.

My grandmother had one of these little pests back in the sixties. It had no functioning cylinder bolt. The user aligned and held the cylinder. What could go wrong? It was and is the definitive Saturday Night Special.

The RG10 is the original Saturday Night Special. I answered many calls for service where the little .22 short was used. I've seen head shots where the bullet would penetrate the forehead skin and travel around the outside of the skull and come out the back of the head. Minor injury. I have also responded to a shooting where RG10 was used in a homicide, shot through the heart. I have one simply as a collector item from the days of old.
