Question for Collectors of PD Marked Guns
Found a Ruger GP 100 marked GPNY and wondering where it came from.

The GPNY was made for the NYPD (New York City Police).
It is a stainless steel 38 Special double action only revolver made with four inch and 3 inch barrels.
Most seem to have had the matte finish.
They arent "rare" but not very common either. The four inch is found more often than the 3"

Does anyone know whether Ruger sold this model, labeled as such, on the commercial market too, or can all such guns be assumed to be the former property of NYPD officers?

I think I've seen them on BOTH Ruger forums, .net and .com.
No hammer spur.
I'll leave them to those who collect NYPD guns. But if you have one, Buffalo Bore makes a hot Outdoors .38 load that will give serious power.

Thanks for the info wheelgun28 and texas star. I was wondering about the bobbed hammer, which this one has. It feels pretty stout and should handle those hot loads.

The base gun is a GP100, a bit sturdier revolver meant to compete with S&W's L frames. I think I read where GP stands for General Purpose.

A similar NYPD-related revolver question. Was there any special meaning to the "NY-1" yoke stamping of the S&W Model 64 revolvers used by the NYPD? And was that same stamp used on any other revolver models used by NYPD?

In the SCSW, 3rd, there is about a half page devoted to the M64 NY-1. Basically, the NYPD wanted a stainless steel DAO .38 special revolver. These were sent to the NYPD and sold to the individual officers.

That much I know - but my question is whether there is some specific meaning of, or purpose for, the "NY-1" stamp. Does that indicate a SS gun or something else? Was it used on any other NYPD revolvers?

After communications with folks on this forum and other places I was 99% sure the gun was a NYPD gun. However, one gentleman who came through the ATL shows who carried a Manhattan PD badge swore that NYPD never bought these guns. He is not a regular (after many years of doing these shows I know the regulars) but twice came through with the same statement. So I sent for a Ruger letter, and guess what? The gun was produced in Jan 1991 and shipped directly to the City of New York Police Department. I tried to get the guy to bet me $50 before I receive the letter but he turned me down. Oh well. Hopefully someone can find this helpful.

The "Jipknee" as those of us in the know call them, is a fine fightsman's pistol if there ever was one. The big heavy full lug barrel and beefy magnum frame keeps the gun on target wondefully even with hot .38 +P duty loads. The fixed sights are rugged and virtually unbreakable, still offering a decent sight picture. All stainless for good corrosion resistance. The neoprene insert grips are wonderfully comfortable. The DAO mechanism keeps things simple and can keep the officer out of certain legal grey zones.
Overall an uncommon and underated duty revolver. You'd do well to cherish it. The GPs are some of the strongest DA .357s ever made, and in .38 special only, the lifespan might as well be indefinite barring abuse.
