Sig P220
I've had a run of good luck lately having gotten a Colt Detective Special a few weeks back for 200 bucks. Yesterday I bought this P220 for 300 bucks which I though was a pretty good buy.
It's a 1990 west German model. Mechanically sound, quite a bit of holster wear on the slide but the frame isn't worn nearly as much. It has a set of tritium sights that I'm assuming are factory because there's no brand name on them but there as dead as a doornail. I think I'll contact Sig tomorrow and see if I can get some info on the sights so I can get the tubes replaced.
I'm considering either having the slide Cerakoted or parkerized I have really decided yet.

I had a P220 and sure did like it.
I think I paid a little bit more than you. Say around $375.00.
Was a PD trade in.
Traded it for a Sig P-6.

FWIW, I like it the way it is. However, if you’re going to have the slide refinished, I’d go with black nitride or black parkerising. Cerakote is a paint that isn’t as durable. Black nitride is VERY wear resistant.
Wish I had a 220 in .38 super

Very nice!
I have its very slightly younger brother, bought off my Dad's FFL in 1991 while I was still in the FBI Academy. I picked it up on the way to New Orleans, took it out of the box, fired a 50 round qual course with it, stuck in the holster they gave me for my issued 226, gave the 226 back, and carried the 220 for the next 25 years. About halfway through my kids gave me the wooden Hogues. We retired together a couple of years ago.

I've had my P220 for a long time. Very accurate .45 ACP with cast bullets. Don't recall shooting jacketed bullets in it but I suspect it would also shoot them well.

I had one with a nickel slide that I bought from CDNN. It was advertised as being a trade-in from Texas DPS. I don't think it had ever been shot. It worked fine with my cast reloads and was accurate. It was just a bit big for me and I sold it to a friend.

You got a Colt DS for $200? And the 220 for $300?
I sure wish I could shop for guns where you do.

Sig will refinish the slide and replace the night sights. They will also go through the gun and replace any parts that need it. The only thing they won't refinish is the anodized frames. I had them do my service weapon, which I bought as a used police trade-in.

I have two 220's and a 245 (now called a 220 compact), all in 45. These guns are hard to beat at any reasonable price!

Great find for the price.
I like the look of her just 'as is', also. All business.
I love mine.

Best pistol to me ever is the Smith Model 28 and the Sig 220...flat works every time and shoots well to 25M which is all the distance I need ....or less.

I own a lot of .45s. But my only DA/SA .45 is a Sig P220. For good reason too. As far as I'm concerned its the best DA/SA .45 out there.
Your gun looks fine to me. Just shoot it as is and enjoy.

Had a buddy who used one of the West German Sig p220 in 45acp to shoot steel plate matches. If I remember right that particular model had the breech block assembly pinned in place. He shot it so many times that the breech block was actually loose within the slide. Sent it back to Sig and they fixed it. These were not barn burner loads, just standard velocity 45 acp loaded with hard cast 230 grain round nosed bullets. They would run your ammo through a chronograph to make sure you made major power factor. Pretty easy to do with a 45. Seem to recall that the P239 series had the breech block assembly permanently installed in the slide. And than Sig goes and cancels the the P238 series of pistols. Bean counters at work my friends. Then Browning/FN decides to do the same with the High Power. Couldn't afford a new HP so bought one of the Israeli ones way before CDI had that disastrous fire which wiped out their entire inventory of all firearms. Far as I am concerned neither my Sig P6 nor my P239 in shorty fourty will never be sold as long as I am above ground. Frank

I paid the same $300 for my P-220 and I got 4 extra mags, 2 double mag pouches and a nice thumb break holster. However, compared to mine andy52's (the original poster's) looks new. Mine has about 60% of its bluing, the old heel magazine release, the early porpoise nose slide front end shape and it does not fire patriotic .45 ACP cartridges. On the other hand, mine shoots very tight 25 yard groups, it has not yet jammed, and for me it hits at point of aim. It might even be worth $302.
I've never been the slightest bit tempted to change the character of my P-220 by refinishing it.

Really wasn't shopping for either one of them. Both came from people I know which basically was
"Hey, I've got this gun if your interested"...

I was going to contact them about the sight anyway so I'll ask about the complete rebuilt when I do.

I agree that SIG will refinish at fair price. I sent my 226 back for a package deal that cleaned, inspected and replaced springs AND installed SIG night sights for about 150.00 (I think) - with out the refinish. It was a Father's Day special if I recall. I had it back in about 2- 3 weeks. SIG even sent back the old parts.

JUST AN FYI/HEADS UP.
I have a Sig 239 in stainless that someone nickel plated the whole thing. The slide was not an issue for SIG, BUT the nickel "changed the specs" of the frame which Sig DID have a big issue with. They refused to do any work on an altered frame & I had to buy a new frame, SO I'd talk to Sig before doing anything. Besides that wear looks to be more on the frame than the slide, to me. Congrats on a good gun & great price. A Sig factory action enhancement, short trigger, short trigger re-set package have worked out well on my P239, P226, P220. Depending on your intended use, I might just leave it alone.

They built these old guys to shoot. I have a 1999 model P245, a pleasure to shoot and carry. Enjoy your new friend.

I bought a W. German P220 about 18 years ago. The going rate at that time was up to $600. I paid $550 for mine.
I carried it for about 10 years. I bought it used almost certainly as a police trade in (lots of holster wear on it) and I have put about 15,000 rounds through it. Who knows how many went through it before I got it. I had to replace the recoil spring and that's it.
I know it needs to be refurbished but I don't carry it anymore. I want to do it before I pass it on to my kids though. It's too good of a pistol to let it go.
The pistol is very accurate. I've been known to draw a big crowd at the gun range where people who started out laughing because I set the steel target back so far ended up gathering everyone at the range to watch me shoot it. Then they got the range master to see if he could do better. Apparently he was the club's hot shooter. He couldn't do better than I was doing at 25 yards even though he was using a 629 S&W with the 8 3/8" barrel on it. We matched shots until I ran out of ammo. I told him I had another gun in the truck if he wanted to wait a second. I came back with my own 629 and suddenly he decided the people who run the range didn't want us wasting money on lights. We had shot so long it got dark. I think he believed he was in trouble since I had the same gun he was shooting. I smiled because I had just bought the Smith and wasn't good at shooting it yet. But that club is so flush with money they have bought up every piece of land for half a mile in every direction. They weren't worried about the lights. He was worried about getting bested.
Still at 25 yards that Sig will shoot with pretty much any pistol. Actually it will shoot great out to about 65 yards. 2" groups are not uncommon at 50 yards with it. It still shoots just as accurate after all these years too. I get it out once in a while and shoot it but I like to concentrate on shooting the pistol I'm carrying so I don't have to think about how to aim if push comes to shove.
