Red face Is There a Cure For the Sickness?

Anyone know of a cure for the sickness of buying/lusting for more guns? After I left police work 25 years ago I was quite happy with my WG P226 and my Python. Over the years I found myself with over 30 guns including a couple of long guns. I had some unexpected bills from a vehicle and later emergency surgery. I sold most of my guns keeping my Python and a few others.

Now I am back to twenty something. A little over a year ago a collector from a nearby town answered my ad for a S&W 65. I met him halfway, purchased the 65 and he showed me several other guns he wanted to sell. I ended up purchasing over $ 3000 in sweet K frames and another Python.

I thought I was done and would stick to what I had. The sickness has grown and I find it is not restricted to Smiths. I have 1 Sig, 3 HK's, 1 Cougar 45, 1 shield, and 3 Glocks. And I want more of each!

I dreamed last night of buying a P7M13 to replace my long lost love. Anyone know of any help available. (Just don't ask me to give up anything.)

Death?

Maybe form a large pool having members throw in 6 or 8 shooters each and every couple of weeks the inventory rotates? You'd get to shoot a different pistol or two then pass them on.

If there is a cure for this,
I don't want it,
I don't want it,
If there's a remedy,
I'll run from it,
Run from it,
Think about it all the time,
Can't get it off my mind,

This thread sounds like my wife!

"How many guns do you have?"

So far, I have been able to get by with a non answer, or the usual "More than I need!"

There is no cure. Every time I get my collection to where I want it another urge comes along or I see something posted here that becomes my next “I got to have one of those”. Just learn to live with it. Helps to have a girlfriend who could care less how many guns I own as long as I don’t sell “her” 3” model 65.

It’s extremely difficult.

If you’re talking about the HK P7 M13, I wanted one since I tried a friend’s one many years ago and was hugely impressed. Bought an M13 AND an M8 the same day at an auction. Now I feel I don’t need more HK pistol (resisted on the Mk 23 SOCOM, beyond the cool factor, it’s expensive and quite ugly frankly).

I have a nice small assortment of late eighties / early nineties S&W revolvers, so I recently refrained from buying a 4’’ 686 (ok I bought a 4’’ 586 the same day, and a 4’’ nickel Diamondback .38, and an AR 15 SP1). And I hardly took a look at the 2 1/2” 66-3 just days later (since I already bought a 2 1/2” 686-4 just weeks before).

A couple of years ago, I didn’t have an HP, so I also bought not one but two FN HP, a commercial 1952 and a Capitan with tangent sights from 1979 at an auction. Now I don’t see the need for another HP, and declined a reasonably price 50’s Danish military HP.

Bought a 1943 Colt 1911 A1 for $ 1500, so now I can decline all the Ithaca and Rem Rand priced between 2 and 3 grands.

And I almost always make an offer below the asking price (except at auctions, where I pre set my limit and stick to it). Some sellers accept, some don’t. That also slows the influx.

Lastly, I live in Switzerland and while there is a large reservoir of guns for a small country, there is still a much smaller choice than in the US, especially for American firearms.

It’s extremely difficult.

Death is a cure. Being really old could be a cure. I'll let you know in a decade or two. Bankruptcy is a cure. I bet marriage is a cure, too, because the majority of my guns came after I was married to someone. This was a rather routine occurrence in my misspent youth/younger days......and I know you have all seen the story about why guns are better than spouses.....you can have more than one. You can have favorites and they don't get jealous or complain. You can take one out a lot and leave the others home and they don't get jealous or complain. Etcetera............

A contrary voice...if one is actually desired.
For years, make that decades, I was avid in expanding my collection, and created a very nice one.
Believe it or not, age can change interests and priorities.Changes in health can do the same.
Not just with guns, but with other interests as well."Stuff" can become less important for some, while others crave more.It can get to be like the Winchester mansion in Ca..As long as it's under construction, they can't die.
I've sold most of mine, 80% or more..My only regret is that a few went too cheaply.I can still have 80% of the fun, with just the few faves that I kept. I have no kids(not that I would force any interest on them) or close friends with the interest.
Not interested in aggravating my tinnitus. Not interested in being shot by an idiot at the range, as I feared on my last visit( and a range is my only shooting option)
Unlike my other examples of craftsmanship or art, guns can't be left out, displayed, and enjoyed in that way. They have to be kept in a safe.

Can't help you there. I posted some time back about the time I had taken a few handguns out and had them laid on the bed, the wife comes in and says "you have too many guns". I said I do not. She says "you have 10 guns, I just counted them." I said, then you didn't see all of them. I've never been accused of being too bright.

1. Don't go to anymore gun shows, gun stores or gun ranges. 2. Don't watch anymore gun videos. 3. Stop visiting gun forums. 4.Cancel any gun magazine subscriptions. 5. Move to a state that hates guns. 6. Let your wife handle all the money.
Do the last and you probably will not need to do the others.

First of all get the heck off of this forum. I was perfectly happy with my old duty gun and one other for nearly 40 years. Then I found this place and it's been down hill ever since.

If you know how many guns you have there is a good chance that you don't have enough.

Collecting gun is not the illness, it is the cure for idleness and boredom.

When you find it is difficult to remember just what guns you do have, and you buy a gun and take it home to find you have an identical one one. You find a gun in your desk drawer, and don't know where it came from or why it's there. Someone asks if you have (XYZ) model, and you don't remember if you do or not.

You're beginning to have enough guns. The unfortunate thing is they have made many more different models and continue to do so. I recall stating I'd never have one of those "lock" guns, now I own 3 . It never ends.

A buddy asked me today if I knew of a gun club that had secure storage for guns, as his uncle was going into an assisted living facility and they don't allow any guns. I could never do that.

Most of my short time owning guns I had 3 or 4 that I was totally happy with. Then one day something inside my brain clicked and I bought my first pre lock S&W. Once I realized that no one makes anything this good anymore and all that ever will be made are already built I started gathering more.

Well the bad news is there is no cure, an you have graduated from single purchase to multiple purchases at one time.I have done a double buy at one time once ( see pic) 2 1980 NIB model 57's. Like I do, just keep saying " investment". Although it is really not in the short term, unless you are buying low and flipping. My suggestion is buy collectibles, if you are going to keep buying. And remember, the nice pieces need fancy custom grips

There is no cure. Resistance is futile. Whatever size your gun safe, it is not big enough.

Nobody on this forum (me included) can cure this disease, we are all carriers of it and only spread this disease when we come in contact with a likely host.

"How many guns do you have??"

A question periodically posed to me by a former girlfriend who was anti-gun.
I would hmm and hamm, slowly start off with "I think the number might be...."
and then she would interrupt me "I know you.You know exactly how many you have"". ....She was right about that.I could have rattled off the specs of everyone of them, where I bought it,etc.etc.and the number at that time was north of 50.

.Given her history of abuse, she should have been happy to have a gunnie on her team. Not so.
I also had the question put to me,"Would you shoot me one day?" To which I'd say,"Are you going to stab me one day or run me over with the car?"
The reality was that I would never ever do anything to harm her and that I would have stepped in front of a bullet for her....Oh well.

When I left the military I did not feel like shooting for over a year after shooting a lot of full auto and rifle.

Finally I joined a pistol club a year later and wish I had only thirty guns now and would not need a spread sheet for "inventory control".

Males are genetically more pre-disposed to be affected by compulsive gun collecting disorder (CGCD), while women often suffer from the female version; collecting shoes and hand bags and other knick knacks.

Yeah, when gals have asked me,"Why do you need more than one gun?" , I point to their closet shelves full of expensive hand bags.

Re: S&W Anonymous.

We meet at the local LGS during normal buisness hours, bring a state issued ID, we have plenty of 4473s...

My sister once accompanied me to the LGS.
Before we went in, I said to her, "Don't be surprised if they know my name here."
She cracked up when about six employees shouted "Hi Cam" across the shop.

Well, my current girlfriend and I have reached a kind of stalemate on this topic, as long as I don't bring home any firearms, she doesn't bring home any more animals. It's been holding recently, but we just put a dog down a couple weeks ago and another one isn't looking too good. It doesn't help I just put in a bid for a S&W 1 1/2 online at a local gun auction, I'm kinda hoping I get outbid and we can kick this can down the road a little longer.

When my wife asks me "How many guns do you have?", I usually answer "Not nearly enough."

If I feel she is in a good mood, I will tease her and ask "which caliber?"

In general, i have found that when the subjects of fishing equipment, boats, handguns and rifles come up, there is never a "good mood " and teasing would not be the way to go

So far, I have been able to get by with a non answer, or the usual "More than I need!"
The same thing here, can be guns or wrist watches.....That is a new one, isnt it?, how much did you spend on that, Do you need another? Why? I tend to avoid this discussions with my wife, anyway I always lose......

All very good points. (and I love your location!) I seem to go in spurts, like a few months where I seem to find deals around every corner. Then I think "What else could I find that I need that I want? Nothing. I'm good to go."

Time goes by, and I start looking through old threads and suddenly I see I don't have enough J" frames. While searching for "J's", I see some really nice "K" frames.

Then all too soon I realize, I have duplicates and no room.

Then a couple of years ago I gave up buying a gun or two & bought another safe. While transferring and fondling my toys, I see I am missing a few 3rd generation Smiths, ............ and they quit making those ya know.

Then I decide the pre-locks are fewer and farther between, and I better get more while I still can.......... and I'm missing a few JM lever guns,........ and they quit making them ya know ............

There is no cure. At least I don't collect, shoes.

I spent all my money on guns. Then I had to save up for a safe. Well I now have two safes and still not enough room for all the guns. I still spend every dollar I can on guns. I’ve even started putting some in my wife’s China cabinet. I might get evicted soon but I’ll be well armed. All jokes aside. I really do have a couple 38s in her China cabinet. No cure for me

Oh, she teases me back, when she tells my brother "Really, his hobby is collecting safes."

I've found that age seems to be a cure. That, and running out of room to store any more after you've sold everything you don't want anymore.

It will run its course....just give it another 20 or so years.

The challenge for me was to find something interesting at a good deal. Well, all the good deals are no longer good deals. Prices have more than doubled from when I began collecting.

Default Just one more!

Just one more. And here it is -- today's M-19 winner off Gun Broker. I started bidding because I liked the stocks. I think there are 5 other new additions to the herd, four revolvers and 2 rifles since July. There have been too many good deals.

I recently acquired a Sig P238 HD and find it a great shooter.

So I may have been exposed to another illness.

Or should I call it a Signess.
