Default Charter Arms Classic, .44 Special

My new Charter Arms Classic, .44 Special.

First time at the range. Shot this group at 15 yards with PMC 180 grn, JHP (it will be my ammo of choice.

Interesting enough, I first shot some 240 grn, lead FN, Magtech cowboy action ammo. It recoiled harder, shot about 4" high at 15 yards, and could only get about a 3" group.

I really want a S&W .44 Special in an "L" frame configuration. Someday I hope to find a model 24 although I think they were "N" frames. I do have a real nice 581 that I could get converted to a .44 Special but I hate to ruin the 581.

Just thought I would share this with you. If anyone has a line on a S&W .44 Special, lease PM me.

Trooper Joe

I love my two Charter revolvers (Bulldog and Pitbull). Funny enough though, my Bulldog shoots silly low (6"+) if I use the sights "properly".

I am an avid S&W revolver fan like most forum members. But I also real enjoy my Charter Arms Undercover. Ya just can't beat them for the money. This is a Bridgeport ca. 1970

I've never had a Charter Arms but have been curious about them for years.
Do they hold up well to regular shooting?

Although I no longer have a Charter Arms, I have had two in the past, a .44 Bulldog and a .38 Undercover. They were both fine revolvers, and I greatly regret parting with them. I bought the Undercover in 1968, and the Bulldog a couple of years later. They were the first guns that I reloaded for, with the old Lee loader kits.

Best Regards, Les

I've never heard of one that didn't stand up. They're not as refined as a S&W, but tough as nails. My son has an old Bulldog that's bounced around in his ranch truck glovebox for years, and has dispatched many a critter, old fence posts, and salt blocks.

I have a Charter off-duty, a 357 mag target and a 6 shot police special 38. All great guns. The police special is a 20 ounce 6-shot than can be changed from D/A and S/A to D/A only very easily by changing the hammer. (about $25) Takes 1 minute....The most underrated revolver on the market. Great trigger and grip

I'm a fan of the old Charter Arms. Have an Undercover 38 spec, good revolver. Always wanted a 44 spec Bulldog.

I have not once regretted buying my Charter Bulldog 44 special. It has been my main carry for several years now. Bang for the buck it is greater than expected.

I have never shot a S&W 44 so I can't compare.

I've got three and like them just fine.

This .44 Bulldog I bought NIB about 20 months ago. It has become my daily carry revolver and I shoot it often. If I'm not carrying this I'm carrying a Glock 26 or 27.

.38 Undercover

.22 Pathfinder

You know...I read/hear this all the time, people regretting shedding their Charters, my father is one of them. He had a Bulldog in the 80’s, and I spent time with it back then. He sold it off and would say from time to time how he regretted getting rid of it.

There’s just something about a Charter revolver...crude, cheap, functional things that they are. A face only a mother could love, but not once has mine failed me.

Gee, that late-model Bulldog is impressive. Imagine a baddie trying to ignore those not-one-but-five open drainpipes staring at 'em.

I carried the original Bulldog and was supremely confident in the pistol and the caliber. Wore it (legally) in a Bianchi No. 3S Pistol Pocket (of course, because I designed it) and knew the package was up to anything. Did add the then-new (!) Pachmayrs, no fun to shoot with the issue wood grips.

I really know little about the newer Charters, but I had an early Charter Undercover .38 Special for awhile. I am also one of those who regrets selling it about 20 years ago. I do have an elderly lady neighbor who has one, and she has promised to sell it to me when she decides she no longer wants it. I always wanted an earlier .44 Special Bulldog "just because." Maybe someday.

Hey Trooper Joe, is that "classic" a new gun built on the old style?
I kinda like the grips.

I have this original classic Bulldog circa 1973 (Bridgeport manufacture)...

Big Charter Arms .44 Spl fan here. I can’t say that I have one of the Classic Type Bulldogs but have two of the more modern ones (2.5” Bulldogs) and like them. Wouldn’t pound a lot of warm handloads thru them but for the $ I think they’re fantastic.

Funny how a sedate wadcutter meant only for punching holes in paper looks mean when viewed from the front of a Bulldog '44 cylinder.

I have a Charter Undercover I gave to my grandfather many years ago, and now my grandmother has it. I haven't shot it in close to 20 years now.

As far as the Bulldog, I always wanted one but they don't make them in a traditional snubbie configuration, only the ported sightless "Boomer" which has no appeal to me. I do have a Taurus 445, which is a 2" aluminum frame 44 SPL snubbie, and I carry the 165gr Hornady Critical Defense in it. I shot a few 200gr Underwood Gold Dots thru it, but they were pretty hot for such a light gun. The Critical Defense is much more manageable and chrono'd just under 950fps from my Taurus.

...I own a Charter Arms Undercover Lite in what they call the Santa Fe Sky color scheme...blue anodized aluminum alloy frame...

...it has stainless steel hammer...trigger...cylinder and barrel...a polymer grip frame...cylinder that turns clockwise a la Colt...action that loads through the bottom a la Ruger...

...interesting little revolver...I like it...

...pictured below with my no dash Model 36...and my 1919 Colt Police Positive Special...

That is a Lyman 429352 that has been obsolete for many years. As C&L said it is a 250 Gr. flat-base wadcutter. Accurate Molds sells a virtually exact copy of this bullet mold for either hand or machine casting. Maybe where Matt's Bullets got their molds for this bullet.

I love Charter .44 Bulldogs.
I had a late 1980s Bulldog with a bull barrel that was shorter than the 3" original, longer than the Pit Bull underlugged barrel, and did not have an under lug. I regret having had to sell it.

It is efficient and is what I wanted in this holster. Nothing fancy, no frills, unlined, no dye just natural saddle tan. An inexpensive working holster and didn’t care if used damaged or distressed leather and made to my specs. Which it is and other than maker trimming the sweat guard a little after it was made, I couldn’t be more pleased, especially for $35 OTD.

He made another one for my SAA colt clone that turned out better IMO than this one. Lemme know and will post pic of it also. Same price for it too and a weeks turnaround for them both. I’m very pleased to say the least.

Yes, I am going to need to contact that holster maker, I'll google it. That looks like the one I have been imagining. I think I am going to replicate that package, gun and holster for my daily carry. I have been running into bears left and right. Just ran into a mamma and a cub this morning, 3 different encounters this week, and my 3rd models are so freaking heavy. Although the moment after you encounter a bear at 10 yards, the 3rd model literally doesn't feel half as heavy. Thanks for the good info! Pete

I've owned several Charter Arms revolvers over the years, both "old" and "new." I never had any problems with them. Good solid guns for the money.

I've only got one now. A Bulldog 44 Special from 1984.

Well, this thread got me so nostalgic for my old early 1970s Stratford Charter Arms .44 Bulldog, that I looked on GunBroker, and there, lo and behold was one that appears to be.....

That's right..."Eye-dentical"!!!

Well, I'll let you guys know whenever it comes in... I've sure missed that little guy all these years since I foolishly traded it off. As I mentioned earlier, it was the gun that started me reloading for the .44 spl., including molding my own bullets. I carried it a good bit back then as well.

More later.....

Best Regards, Les

Just now saw this one. I'm pretty interested in those little fellas, as you'd think, they really only have one purpose. There was a great write up and video over at Gunblast on thse:

Charter Arms "Boomer" 44 Special Five-Shot Pocket Cannon

He states he has some around the house here/there...pretty good idea, be it a bit on the expensive side.

The only thing keeping me from seeking one out is that I'd really only want one with Crimson Trace grips on it...and those silly things are darn near as much as the stinking gun at $190/set. Well...not really, but you get the point.

Yes, I have one and it's my EDC gun. I put Barami-style grips on it along with a BK grip adapter. It's easy to carry in a pocket holster or in a pinch, slip it inside the waistband, no holster required. I have no problem carrying it without a holster as it's DA only and I estimate the trigger pull in the 8 pound range. As you can see in the photo, I bought the black nitride version.

My favorite load is GT Bullets' 190 grain LHP with 7.5 grains of Unique. The picture is this load fired from the Boomer and recovered from the clay sand berm behind the target. Firing a full cylinder of these rounds will make your hand sting as the gun only weighs 20 ounces.

That the gun has no front sight is an issue for me; I found that if I sight along the milled flat top of the frame and aim at about the 7 o'clock position, I can put rounds into the center of the target.

I do wish that Charter would put a front sight on it; just a simple half moon blade or even a bead sight.

This is kind of my issue. To me, it's either a literal "belly gun", or I'd need to pop some crimson trace grips on it.

Sure, I'm happy to!! Thanks for the compliment!! .... Well, maybe I paid a little too much for it, but this one looked the most like the one that I let slip away from me all those years ago...the color of the walnut stocks even seems the same. Somewhere, I have the serial number of my old one...it would be interesting to see how close I came...

By the way...Trooper Joe, I hope you don't mind the thread drift, this is actually a compliment to your original post, it inspired me to get another Bulldog!! Thanks for bearing with us...

Best Regards, Les

I am next in the line to get one of these guns. I have a couple of guns I need to sell. I think I will just order one of the classics from Buds.

I've put a set of these original"target" grips on mine and like them pretty well. They're lighter than the Pachmayr Compacs that it came with, but the wood doesn't absorb recoil as well as the rubber.

I like the look of these grips and may see if I can find a set of them to try out.

I like them too although mine came with the wood target type. I found these CA marked rubbers at a LGS for $5 so no-brainer to try them out. Another thing I like about CA is their grip frames are same throughout their line from .22 thru .44/.45.
My apologies also to OP for any hi-jack or drift.

This thread should be called, "Where in the world is Trooper Joe?" ... Maybe I'm blind, deaf, and dumb, but TJ hasn't come back to respond to any comments or questions. Can 'thread drift' even exist if the OP goes to ... who knows ... Australia for the winter? ...

I'm pretty sure you can get them straight from Charter:

Grips - Combat Full Rubber | Charter Arms

They're pretty solid...but do take in mind that in my experience, the quality is hit/miss with them. They're perfectly fine on my bulldog, they were crummy on my Pitbull. They didn't fit well and would split apart when you'd grip them, pinching the skin on your palm. I landed up replacing the set on the Pitbull with something else.
