My apologies also to OP for any hi-jack or drift.
One of the things I like about these revolvers is that they came with real walnut grips. These have always been something special to me, and I was probably,y programmed this way as a child, to prefer walnut wood with blued steel. I have since learned to appreciate other woods, and to like ivory as well, but somehow I just never could warm up to rubber, despite its obvious advantages in reducing felt recoil, and increased "grippiness".

I did leave the factory grips on my most carried pocket gun, my 340 PD. So far at least. Eventually I will probably replace them with something more aesthetically appealing. I know that it's a tool, but there is nothing wrong with having attractive tools!

Best Regards, Les

Well, my Bulldog came in today, and it's a dead ringer for the one I owned back in the early 70s!!! I'm tickled with it, but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. As soon as I get a chance, I'll post a range report. This was one of the first cartridges that I learned to reload, and I still have all of the dies, and supplies I need to craft some ammo especially for this gun:

(Noticed the second turn ring...apparently caused by the pin just below it in the frame being too far out on the left side of the frame. Tapped right back into place, should take care of the problem.)

Best Regards, Les

I am very interested to hear about your reloading experience for this gun. I am super charged to get one, the classic just like you got. I need to let the dust settle on my finances at the moment but I should be in good shape to get one within. a month or so. And then looking forward to reloading for it. At this time I have only a huge pile of 240 grain LSWCs. I am hoping with a modest load of Unique I can find a good load for this small revolver, maybe 6.5-7 grains. Probably still a handful.

Range Repot on my new Bulldog....

Finally had a chance to function test the Bulldog shown above. I picked up a box of Ultramax 44 Spl 200 gr lead flat point ammunition yesterday and just ran 5 rounds through the little gun. Flawless function, very mild recoil (well, I guess these are "cowboy loads", so no surprise there). I was very pleased. Fired at 7 yards, standing, offhand, and single action. Aiming at the "X"...Jerked the first round down, but the rest fell in the 10 ring, and three of the five in the X ring.

(Disclaimer...I just had a tooth pulled an hour before shooting, nit my finest performance!!).

When I get some time, I'll try to do a little more shooting, and will reload a few round to test as well.

Best Regards, Les

Les, first time shooting the new revolver right after a pulled tooth! I'd say you did just fine. You have me thinking about a .44 now.

Ok you really got to me with this thread. I've been agonizing over augmenting my J frames with a CA for over a year now. At my age might be the last addition. For those who have more than one Charter and J frame I'm really wondering how the 44's compare with the 45 ACP Charters as big brothers to the Js I carry now. The 44 Bulldog Pug and the 45 ACP Pug look almost identical. Any one have experience with both? Both good defensive calipers...any thoughts? And the ringer in the selection...anybody with both the 44 version of the "On Duty" and M38/638/49/649 selection? That hump back is really tempting me if I add a 44.

I have a 638 S/W and a MagPug 357 magnum.. MagPug is of course a little bigger but has a better trigger and grip than the 638. The humpback conceals easier. My Magpug was the Target version with a 4 inch barrel when i first bought it . I found it hard to ride my bike with it in my pocket. Called Charter Arms and asked them if i could buy a shorter barrel for it. Told me to send it in. Shipped me a prepaid box. Two weeks later i get it back with a 2 inch shorter barrel!...NO CHARGE! Just love my new 357 MagPug in my pocket. Boom Boom Baby!

I own a CA .44 Bulldog with the bobbed hammer. The original rubber grips were fine, but I changed them out with CT laser grips sighted in for 50'. .44 Specials and laser grips make for a deadly combination.

Earlier this week I happened upon a very clean first year .38 Undercover. Almost bought it, but it had an issue with the trigger reset. Instead, I walked out with a like new in the box Taurus 85ss. I may go back for the CA, but I'm still on the fence.

This thread really makes me want to reload...which just isn't in the cards at the moment. I really think the Bulldog is a pistol that can shine when you really dial in what you're feeding it.

...that and even at $25/50...factory ammo is freaking expensive to shoot through the thing.

I spent some time today digging out the dies, some bullets that I had cast, sized, and lubricated awhile back, pulled my handbooks with notes where I had reloaded in the past, mans generally got ready to reload a few each of several different loads. Maybe not this weekend, but soon, I'll post a few range reports on some experimental loads for the Bulldog....

(From my last casting session)...Sized, lubed, and ready to seat in a primed and charged case! (Yeah,...I know, they look a little rough- I was a little out of practice)..

Best Regards, Les

First time at the range. Shot this group at 15 yards with PMC 180 grn, JHP (it will be my ammo of choice.

Interesting enough, I first shot some 240 grn, lead FN, Magtech cowboy action ammo. It recoiled harder, shot about 4" high at 15 yards, and could only get about a 3" group.

I really want a S&W .44 Special in an "L" frame configuration. Someday I hope to find a model 24 although I think they were "N" frames. I do have a real nice 581 that I could get converted to a .44 Special but I hate to ruin the 581.

Just thought I would share this with you. If anyone has a line on a S&W .44 Special, lease PM me.

Trooper Joe
HEY TROOPER JOE, THAT'S A NICE LOOKING REVOLVER OFFERING DECENT PERFORMANCE. I AM GAINING INCREASING RESPECT FOR THE CURRENT PRODUCTION OF THESE REVOLVERS....

LIKE YOU, I YEARN FOR A 3" L FRAME IN .44 SPL.........
