Default I have purchased an ugly gun.

One thing I've been missing for ages is a decent 22lr plinker revolver. I came across a clean Ruger LCR and had to put it on layaway. It is a purely purposeful design. It has no redeeming features aesthetically.

(Ruger stock image)

I plan on putting a set of these grips on it to spruce it up a bit. They make the looks of the thing tolerable.

It'll make for my first non S&W revolver.

Wife has carried one for a few years now in 38 spl. Very nice trigger, light weight, good grip shape and accurate enough. Hard not to like it no matter what it looks like.
Ruger makes a LCR-X with a 3" barrel that's on my " when I win the lottery" list.

That's actually the entire purpose for the gun...practicing double action snubbie shooting. The harder the better...though this is better than most rimfires in this size.

As it is I have what I deem essential and those I consider favorites.

Thanks. I wish it was true. I was a constant trouble maker but excellent behind a gun.

I've learned through enough experience that guns that are easy to shoot do very little in improving skills.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, ever since I first laid eyes on the LeMat Revolver it has become the benchmark of ugliness to which all other firearms are graded, and so far, I've yet to see a firearm come anywhere close to matching it.

The LeMat (Cartridge) Revolver, presented in as shiny a finish as possible so as to be 100% fair, even if it is highly unlikely to ever encounter one in such fine condition. This ugly duckling was essentially the Taurus Raging Judge of the 19th Century, it held a staggering 9 rounds of ammo in its massive cylinder, plus a single 20 Gauge shot in the lower secondary barrel.

Good luck finding a firearm as aesthetically ugly as that, especially a modern one which is still in production.

I have a LaMat cap and ball revolver by Navy Arms. 9 shots of 44 and a 16 gauge (.69 cal) 20 gauge is .62) center barrel. The originals were 9 shots of 41! For a repro of that time frame it is a thing of beauty and the deep blue is something you could get lost in!

The original cap & ball LeMat Revolver is more "unique" than ugly, it's specifically the later Cartridge LeMat Revolvers which are outright ugly, IMO.

The original (cap & ball) LeMat Revolver for comparison.

I have a Ruger LCR 357 and after seeing some of the ugly gun pics here I think my LCR is gorgeous. I don't believe there is a better trigger on a revolver made today than the LCR has.

It doesn't take a pretty gun to defend yourself. It just takes a reliable and accurate gun that can be concealed easily if necessary. LCR 357 fits that description for me.

That is almost identical to my Navy Arms model. I prefer the Cavalry model to the Navy model. That sure was a lot of firepower for the timeframe!

Heck, 9 rounds in a revolver is still a heck of a lot of firepower even by todays standards.

Seriously, the highest capacity revolvers chambered in serious self-defense cartridges that I know of are 8-shot .357 Magnum revolvers like the S&W R8 and the Ruger Redhawk 357, and they don't have a second barrel with a single load of shot either.

Like I said, the closest approximation I can think of to the LeMat Revolver in modern times is the Taurus Raging Judge, a 6-Shot revolver chambered in .454 Casull with an extended cylinder which allows it to accept .410 Bore Shotshells as well. Both are massive revolvers which offer a lot of power, but at the cost of being extremely large, heavy, and expensive.

I don't think it is ugly, just different. Cool concept to train with it too, given the aforementioned.

I bet if a fella (or gal ) knew how to shoot and took their time, you could get minute of pepsi can out of it from 40 yards.

I just turned down a 22 LCR on a trade last week. It was NIB, guy wanted to trade it against a Win 94. I couldn't see much use
for it. Had it been 38 I probably would have traded him. It's not
a plinker, like someone said it would be good to practice DA. I
looked them up and they have 3" adj sight model. I would still
be hesitant, with that DA pull the sights may just be window
dressing. Might be a winner "kit gun" if it had SA option.

One of my first pistols (I bought five when I turned 21) was a Ruger P89. It was a decent gun and smooth shooting. I shot the hell out if it and it never failed me. It was never one of my favorites and the wife took it from me eventually. Ruger firearms tend to be function over form kinda guns, and that's just fine. If I didn't find a CZ I liked better it would've been a keeper.

I still see new Rhinos for sale at gun shows, so I guess someone must buy them. Their sole redemption so far as I can tell, it the straight-back recoil which improves controllability. I have read that they are a mechanical nightmare inside.

I picked up the S&W 43C which looks a lot like your Ruger. Got it specifically for picking off moles in the yard of which we have LOTS. So light, even loaded that you forget you are carrying it, but a very nice shooter that lets you forget the 20 LB trigger pull when that mound in the lawn starts moving.

As long as we're still on the subject of ugly firearms, here's a couple more that make the LCR look far more aesthetically pleasing...

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Dardick Revolving Pistol! A highly unconventional combination of a magazine-fed semiautomatic and a revolver with weird triangular cartridges to boot.

But wait, there's more...

The MIL THUNDER 5, a monstrous hulk of a revolver chambered in .45LC/.410 Bore as well as .45-70 which predates the Taurus Judge by a decade. Needless to say, these revolvers were not a commercial success, and are now something of a collector's item.

Last but not least...

The MBA Gyrojet Pistol, a strange little pistol from the 1960s which fired miniature rockets which was intended for use in Outer Space. Unfortunately, the firearms were extremely expensive, (why is anybody's guess when they were made out of zinc alloy) as was the ammo which had to be precision machined so that the jets would rotate the rockets in flight, and had extremely limited stopping power at the muzzle since unlike conventional cartridges it didn't reach full acceleration until after the rockets had left the barrel and burned up all of their fuel.

Based on the title of this thread, I thought the OP had bought a Hi Point.

Since I own two LCRs and a Rhino, it's evident that I'm more interested in how a girl can cook . . . but I was fortunate to marry a beautiful wife.

"I have purchased an ugly gun."

When the "yogurt" hits the fan it'll look pretty good.

I looked at S&W, but don't like the alloy cylinder or trigger pull...their new stainless J frame 22's
are only available in a 3" barrel, and the classic ones sell for a fortune these days.

Admittedly, if the "stuff" hits the fan I've got far more capable firearms to go to...but it would certainly be better than nothing.

Well, the trigger does have some nice curves to it.
