Question Back a Ways I bought a M-66

Gun is seriously challenged finish wise. Carried by a cop for quite a few years. Was in the box and got it for350 bucks Yesterday at the gun show(Billings) I made a trade. Hope it was a good one. Dealer there had a Winchester 94 AE rifle in exc condition in the fairly rare 357 Caliber. I made an even up trade with him. Gun is exc condition with no finish challenges. I put a few rounds down the bore today and it shoots pretty darn good. Only rifle I have bought in months. Daughter wants to glom onto it already. I think not. I gave her a Marlin 1894 in 44 mag already. What do ya all say? Decent trade? If I can get a decent pitcher I will post one or two

Last year a neighbor showed me a Marlin 357 lever action he bought for $650. I would say the Winchester is at least that & probably more. I sold a Winchester 94 AE large loop in 44 magnum a couple of years ago at auction for I think $850.

I reckon you did well on that trade.

If you are happy then its a good trade. The older I get, its becoming more of "what's it worth to me" instead of "what's the market value?". Especially if you don't plan on flipping for a profit, what does it matter? I've got guns I could turn a heck of a profit as well as a few that I might not come close to getting my money back, but I could care less. If I'm enjoying shooting a gun then it becomes more valuable every range trip.

The Winchester may well be worth twice as much as the 66.

Well Eddie, I guess you are right . Shooting the rifle was kinda neat. No recoil to speak of as the darn thing being a long bbl'd gun is pretty heavy. I never shot the 66. It was an early one with the SS front and rear sights. It would really be neat if this thing was chambered in 357 Rem Max. I'd also like to have a 1894 Marlin in 327 Federal.. I have a 44 mag and a 41 mag

I have a Winchester Trapper(16 " barrel) in .357 magnum.

Is it a pre-safety, cross bolt or the tang safety model?????

Great fun little rifle...... I added Skinner barrel peep Sights..... for my old +60 eyes.

Ballistics by the inch gives great performance from the .357 out of a 16' barrel..... approaching 30-30.

The early all stainless/sights 66s do tend to bring a collectors premium... but yours sounded a bit carry worn..... but it's stainless so can't be too bad!!

I'd say you did well on the price side the Winchester would be about $200 more than the 66 as you described it.

You did great, especially if it was a 4 or 6 incher.

The 66 was a 4 inch gun. The Winchester does have the crossbolt safety but I'm not much of a worrywort about such things. I do have a set of rings and bases for the darn thing...but doubt I will put a scope on it. I did pretty good at that gun show. Bought a steel tube Weaver T-10 scope in almost new condition for 100 bucks as well as a 2nd Weaver steel tube 3-9 AO scope(with the TV ocular end) for 35 bucks. Beautifully clear scopes but they are heavy with a capital H. I also got a really nice pair of Leupold Binoculars 7x30s in the box for 50 bucks. I am not a big buyer of optics but that was 3 scopes and a pair of binocs in 3 days. Another gun show this coming weekend but I'm going to be on the selling side at it. I hope I sell more than I buy this time. LOL
