I guess you could call my 870 slug gun a "riot" gun. 20" barrel and screw in chokes.

I'm loving this thread. Pictured below is my one and only humble example of, (if it counts as that is).. a Riot Shotty. It's in reality closer to a trench/style shotty sans a bayonet lug!
I picked her up for $375 out the door and rescued it from it's purchased configuration; which had a cheap/goofy rubber pistol grip and matching pump forearm.
I ordered a mint stock and forearm set from Numrich and promptly swapped out the cheap stock/forearm set and now it's much more usable in it's current format. This is especially true with 3", 15 count, Double OO Pellet loaded Winchester Buck rated at 1600fps. I installed a GG&G front sling attachment and a QD sling swivel on the buttstock. I left the sidesaddle shell carrier as it's quite usable and has good retention for 6 shells. Lastly, I installed a Mossy Heat Shield after running two full tubes at a sillouhette plate course and making the mistake of laying the barrel in front of the receiver over my shoulder after emptying the tube with the bolt and pump locked in the open position. Burned thru my T-shirt so bad I thought I was holding a branding iron on my trapezius/shoulder. I replaced the goofy fiber optic bead for a stock brass bead as well and have a Magpul MS1 dedicated sling for her. Lastly I replaced the magazine spring and follower with new ones with a tad more tension for more positive and smoother feeding. I like her a lot. I got the Mossy after trying to source an Ithaca Model 37 Police Special with a full tube with zero luck. I think it's a pretty good substitute but am always on the lookout for an Ithaca!

You're a wise man. We were issued those, too and they kill on both ends fired from the shoulder. I actually preferred hip shooting them.

Years ago, I had an Ithaca with the long mag tube that came out of a Chicago squad car. The barrel was full of cigarette butts and gum wrappers. I cleaned it up and gave it to a good friend when he moved away.
I now have an Ithaca with the deer barrel with rifle sights. I also have a Remington 1100 SF with a 20" barrel. There is also a Winchester 1200 with a field barrel. I have looked for a short barrel, without any luck. I found a short 1400 barrel once, but it would not quite fit.

I don't have a factory riot gun but I have a 870 & 1100 slug guns
Also a Brn A5 cut down into slug gun and a 97 Win I cut to a little
less than 24" ( barrel was Bubbaed) and had it threaded for screw in chokes. Last, a 18 1/2" barrel H&R Hammerless SS 12g
beater. I don't need no stinking riot gun!

Yep, Remington 870 and a Winchester 1300 Defender. Plus a few cut to
riot gun length like my Winchester mods 12 & 25 and a JC Higgins (High
Standard). For fun try a round of Trap with a pump gun with an 18" cyl
bore barrel. It's good practice for learning to shoot very quickly and hit
something.

Have an 870P (20”) and a newer (early 1990s) Ithaca 37, which I had cut down to about 20”. Latter has a vent rib barrel, which is why it is about 20”...
Had an 1897 Riot copy, and still have a PW87. The PW87 is definitely handy enough to qualify as a Riot gun.
Only thing I have better than a traditional Riot gun is my TAC-14...

I had a Remington Model 10, 20"bbl,, and a Stevens 520A 20"
Still have a Winchester M97, 26" cyl.
Not actually a Riot, Win called the
configuration a Brush Gun. But it's plenty handy.
They were all orig Field guns with 28" & 30" bbls that I cut down, moved the bead back, ect.

The way I understand what happened is as the safe door was forced open, the barrels slipped between the door and the safe body at the hinge side. As the door reached it's maximum end of the arc, the barrels were pinched
The owner of the gun shop sold me the piece, with the original box for $100.

I have only one. A Hawk 982. 18.5 inch cylinder bore, polymer stock, five round magazine tube. It's a cheap Chinese made knockoff of the 870, but it's a very robust gun. Well made. Smooth action - maybe smoother than the original (at least that's the case when compared to my 20 gauge 870. 100% reliable through several hundred rounds of mostly birdshot, with some buck. 3 inch chamber. Disassembles exactly like an 870, and most of the parts are interchangeable.
Did I mention it was cheap? Bought it for under $150 new about six years ago. It's not fun to shoot, though. My shoulder is sore after a magazine full. Still, I'd rather have a sore shoulder and be alive if I ever needed it.

I just have an old beater S&W police riot gun behind the bedroom door. It's nothing special. The first round is a beanbag, followed by buckshot if that didn't get the point across.

I have a '97 Winchester cut to 18 1/2". In the tube, two 00 buck, followed by three slugs. It wears an ammo sling full of slugs and 00 buck.
I used to carry it in my patrol car.

Here’s my Remington 870 Special Field 21” barrel that I inherited from my Father-in-law. It’s from the 80’s. I had an extended mag tube on it at one time for home defense but have since taken it back to factory setup.

Here's a 16 gauge single shot I chopped down to just over 18".
I never saw a long barrel shotty I didn't want to chop down.
And here's a Vang Comp 12 gauge I bought about 2 years ago for $450. Didn't need another 12, but it was a heck of a deal for all the work it had done.

I've got a few more, but these are the only one's I've got pics of.

I actually love it. I shoot mostly 1-ounce slugs from an 870 Police Magnum. I have found that they are a freakin blast from that thing.
But it's spendy to shoot a lot of slugs.

I don't have any pics because I'm terrible at that.
Mossberg 500 8-shot.
Mossberg 590.
Mossberg 9200A1 (Jungle Gun).
IGA Coach Gun Deluxe. Not a riot gun, but it's short, handy, and effective.
My Jungle Gun is a funny one. Chambered for 2-3/4" and 3" shells, and the barrel is threaded for Accuchoke tubes. Came with a modified tube. I bought it second hand. It had a Choate mag extension and follower when I bought it. I bought and modified one of the clamp on sling mounts to use as a support for the tube extension. I also installed one of the fiber optic front sights that is a rod mounted on a split plastic tube that pops onto the top of the barrel and has a notch in the front to keep it centered with the front bead.
All the info I ever found from Mossberg indicated 2-3/4" ONLY and fixed choke barrel (cylinder bore, IIRC).
However, my barrel is clearly, factory stamped that it takes both shell lengths and that it is an Accuchoke barrel.
It is the heavy barrel, just like the other 9200A1s.
The label on the end of the box indicates also that it takes 2-3/4" and 3" shells and is equipped with an Accuchoke barrel.

Posted quite a few years back, so I will post it again. It is a first 6 month production wingmaster with a dated XX 20” riot barrel and serial number barrel matching the gun. My great great uncle had a tang safety added to it.

The 870 Express doesn't get much love here it seems. There are only about 3 parts that are different on it than what are on a Police model. They can be upgraded for about $35. They take a little longer to get broke in because the parts aren't polished but firing a few hundred rounds will generally fix that. And the finish can be made to prevent rust if you know how. I have one I trust completely.
I have a second riot gun. It's almost a clone of the 870. It's a NEF Pardner Protector. It's a Norinco copy of the 870 except the barrel lug is in a different spot. You can swap parts with an 870 except for barrels. That gun is very nearly as good as the 870. It's a little heavier which some might think is a good thing. It functions perfectly.
I keep 00 buck in one of the two and slugs in the other. I live where there are a good number of black bears and they tend to want to threaten me when I cook on the grill. So I keep the shotgun with slugs handy just in case. It's never gotten past lip smacking threats but they sure do want what I'm fixing and they will try to scare me away from it.

Update 1/13/19 Pictures added, See Post 160 +161
UPDATED 1/13/19 Several digital images added see posts 160 and 161. Photography by Mark Calzaretta (COLT_SAA on this forum).
Yes, a genuine U.S. Trench Gun Winchester Model 1897 serial numbered near the end of WWII.
UPDATED: Bought this from a Retired Air Force Colonel about 25 years ago. It is in such excellent condition, I wondered if it had ever been issued or one of the very last when WWII was ending.
PS: When I purchased it I searched for over a year to find the correct Winchester bayonet in the same or near condition as the 97.. I finally found it at Sarco (New Jersey) back in about 1995.

My riot gun
I've had this Smith and Wesson 3000 for many years. Haven't fired it in a while - the recoil pad is hard as a rock!

Yep.
My 870 Police tucks away into its nook by the bed each night, ready for instant action. Going to eventually run ghost ring night sights on the bbl and maybe have the gun cerakoted.

Easier said then done. But Colt_SAA is coming over this weekend to photo a few for me. Perhaps we can get to this one, too.

Will this do? I made this up a long time ago (1988). It is my copy of a USMC M870 MK1. I found the barrel, extension tube and front sight at a gun show in S.Calif, while stationed there. I bought a Remington 870 Express at a LGS(Big 5 Sporting Goods?). Put it all together myself (not to hard) and used it teaching Combat Shotgun Courses to the Navy at Naval Station Long Beach.
