Default Survey -- Do you have a 12 gauge riot gun?

For a while I had more than two 12 gauge factory riot guns
These are the keepers:

1934 Remington 31

1937 Winchester 94

My favorite ammo for practice is the Fiocchi 12LE00BK, a 12 gauge reduced recoil, 00 Buck, bargain priced round (less than $5.00 per box of 10)

Remington 870 Police. All business. We used wing masters when I worked DoD security at the weapons station.

I need to vote "yes and no". I have a Remington 870 Sportsman 12, plain walnut stock, 3" magnum, parkerized finish, 21" vent rib barrel with RemChoke tubes, fitted with a leather carry sling.

With the IC choke tube it works great for the riot gun mode. With the Modified tube it shoots steel shot loads for ducks or geese just fine, and makes a fast handling gun for pheasants or grouse. With the Hastings extra-full turkey choke it has won every turkey shoot it has been to, even when shooting against custom made trap guns. The guys at my club always insist on one round in which everyone gets to shoot my old Remington, just to keep things fair, so I don't get to take home all the turkeys.

The 870 Wingmaster was the shotgun Remington made when the 31 became too expensive because of the many hand manufacturing steps. IMHO, the walnut and steel Wingmasters were spectacular guns even though they were made using modern mass production methods. The design was elegant and the execution flawless. The Remington 870 Police is a modern beast.

I own quite a few fighting Shotguns. A couple are placed in the house, one is in my vehicle and one is next to the night stand

My favorite is the Ithica 37. . . First off it is a bottom ejector so you never have to worry about tossing empty shells in your partners face. Because it is a bottom ejector it works great for righties or lefties. Most importantly, it does not have a disconector, so I can be VERY fast with it if needed

I have a nice old pre-68 savage that I also keep because it is a slam fire like the Ithica

I also have a Remington Police 870 factory folder. I keep it for sentimental reasons, it used to be the trunk gun for the Commander of the Florida Highway Patrol. When he passed it came to me. Truth is I have never shot it

I have a Winchester 1300 Marine that is an extra

I have 3 WP shotguns. A 14" Mossberg 590 in marinecote and a older pair of 12" Remington 870WPs. These are the older Remingtons that needed the elevator change to use the Remington 1 3/4" shells. The new 870s have solved the problem of double feeding the short shells

I also have a Franchi LAW-12. It is a mean looking thing, but I still prefer to fight with a pump

The last one is a Coach gun that I built a few years ago when this SxS had it's barrels crushed in a robbery attempt. It is only two shots, but it looks scary as all heck if you are on the wrong end and it can fire both barrels at once

This is my new night stand gun

I have one of the early Mossberg 590s, has the thin walled barrel.

I have an 870 that was cut to 20" by a previous owner with an extended mag tube, just picked up a 590 Shockwave.

I have two "riot" guns, 590s with receiver sights and bayonet lugs. Actually these might be considered trench guns because of the bayonet lugs. Laugh all you want to but I have bayonets for them along with bandoliers of slugs and 00 , slings and lights. I keep one in my truck and one in the house.

I also have two sporting shotguns. One is an Ithaca M37 and the other is a Model 12 Winchester that my maternal grandfather once owned. I will have to take some pictures as I think these are nice guns.

I have hunted with a pump shotgun since I was a boy and therefore feel very comfortable with one. In eastern N.C. you had to hunt deer with a shotgun. A lot of times we used buckshot because we were hunting in thick brush with dogs. I have also hunted a lot of small game and turkey with a shotgun. I have a pretty good handle on what birdshot, buckshot or slugs will do in my guns.

If I have to reduce my battery down to two guns, it would be the Ithaca and a .357 magnum revolver. I think I would be pretty well armed.

Also a huge fan of the Ithaca Model 37
while they came in many variations the Model 37 does have a few shortcomings,
1) Although the barrel is designed for quick removal the front mounting lug blocks any possibility of an extended magazine tube
(a long tube version was offered at one point pictured below but barrels wont swap onto the short mag guns without changing the magazine tube).
2) The pump carrier only has 1 arm (vs 2 on the 870), if that arm breaks (yes has happened to me) the gun is DOA.
3)While a few companies offered side folding stocks many years ago no top folding stock was offered AFAIK,
4) Lastly while the slam fire feature is neat it can be an accident waiting to happen for first time users that hold the trigger back while racking the slide.

IMHO that would count a lot. I know it's all about ARs nowadays but if things are headed south at 2:30AM, I want my riot gun. I am okay with being considered a curmudgeon and a luddite.

Engine49gun, I know this is another "is five enough?" deal but I would be feeling very well armed with a M37 and belt of shotgun shells.

Well...it's not tricked out like some I've seen. It's an old 870 Wingmaster Trap Grade with an 18˝-inch improved cylinder barrel.

I also have this little Ithaca Model 37 20-gauge, with an 18˝-inch cylinder bore barrel.

Neither one has any so-called enhancements, such as extended magazine, light, bayonet, folding stock, etc. Both great guns, though.
I also have a couple of these on hand. They're much simpler for Ms. Judy to handle....load, cock hammers, point and shoot. I've always heard that one of the greatest fears a burglar has is seeing a nervous woman at the top of the stairs with a double-barrel shotgun pointed directly at him.

I voted "Yes", what I have is an older Remington Wingmaster with a long vent rib barrel and several chokes, and also have a short "riot" barrel which can be swapped out fairly quickly.

Also have a hard plastic Remington case which holds the gun, extra barrel and has holders for the extra chokes and a tool, all in one container.

Best Regards, Les

I still have my 870 that rode with me for about 18 years of my career. It was my privately owned/department approved peacemaker. Outfitted with a surefire forearm light, scattergun technologies ghostring sights, jumbo head safety, six round sidesaddle, and Wilson +2 extended magazine. It was loaded with and still has six 00 buck in the magazine tube backed by six slugs in the sidesaddle.

I never had to fire it in the line of duty but it gave comfort to me and other officers on many occasions and caused many felons to alter their decisions.

Not 100% sure if it is a riot gun or not...but I do own a FN TPS I picked up new old stock many years ago. It’s a fairly nasty fella:

FN Herstal Tactical Police Shotgun Review

8 round capacity, internally choked for buckshot, factory ported barrel...pretty neat and odd shotgun...and it really does perform well.

Sadly, I hate shooting the thing as it kicks like a ticked off mule, so it rests in the safe until it is really needed.

Default Ithaca 37.......

Ithaca 37 gets my vote, too.

If I can't find one of those, I use this.

I only have a photo of one- this Wingmaster, but I have three others: A 20" Win. Model 12, an 18" Remington Model 11, and a 20" Russian SXS Baikal.

The only long-barreled shotgun I own is an old Iver Johnson .410, which I bought last year and still haven't shot.

When the 870 police turn in shotguns were on the market I bought two. One with the 18" barrel and the other with the 20" barrel. Both were covered with rust, most likely as a result of poor storage by the dealer as an leo wouldn't ever leave it that way. So with a large bottle of CLP and some 4/0 (0000) steel wool and some very old tee shirts cut up into rags started removing the rust. 4 hours later no rust and no pitting. Same for #2 except for a couple tiny pits it too finished up nicely. #2 also had a large burr where the barrel extension butted up against it's recess in the receiver. Pulled out my copy of Jerry Knuhausen's book on the 870 shotgun. It said this burr was caused by the mag tube cap not being tight which allowed the barrel extension to flop and batter the receiver. With the barrel off it was easy to stone down the raised metal and was polished with various grades of silicon carbide paper. Sanded down one stock set, sealed with sanding sealer, sanded slightly and finished with 4 coats tru oil. All are on wingmaster receivers and serial numbers are close to my old deer deer short barreled 870 for which I used for deer in the Irish alps" so called because a lot of folks of Irish ancestory bought homes and small hotels. Beautiful country up there in NYS. Both have been shot and tested and no problems. Both butt pads have been replaced with the small limb saver slip on recoil pads, they do indeed tame some of the bight. How about a single shot riot gun?. Old Eastern Arms break open or crack barrel 12 guage. Cut the barrel back to 21", installed a small brass round head screw as a front sight and had to make a new firing pin. Wood and metal left in it's old worn finish. That one also got the limb saver slip on recoil pad. Frank

I have an 870 that used to belong to the Akron, Oh. PD. Along with 2 Win 97's, and 2 Mossberg 500 20". The 870 is my BR go to gun. Since leaving the farm, It carries five 2 3/4" #7.5 @ 1325 sporting loads (for the neighbors safety!

While the Mossberg's get snubbed often the one I have the 18.5" rifle sighted smooth barrel on will clover leaf 5 at 50 yards with Remington slugs! That still almost a 2" group, but I've had AR's that wouldn't shoot that well! (and got rid of them fast!)

Not really a Riot gun, but it’ll do.....it’ll do just fine.

Remington Model 24903 Police Magnum

I also have a Browning Pump with 20" Barrel, and a Mossberg 500 Pump with 20" barrel. Total: 4 Riot guns.

Sorry, no photos of the Browning or Mossberg available at this time.

Does it still count as a"riot gun" if it has rifle sights?

Police trade-ins, Remington 870 and Ithaca 37.

That Coach Gun doesn't appear to be legal, so you may want to consider removing that pic. Unless of course you have it registered as a Destructive Device with the Feds.

It's legal for him to possess. There's a massive thread on it somewhere, which I'm too lazy to dig up. . .

Edit: I've got a Mossberg 500 and a Mossberg 590 in 12, 20, and .410 . . .

My old Winchester Defender is always in whatever vehicle I'm in. It's very dependable and easy to pack around.

That has been my experience with the Mossberg 590s as well. They seem like pretty solid guns to me. Mine do real well with the regular Remington slugs sold at Walmart.

Talking YES, WHY I HAVE NO IDEA.

A 12 & 20 gauge for wing shooting, another 12 ga for deer/hog/turkey & an 8 shot Mossberg 12 ga 590 mariner with 2 different stocks & pistol grip for the zombie apocalypse.

If you're anything like me, you despise shooting shotguns. I don't shoot skeet, I don't hunt...so there's really no such thing as recreational shotgun shooting in my life.

I shoot the FN enough to stay "fresh" with the thing, but let's be honest, fresh doesn't translate to proficient...so I'm not all that great with it. The thing just beats the poop out of you. I bought an AR years ago and really do know how to use it well, if SHTF, I'll probably go to it first anyway.

Scooter123,
I will not be removing the picture

That is a 100% legal firearm under the Gun Control Act of 1929 as amended in 1934

While it does fall into the NFA Title II category, it is not a Destructive Device also sometimes abbreviated as DD.

The National Firearms Act refers to that as a Short Barreled Shotgun also sometimes abbreviated as SBS

While I have no personal knowledge of the laws in your State or Municipality, it is a perfectly legal firearm where I reside.

I manufactured it from a damaged NFA Title I firearm as the donor platform in full compliance with all applicable Federal, State and Local Laws.

It surprises me that you would even think otherwise

So let us get back to the spirit of this thread and you can contribute by posting some of your Riot Guns and letting us know which you like

Don't have a picture of it right now, I have a Winchester 1200 with two barrels, one is a 27" screw in choke, the other was a 27" modified that is now an 18.5". I've thought about looking for a bayonet mount/heat shield for it.

Got a picture last night, here's my shotgun, may not be my first to grab for home defense, but I like having it ready.

I have a fondness for "riot" or "combat" style shotguns and I seem to have accumulated everything from a Benelli M4 to a chopped Winchester Model 97 some stuff in between.

I think my favorite though is my Ithaca Model 37, it is just perfectly balanced and incredibly smooth!

Default 870 Big Game

That’s a 870, synthetic camo stock, 20” Remchoke barrel with IC choke. It’s my hunting gun. Always loaded but Not in usual HD rotation, only out in rare circumstances. 9mm and 45s handle daily HD duty

Well officially they might not be true riot guns. For me they are close enough to that description! Sure as heck would be very well used if push came to shove involving a group problem, or something that goes bump in the middle of the night at my out in the boonies house!

I have a nine shot 590 and a 590M with a couple 10 round magazines to feed it. Both 12 gauge and legal as of now under NYS rather ridiculous gun laws.

No pics of these critters.

Smith&Wesson M-3000 Police Riot

Mossberg 590 with the sights and the bayonet lug

Mossberg 930 SPX

And a couple of coach guns. If I cannot take care of business with these I'm having an off day!

Since it said "riot gun" I won't use pictures of single shots or double barrels. I have this Ithaca:

I also have a couple of 870s but no pictures. I think one was destroyed in my April house fire but not both.

jsfricks shows us a picture of what I believe is a Remington pump action "firearm". Mossberg makes one of those, too. I have ordered a Remington for myself. It WILL do!

I like that Winchester model 12 a bunch!

Unfortunately all I have in the "riot gun format" is an old Police trade in "Wingmaster" 870 with an 18" on her. She isn't pretty, but works very well. It seems the more they have been used, the better they get. I also got a 26" Remington barrel that had been, believe it or not, threaded for Winchokes. Since I already had an old Win 101, I had plenty of chokes, Also have 3 Winchester model 21's of various gauges and styles.

The Remington has taken a turn at bird hunting when I am too afraid to take out the others listed above. The example I give is Chucker hunting in Nevada on steep slopes covered in shale. Sure enough - fell twice - and didn't worry about scratching it

I love that Ithaca M37 and that short barreled side-by-side.
Curious, how did the SXS's barrels get crushed in a robbery attempt?

I have always loved the caliber wars over what is more effective, .357 v. .44 mag v. .45 ACP v. .45 Colt v. .38 Special v. 9mm, etc., etc., etc.

Not much arguing with a 12 gauge and 00 buck!
