WW11 Hi power
Looking at a Nazi marked Hi Power. Verygood + condition. Matching outside but have not taken apart. Serial # 70973A. Fixed sights. So this would be a late war? He wants 1200.00. Sorry no pictures yet. Is this price out of line?

Seems a bit high. But without pictures can't really help.

That's about the going rate on a excellent example gun. Pix would help.

If it is in fact, in NRA "very-good" condition or better, waffenamts are crisp and clear, and grips are original, I'd be all over it for $1200 . Buy it and post some photos; us HP guys would love to see it

Notice these are shooting up in price also lately. Can be tougher to find now compared to 30 years back. In fact seems prices for most milsurps have gone up quite a bit lately.

When run of the mill Portuguese made hi powers are going for 700-800, and the Belgium made ones at 1000, if this one is right I would do the deal. Of course I would try to knock 100 off but would have the extra hundred in my pocket.

The Hi Power has never been manufactured in Portugal. FN ( Belgium ) Hi Powers have been inspected and assembled at their Portuguese facility since the mid '90s. FYI, Stephen Camps book page 181, paragraph 26.

At $1200, in VG+ condition, that HP would be coming home with me - after some haggling - of course!

Semantics....Belgium made parts shipped to Portugal to be “assembled”. Yes we all can read the side of the slide you call it assembled and I will call it made......and since I have both the assembled in Portugal and Belgium assembled......I come down in favor of the ones that don’t leave Belgium as parts.

Does it come with a period correct holster or magazine? That should add some value to it.

I have one of those too. FIL brought it home as a war trophy. I think it's a mid war version. Has tangent sights. Two mags probably period correct. There may be a holster for it if I can find it when we clean out the house in STL. There was one I saw many years ago that might still exist. I'm hoping to find war trophy papers for it. There's a chance of it. I gave it a good range workout about 30 years ago. For the most part it was under a mattress since WWII. I'd be interesting to know what it's worth but it won't be sold.

What with FN or Browning discontinuing the Hi-Power just about every Hi-Power will escalate in price. unfortunately I have a champagne taste and a beer pocketbook. I elected to buy one of the Israeli surplus Hi-Powers. !st thing to come off way the magazine disconnect. Trigger pull did drop down to where it was mildly acceptable. So looks like new springs are in order. So far shoots great with the Geco/Swiss 124 gr FMJ's. Frank

According to Vanderlinden's "FN Browning Pistols", the a-suffix sub-variant was manufactured between May-December 1943. This was the variant where the Magazine Disconnect was deleted (and left off from then on). The pistols now standardized on fixed (non-tangent) sights. Quality of fit and finish was declining by this point, and the author does not recommend firing pistols made during this period as parts no longer met prewar standards.
Hope this helps!

If you guys think $1200 is high for the pistol wait until the OP tries to track down an original holster and WaA marked mag. Ouch!
Pictures would help. If it is a nice pistol with condition the price will only continue to climb.
Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I hope to get it next week. Anything I should look out for? Did they mark the serial number on all parts or just the barrel, slide and frame?

I had a High Power with WaA that had not too much bluing left. I have two post war High Powers now that I personally enjoy shooting more but I am looking forward to your photos next week. If your gun is in very good condition with strong bluing it is well worth $1,200.

Serial numbers and WaA stamps are only on the barrel, slide and frame. I have a small parts set of a WWII gun left and just checked them, they are unmarked.
**** Just wanted to add, that the war time magazines have an aluminium follower and are WaA marked. The bottom of the mag has a tab, if memory serves me well.

Can't tell you what page it was on, but Stephan Camp also said that he saw many Portugal guns with more precise and better fitting parts compared to the Belgium guns and suspected it was due to the strict fitting demands put on the Portuguese and supervised by the Belgians? The Portugal HP's are bringing up to $1,200 now, the Belgium HP's are up to $2,400 now and who knows what an all original WWII with all the right accessories will bring now? HP's are going thru the roof at this time.

Most any WW2 issue gun in orig condition,,wether it be 30% or 90% is a collectors piece. It gets priced accordingly of course, but they are not going downward in price.
Originality is everything. They are getting scarcer by the year.
Keep them original. They are a great investment against inflation and in many cases a great investment that will grow at a greater rate.
That's all anyone can ask for when looking for something to put their $$ in to if that is your goal.
I've had several of the war time and a few of the pre war H/P's.
All gone now,,yes they are moved over to the 'I wish I had never sold' list. But that's the way it is.
They used to be about a $150 pistol. The last one I bought was the Austrian Police surplus early postwar mfg pistols. They were exc condition w/box and 2 mags. Mfg in early 50's,,,They cost $200 each in the 90's.
Try that now.
A pre-war Chinese contract FN tangent sight/slotted frame pistol was $150 w/50% finish.
A War-time production FN in about 60% condition was $100 in the late 90's. The shop that just took it in while I was there couldn't see any value in the gun. They made $50 on it.
and so it goes..
I would hesitate to shoot the pre-war and war-time HP's anymore due to the more fragile bbl cam slot design. Yes they do crack on occasion.
Originality is lost. A replacement bbl?, maybe you can find one, but it isn't the orig one. There goes the collector value.
New style cam, post war re-design no problem.
I sold my H/P's as I could not pull the slides back anymore, not even if I cocked the hammer first. They were just a paperweight to me.
Then came the 7rd capacity law to keep me and all the chil'ren safe.
But I still miss them, the pistols that is.

The first time I tried to pull the slide back it was very hard to pull. When I took the gun apart there was dried grease or cosmo in the slide tracks and barrel. The barrel is like new. I don't think it has been shot much. The mag has a small circle with a triangle? in it. I got it for 1150.00.

You and me both. Only I bought a finish challenged FEG instead of a Kareen.
Good news for me is that the trigger feels pretty smooth and is only about 3 pounds - even though it still has the mag disconnect installed. I'm thinking someone did some quality work to the trigger on mine. Either that or I got really lucky - or both.

My buddy picked up an Israeli Kareen this weekend at the show. Aside from the ugly import marks on it, it's in pretty good condition. He got it with two extra mags and a nice holster for $300. It will make an excellent shooter!
