Ghost ring rear sights on pistols. Practical?
I picked up a bunch of old (2008 - 2010) gun magazines a few weeks ago and I am slowly making my way through them. Yesterday my eye was caught by an add for ghost ring rear sights for Glocks. I did a quick google search and found that they are also made for 1911's (Brownells has a few for sale made by Caspian).
Now I have some peep/ghost ring sights on a few rifles. As I understand and experience it the eye relief is so close you don't see the ring as more than a blur and the eye places the front sight where it should be automatically. But does this work on a pistol?
How does the arms length eye relief of the ring differ from up close?
Is the sight radius on a pistol enough to be accurate?
My suspicion is that these are reasonable defensive sights at defensive ranges but would lack accuracy at target/competition distances. Has anyone any experience with these sights?

There was a outfit called Omega that made ghost ring replacement blades for S&W, Colt and Rugers. Never had the chance to shoot with one.

Shot something called the "hex sight" - really just a ghost ring/peep sight that was mounted on a Glock. Eye relief was normal and it was possible to shoot reasonably well, but the set up was not quicker or more accurate than conventional sights. I'd say it qualifies as a "gimmick"!
With all the modern optical sights available these iron versions are beyond obsolete.

Aro-tek makes a ghost ring rear sight for Glock pistols.
Tried one several years ago. Too busy for me but I imagine if you took the time to practice, they might be a benefit.

S&W offered them on Registered Magnums. King also produced them for Colt autos and others. Removing the sight disc left a "ghost ring".

I'm just too old school, would not get one. Same with lasers and flashlights.

I have a few Skinner (St. Ignatius Montana) Barrel Mount Peep sights ......mounts on the barrel dovetail....... much better than a buckhorn rear........ mine are mainly back up to optics....... except for the Winchester .357 Trapper
