Crime of the Week-
Winchester Police Department is investigating a B&E that occurred sometime between 9/21/18 and 9/29/2018 at the Kernstown Battlefield Museum. Suspect(s) are unknown at this time but the following is what was stolen and may try to be sold or pawned. We are looking for anyone with any information as to any strange activity or suspicious persons someone may have seen in the area of the battlefield within that time frame and also any information on anyone selling civil war era type weapons or the other items listed below.


Items Stolen:
1 – 1861 North Savage .36 CAL. Revolver
1 – 1858 Remington .44 CAL. Revolver
1 – 1860 Colt 4 Screw Army standard issued sidearm
1 – 1873 Saber model Sword
1 – Authentic civil war cartridge box
1 – US Navy Leather Primer Pouch “Navy Yard NY 1863” with two anchors stamped on the front
1 – 1857 Smith Patent Carbine
1 – Confederate double barrel shotgun
Unknown quantity spent civil war bullets

Some of us in Virginia have put up with all kinds of low-lifes trespassing our private lands, federal and state sites, and like MuleyGil out and out theft from small museums. I personally live within a quarter mile from the bronze marker for the Battle of Totopotamy Creek where 7000 rounds changed sides in 20 minutes. 50 yards in front of my property is where the Federal lines were, and 100 yards behind my house were the Rebel lines at one point in the fluid battle. At the Federal Park site across from the Bronze marker for the Civil War battle the battle included the home of Patrick Henry of Revolutionary War fame "Give me liberty or give me death" which was occupied by Southern women at the time of the battle and hence spared from destruction by Union cannon. Not so licky was Pole Green Church, one of the oldest in Virginia, pre-dating the Revolutionary War. Union agreed to leave it alone until Rebs were spotted using its roof for spotting Feds across the roads.

I do not wish to lessen the alarm that MuleyGil has posted about watching all "estate sales, local adds, but I really doubt the low-lifes would try to unload the stolen items around here.
Actually I truly hope they do because there is a large bunch of us that are continually on the lookout for just this type of "stolen" artifacts. There are at least 5 antique stores in my local 5 mile radius that have vendor booths specializing in Civil War artifacts and we all pretty much know if someone has "new" stuff for display.

I have numerous rounds, and "war wood", buttons, etc. recovered from my own property (no metal detector required..they float to the top over years), so far no weapon pieces or sword blades, but also blue cobalt figurines, clay pipes that have been dated to Revolutionary times. I cannot begin to tell you how obnoxious I find people still tramping my property in back with metal detectors and shovels and have to run them off, and I live in a 1970's sub-division! LGS and local gun dealers are ALWAYS suspicious of anyone wanting to sell artifacts, especially if it is a "quick sale" or shady story.

Kudos to you MuleyGil for informing the rest of us about this theft, and you can rest assured that myself and many, many like minded individuals in this area will be on the lookout. I truly hope at least some of the pieces are recovered soon.
