Buying mistakes.Heres mine. Springfield XDS 45. Bought it new closeing in now about 3.5 years ago. This is my only semi that ever gave me issuses. From day one first 500 rounds it wouldnt fire a full mag .Fail to fire or eject . Also this gun gives me real bad slide bites again only semi I own that has that issue. Ugg live and learn. Many years in carrying I guess we all have them. Its a real shame I like the feel of this gun in hand but clearly dosnt like me. I also found that slide bite is common for others on this model. I called Springfield and they dont have a fix for it.And claim they never have heard others with issuses. Hmm really?. My 1st and last from this maker. Ok lets hear your mistakes. P.S I posted issuses with this one before about a year ago and was trying to work threw them. My last trip to range had Xds fail to fire and eject again. Its in safe where it will stay for now.

Springfield, is pretty poor on CS, My brother had issues with a 1911 that failed feed, failed to extract, and the slide would not always return to battery. They wouldn't and said they couldn't do anything. I detailed stripped it and re-fit it together, as if it was a new build. Works fine ever since. Their people, just don't know how to put a gun together! And they won't pay for trained people who do!

My worst was a Citadel 1911 (same company as Rock Island, I think). The metal on the frame was so soft that I'd have to run a file inside the slot where the barrel lug goes about every fifty rounds, 'cause it would peen and tighten. Finally stripped it for what I could salvage and tossed the frame in a drawer.

Bought this one years ago when it was "The Gun of the Year." Never liked the trigger as pull was too long on first shot plus it shot low and to the left with the adjustable rear sight cranked all the way over trying to correct it. Wrote the factory and never heard from them. Tried to sell it but no buyer as I was too honest as to why I wanted to sell.


Use it as paperweight and bedside gun as I can hit a man sized target at household range. Wouldn't trust it any farther than that.

SCCY CPX2. I don’t shoot it anymore because shipping it back to the factory became too expensive. The only original parts left are the frame and barrel.

Hmmm...

I bought a new S&W 317 that shaved lead and keyholed targets. Sent it back to S&W expecting a "fix"... they gave me a new gun, no charge... a little 12 ounce 317 that dumps all 8 rounds into 1.5" @ 50 feet.

I bought a new Ruger SR9, my first ever 9mm. For the first 400 rounds I was willing to believe it was my inexperience with all things 9mm that was causing my FTF's. Sent it back to Ruger and they said "Nope, our fault." Got it back (8 days roundtrip with a weekend in the middle) with a complete new top assembly, no charge, and it's now failure-free for 2,000 handloads.

I thought I'd made purchasing mistakes, but reputable companies proved otherwise.

Carry.."hope" isn't a strategy

Thanks to everyone for sharing these experiences, I've always heard some rough stories a out Springfield but my buddy still swears by his XD. I've had a few used gun issues compared to how many I buy and sell I'd say that I've been really fortunate thus far. As far as new guns go, I don't buy enough new guns to experience a lemon I think!

I raised the subject of slide bite with some buddies at work some time ago. We reached the conclusion that if you are suffering slide or hammer bite, you're not holding that particular gun properly.

Release the Kraken

Got myself a little RG14 .22 snubby. It actually shot pretty well. That is until it didn't. The hammer pivot sheared off and when I took it apart and saw all the pot metal, I decided that it wasn't worth fixing. I stripped it and sold the parts to Numrich for $22.00.
Maked a great paperweight now.

I've bought a few lemons over the years. I have learned the hard way
that when buying a new gun it's best to look it over first rather than
having a dealer order it for you. Ordering is buying a "pig in a poke" and
has made me wonder if distributors have a few beauties set aside
waiting for the unwary.

It seems like about 20 years ago I bought a Colt's Gold Cup Series 80
for what I thought was a pretty good price.
Took it to the range to see if it would shoot. First shot the front sight
fell off.
Took it to Mike Rainey, a pretty good local gunsmith, and he put an
AO Big Dot front sight on it. Very nice for my aging eyes.
Then I found that I could not get through a magazine full without
some kind of failure.
About that time I read an article about Karl Sokol, which in part said
"when it absolutely, positively, must work, knowledgeable people from
all over the world send their guns to Karl Sokol".
I wanted to carry the Colt, but only if it was 100% reliable, so I sent
it to Karl. He did a total reliability package with all Ed Brown parts.
I also had him do his Mountain Tuff finish.
I had previously invested in Wilson mags, and I replaced the rubber
Pacs with Herrett's double diamond stocks.
Through what must be thousands of rounds it has worked flawlessly.
100% reliable.
I probably have more invested in it than a new one costs, but on
the other hand it is probably a far better gun than the new ones.

In Omnia Paratus

I've certainly traded for more than a few that I had to do a little tweaking to get them right but only had one I just gave up on. It was a S&W Bodyguard 38 spec. It would fail to fire 1 out of 5 rounds everytime. Sent in to factory twice, came back with same problem. Third time it came back worked fine through 50 rounds. Still didn't trust it, told a guy about it, he offered a ridiculous low price and I took it. He said it shoots good enough for a range gun for him. Everybody's happy.

almost had one just yesterday at my LGS, springfield 20ga pump, the owner feds some shells through before purchase and said it is going to the gunsmith, i'm not going to sell it to you, honest guy

My only experience w/Springfield was with their entry level 1911. It had so many trips back that when it finally got fixed I sold it and never purchased another 1911 from anyone & never purshased another Springfield product. I will say their customer service was very good but constantly having to access it was a royal PIA.

CC'd a 45 xds for several years after it came out. Never had any trouble until I tried the extended mags. If you are getting slide bite, perhaps your hands are large. The grip on the xds is pretty small, and people with larger hands often seem to have difficulty with small gripped semi's.

I've been lucky. I've never bought a gun that failed too feed, fire or eject. The only one I gave up on was a Kel-Tec P32 I bought on a whim--I was intrigued by the idea of a handgun that would look like a pack of cigarettes in a shirt pocket and weigh about the same.

I simply couldn't hit with it, no matter how I changed my grip. It just was a terrible fit for my medium-large hands with long fingers so I sold it for almost what it cost me.

My Glock M36 had jamming issues from day one. I sold it just the other day.

Took me a bit to get my DSA FN FAL dialed in too.

Today I'm happy.

I bought a Intratec TEC-9 in the early 90's because I was young and all the bad guys in the movies had one. What a piece of junk! Sold it to some other guy who wanted it for the same reason that I did.

The XD's are well made Croatian guns. I have owned two XD's in 9mm and neither one had ever given me issues. I even contacted Springfield for a replacement guide rod, just to have, and they were nice enough to mail me one free of charge, so I honestly can't complain about them. In your case I would have at least sent it back for the FTE issue.

My biggest buying mistake was a Bauer Bros. .25 acp Baby Browning (COPY) back in the early 1980's. Don't even ask why I bought it because I still have no idea!

Every other shot, the Magazine would fly out of the gun. At the time I could not get any parts or springs for it and since it was new I sent it back to Bauer (3 times) to no avail! I might have been able to use Browning parts but again, it was brand new and was their responsibility! They simply could not fix it and they gave me my money back. Shortly after they went "bust"!

Thankfully even though it was a mistake to buy it, I came out OK and got my original purchase price back - just lost out with all the aggravation.

Bought a new PPK (S&W) and couldn't concentrate while shooting it as it kept chewing up my hand. Sold it at a big loss and bought a used Beretta FS92 used. (I know, totally different guns). The Beretta has never had a problem.

Bought a new Taurus .380. Worst pistol I ever owned. Over 200 rounds and still jams and stovepipes. Sold it to a guy and told him about the problems I was having.
