Default Resurgence of the 10mm

Has anyone else noticed the resurgence of 10mm chambered firearms lately? Springfield just released the 10mm XDM today. Springfield, Glock, Sig Sauer, Ruger, Kimber, Tangfolio, Colt, Rock Island, etc. are all making 10mm pistols currently. I wonder how soon Smith & Wesson, H&K & FN will start producing 10mm firearms.

I am planning on taking a 6" Springfield TRP in 10mm out deer hunting this season. I'd really like to take a deer with it if I get the opportunity for a close shot.

Has the 10mm bug bit anyone else recently?

I've noticed and I'm glad to see it. 10mm Auto is a fantastic cartridge which has been grossly underappreciated for decades despite being an incredibly effective cartridge with little more recoil than a .45 ACP.

Now if only the .38 Super Auto would gain a resurgence in popularity then we'd really be in business.

I have an ex B-I-L that has 4 or 5 10mm's. He carries a full sized Glock for CCW often (Works in some bad conditions!) He's been an enthusiast for 10 or better years!

I seldom encounter brass, but when I do he still gets all of it!

I have loved the 10 since I bought my st st Delta Elite in 2000.

This year I added a blue one, and a gen 2 G20. The S&W 1006 was acquired NIB 3 years ago.

They are all ancient guns, but here in Switzerland we do not get all the recent 10 mm offerings.

Where are your pics?

And what do you mean recently . . . the various 10MM cartridges and their firearms is among my favorite topics

I have been shooting the 10MM Auto cartridge since the 1990s and the 10MM Magnum cartridge for about 12+ years now.

I am a huge fan of this cartridge for auto loaders, revolvers, single shots and carbines.

My current project is converting an HK USP Elite over to 10MM Auto. It will be threaded for use with a suppressor.

Previous Smith and Wesson conversions include my CS10s, 1013 and 1014

My Smith and Wesson 310 and 610 revovlers have all be opened up for the 10MM Magnum cartridge.

The most recent one that was built from scratch is this long slide I worked on a few summers ago

There are more . . . lots more and I am still have conversion and building projects in mind.

Not to mention ammunition.

I love the look of the Barnes all copper hollow points

Unfortunatly, this is not a full power loading and did not function in all of the 10MM Autos at testing time.

SIGs 2015 10MM Auto ammunition release worked great in everything we tested it in

The 2015 release of Federal's 180 JSPs are also full power

Then thee is the Bad Boy of 10MM Auto

Capable of putting 30 rounds of full power ammunition on target in 2 seconds

Yes, I am talking about the HK MP5/10

While these came out 27 years ago, they are seldom talked about

Yup, best kept secret at the FBI. There are hundreds of ugly dark blue Chrysler K cars floating around with one or two in the truck (mid-80's). I believe that they are still in circulation, but you would have to ask a current or recently retired agent to know for sure (maybe).

I was a junior in High School in 1988 when I wrote a term paper on the Colt Delta Elite and I had to interview someone as one of the references for my paper, so I interviewed the friend of the family who also happened to be my FFL! He bought one and I was enamored with the whole idea. I also read Jeff Cooper every month and that was all that I needed to be a 10mm guy even before buying my first handgun.

My first ever S&W semiautomatic pistol was a 1006. While I didn't actually own it until 1996 (I think it was), this was the pistol I talked my buddy in to buying back in 1992 when I was dirt poor and he was slightly less dirt poor. With the exception of four boxes of ammo to get us brass, I made all of the ammo for it and he sold it to me later.

Got my Ohio license to carry in 2008 and bought a Glock 29 to be my first every primary carry gun and I did exactly that for 7 years before I elected to carry something else.

The 10mm and I go way back, lots of great memories.

Most are still in service with the Bureau. There are various other Federal Agencies with MP5/10s still in their inventories as well.

There is a RFI out for replacements. I have worked up a subsonic 240 grain JHP 10MM Auto load for the integrally suppressed SMGs that might be the replacements

Default 10mm

Wife and I just returned home, and I just pulled this Glock 20 out of a bladetech IWB holster. The G20 is my EDC, this one is stoked with hydrashoks. I have carried and shot the G 20 since they were introduced.
I have been shooting the 10mm since it’s inception, started with a Bren 10. Have several Colt’s, a RIA, Ruger 1911, but the G 20 I carry everyday.
There has always been a group of us diehard 10mm fans out here, just like the 41 magnum fans, and the 16 ga. shotgun fans, which I belong to all three groups.
Recently bought some of the new Speer 200 gr Gold dots, these are going to be my new carry ammo.

Need to have one close by. Lot of power in a handgun with more than 6 shots

Yes, I've noticed it and I'm glad. I've only got two 610s and a G29 but hope to add more in the near future.

Eagerly awaiting the modern Bren Ten replacement. Having wanted one since my teenage years in the early 80's I am really hoping this time will be the one.

Currently my only 10s are a DE and Razorback. I want an early 3 or 5” 610 no dash and a G29. Funny how you couldn’t give 610s away when the first came out, now an example will cost you a small body part plus cash.

10mm is a great round. I’ve got a G29 for carry, a G20, and a sweet shooting Colt Delta Elite. I reload, and can go from mild to wild with the 10mm. It’s a very impressive round at the higherload levels. It’s also surprisingly soft shooting, too.

I really want a 5" M&P in 10mm, with a .40S&W barrel, and maybe even a 9mm conversion barrel. Unless S&W gets their **** together, I may end up with the Springfield XDm or maybe a RIA1911a2 10mmHC doublestack (42009) with a .40 barrel fitteed to the upper.

I have always felt that the 10mm Auto was an underappreciated caliber. It is to the semi-auto pistol universe what the .357 Magnum is to the revolver universe.

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, DNC, "little more recoil than .45 ACP", WAS HARDLY THE TERMINOLOGY USED TO JUSTIFY THE FBI DROPPING THE 10MM, SHORTLY AFTER PUTTING IT INTO SERVICE--IN RESPONSE TO THE MIAMI SHOOTOUT.....

IT WAS DESCRIBED AS A "WRIST BREAKER, THAT WAS TOO POWERFUL FOR THE FBI AGENTS TO HANDLE". PERHAPS THE PROBLEM WAS THAT FEW FBI AGENTS WERE EXPERIENCED SHOOTERS. AND THE LEAP FROM THE WORLD OF 9MM AND .38SPL, WAS JUST TOO GREAT TO MAKE.....

IN ANY EVENT, NEVER HAVING SHOT A 10MM FIREARM, I HAVE NO BASIS TO JUDGE WHAT THE RECOIL MIGHT BE LIKE. IN ACTUALITY, I HAVE BEEN ENAMORED OF THE M610, WITH THE 8 3/8" BARREL......

IMHO, THAT WOULD BE MORE VERSATILE---ALLOWING FOR CASUAL .40 CALIBER RANGE WORK, AND HUNTING WITH THE MORE POWERFUL 10MM ROUND......

I have a Glock model 40 I like a lot. I just need to take a blanket with me to the range so I can hopefully find a larger percentage of my brass. I have very little 10mm brass and can't afford the high brass losses I've had recently.

I really didn't start paying a to of attention to the whole shooting world until 2000 or so...but I have noticed this; the shooting industry, and many shooters themselves are like a school of fish...all flitting this way and that, changing direction on a whim and following everyone else.

Sometimes the school heads in a smart direction, sometimes it doesn't.

The current "direction" is 10mm.

On a mildly related note, I really like the 10mm, unlike some of the other whiz-bang rounds people flock to.

All I can say is that I shot my father's 10mm Colt Delta Elite years ago...and yes, the thing was unpleasant to shoot.

Was it a "wrist breaker"? No...the only firearm I've ever shot that I'd describe as that was the 500 S&W revolver I shot...once.

And in a pinch you can run 40's through them. My 1006 will function with 40's since the cartridge "head spaces" on the extractor instead of the case mouth.

My recollection of shooting the Colt Delta Elite with full power 10mm loads was that it recoiled very similar to what you would get from a 4 inch barreled .357 Magnum revolver shooting similar weight bullets.

You can do that in a pinch, but I don't recommend it as it stresses the extractor.

That I recall, that seems about right. The issue is how thin the 1911 is in the hand vs a revolver (depending on grips). That's a fair amount of recoil in a small strip.

I'll come right out and admit it, I'm not a fan of the 1911. I've never found the comfortable to shoot (yes, I owned one for some time). I'm not talking "comfort" as in it being painful, I just mean they never fit my hand well, I much prefer a revolver or double stack.

I've never quite understood the whole "you know, in a pinch..." angle. What kind of pinch would this be? End-of-days scenario where it's a pure free for all and when you go looting the Cabela's you take all the .40cal ammo because someone else already stole the 10mm?

I hear a similar selling point for .327 Federal Magnum revolvers also. "Well you can use .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Mag and .32 ACP as well! This is a FIVE caliber revolver!"

Ummm, okay. And there's a future for ya as a used car salesman too. As .32 S&W and .32 S&W Long are such short-printed ammo offerings that they retail price is typically catastrophic, and .32 H&R isn't far behind. And .32 ACP might fire, might misfire, and is a tremendous annoyance to extract and eject and BEYOND an annoyance if you hit the ejector and manage to get case rims under the ejector.

.38 Special in a .357 Magnum makes sense as .38 ammo and brass is common and widely available. All the short .32's are niche calibers that are typically scarce on ammo shelves.

But it still gets trotted out in .327 Federal discussions as if every .327 Federal gets shipped with a magic bonus.

If you are a handloader and you have 2,000 piece of .32 H&R brass, then yes, it is quite handy in your .327 Federal revolver. For the masses... a .327 Federal's true bonus for all those shorter .32's is that it is a safe tool for pulling down loaded ammo and recouping the brass. It sure beats a kinetic puller.

Never really interested in the XDs but BOY is that 5.25" model amazingly cool! Longer barrel than the Glock 20 to get more velocity, but not so long as to be unwieldy.

Thumbs up 10MM

Well not recently for sure, but I've been a forever fan of the 10, which I load exclusively for. Sold a few, but still have my Ruger 'Buckeye' special and this one. Quite by accident I discovered the 10mm magazines will also hold and chamber .45ACP. That being the case, just because I could I went looking and discovered I can get a .45ACP barrel for this gun as well. Think I will -- the best of both worlds. Holster for this will be on order with El Paso shortly.

Also load for and shoot the original 10mm, 38/40 in a couple guns.

That Javelina is a coooool handgun, J. R. WEEMS!

Barrel or no, I would not use that pistol to shoot .45 ACP. The breech face is not expecting a larger .45 piece of brass, I don't believe that it would work and it most definitely wouldn't do your extractor any favors whatsoever, and finding a replacement extractor should be possible but it isn't going to be nearly as easy as finding a standard .45 extractor.

If you want to fling .45 Auto from a pistol that looks exactly like that, you need the AMT Hardballer Long Slide.

Interesting! Some of us became enamored of the 10mm in the 1980s thanks to Sonny Crockett and his Bren Ten on Miami Vice. Recently, there was a long article in the American Rifleman on the "resurgence of the 10mm" but I do not recall any mention of the rebirth of the Bren Ten.

I would like to see that happen, actually. But I don't expect it; there are already plenty of 10s available. I might have to finally break down and buy one.

I love Long Slide 1911s

Sevens makes a good point about the difference in breach face. Also the difference in the extractor dimensions and the ejector.

IF the 45 barreled, long slide Javelina will go into battery with a 45 ACP cartridge, I agree that you are probably looking at a premature extractor failure

As Sevens points out AMT/IAI did make the Hardballer 45 in a long slide as well.

You might be able to find a slide and just swap complete top ends and the ejector when going between calibers.

Though truth be told, the long slide Javelina is much more of a rare find than the Hardballer long slide

You have forgotten that the 357 Magnum is a 4 caliber gun as well.

While it can chamber and fire the 357 Magnum cartridge as is labeled on the firearm and 38 Smith and Wesson Special as you have mentioned, you forgot to include 38 Long Colt and 38 Short Colt

Those are just as easy to find as the various 32 cartridges

You know "In a Pinch"

Haha, but the difference is that guys in gun forums don't preach the virtues of .38 Short Colt when trying to convince others what a great buy their .357 Magnum was!

I've got two of those Hardballer Long Slides and I'll agree that the Javelina is likely more scarce.

Stevens, you know, you could be right, and I considered all of what you say. Just cause it fits doesn't mean it would work. however my 10 loads are pretty much up to snuff as they are hunting loads. Never really considered to load them down. THANKS!!

10mm is popular with Glocksters for hiking on the Denver/Rockies area trails.
So.... we need one with the same/similar manual of arms as the M59 and PPKs..... and a fully supported chamber.
Or..... put a safety on a G20 and an aftermarket barrel with a fully supported chamber.
Have Tools
Can Read

Thanks.

It's happening as we speak. Warner Precision is very deep into the final product. The initial run is for 50. There seems to be a bunch of us aging Miami Vice fans out here. ...yes there is plenty of 10mm's out there, but they are not Bren Tens...

Especially if the factories would load it (.38 Super) like it SHOULD be loaded.

I've toyed with the idea of converting one of my .45 Witness pistols (Late 1990s large frame) to 10mm.

I'd be very happy with a 1006, 1066, 1086, 610, and a Star Megastar.
I'd love to see Marlin offer the 1894 in 10mm.

I've always thought the MP5/10 was a match made in Heaven.

I've never enjoyed shooting full power 10mm from a 1911 (Delta Elite) nor a Glock G20.
The large frame Glocks don't fit my hands at all, and hot 10mm loads from a 1911 just didn't turn my crank.

But, a 3rd gen Smith with fatter than stock grips? Mmmmm, tasty.

I just gave some likes in this thread, and came up with the idea of a "jealous" button. Some really cool pieces to be drooled over that are owned by a lot of you. I accumulated seven 10mms in autos and one 3"610 since '87.

My only 10MM is a Dan Wesson Bruin. 6.3" barrel. About as close to a custom gun I'll ever get.

Good, I'm not the only one then. It's not a comfortable combo with a 1911. I've never shot a modern semi auto in 10mm, I'd like to try one out if I ever have the chance.

The bummer side to this is that its probably going to drive 10mm prices a bit if the demand goes up.

Back around 1990 I acquired both a 1006 and a Delta Gold Cup (still own both of them)

Two things were very obvious, the Smith and Wesson 1006 was a much softer shooting firearm while the Colt Delta Gold Cup was the more accurate firearm. This was the same observation from the dozen or so of my associates that had the opportunity to shoot both firearms.

In today's world I am very fond of the Tangfolio offerings. This Witness Elite Limited is just fantastic at both mitigating recoil and making bullet holes touch each other. The Witness Hunter is not too bad either

The Witness Elite Match is priced nicely to get into a fine 10MM Auto handgun at a reasonable price

Another great Modern choice for the 10MM Auto cartridge is the SIG P220

Then who knows, perhaps Smith and Wesson will jump on the 10MM Auto bandwagon and re-introduce some of the old favorites

What is the story with a fixed blade rear sight in place of what was originally a Novak rear? This is actually the second time in about a week I have seen a picture like this on this forum. The other one was on a 4506.

The slide is cut for the Novak, it isn't obvious but can be seen in the picture.

As for the 10mm in a 1911:

Back around... maybe 2011? I had gotten one of the new production Colt Delta Elite pistols, it was stainless. Handed it off to a local gunsmith to install a beavertail grip safety and a flat MSH rather than the OEM arched one. It most definitely made shooting 10mm more enjoyable, but even still... I find most other pistols to be more enjoyable handguns to shoot 10mm over 1911's.

That wouldn't stop me from wanting to take shots from a Dan Wesson Bruin anyway!

When my agency transitioned from revolvers (M66's) to autos it was 1989/1990. The .40 S&W had not come on the market yet.
We ended up selecting the M1076, just behind the FBI's adoption of it.
That was our duty gun for ~10 years.

Somehow I ended up with copious amounts of 10mm brass and no small amount of ammo. Of course the duty load was Federal '10mm Lite', 180 gr. JHP.
Ended up purchasing my M1076 for cheap when we transitioned to another gun (the M4566), and as it had been shot ALOT, the Armorer went through it and replaced all springs and handed me a double handful of mags.

And, since I really do enjoy 1911's, did end up getting a Colt Delta Elite SS, shipped the slide off to Novak for a 'carry-adjustable sight' install.

Enjoy both these 10's - both classics in their own right.

As long as you put it that way...

Seven autos, eight including the 3" 610.

Colt Custom Combat 10 Delta
Colt Double Eagle 10mm
Colt SS Delta
Kimber Target II 10mm
Glock 20 Gen 2
Glock 20 Gen 2.5 with enhancements. I put a 5 1/2" Olympic Barrel in it too. Nice in CA with grandfathered 15 rnd mags.
1006
3" Lew Horton 610.

I love the 10. I love shooting the Smith model 610. Recoil is very reasonable. I also enjoy the Smith 10 MM autos. Still have a placeholder in the safe for a 1046 but I'm not holding my breath for that one.
