1940 Remington 510 Restored
Sorry for the bad pics. restoration of 80 YO gun done. The rust is gone and walnut stock with character cleaned up and done in boiled linseed and minwax paste wax. Decided to leave 80 years of character, and not reblue. I want to pump life into these not money. Son will probably get this one. I have a WTB for another if anybody wants to PM me. Bad pics, I know, but tough to get 25" barrel in picture.
Clicking on the pics for enlargement gives lousy resolution

Pete...That's a beauty. Here's another Remington from 1940 that I picked up a couple of years ago. Not a .22, but a .35 Remington caliber. It cleaned up pretty good...I keep telling myself that the modern Tasco scope doesn't look right, and sort of half heartedly keep looking around for a vintage scope to take its place, or even go to a peep receiver sight, but the darn scope just works real good, so I've left it on.
Guy over at the Remington Society warned me about the Hornady Ammo, said not to use the plastic tipped stuff in these pumps. But shoots great with the Winchester and Remington 200 grain soft points.
I still think ill do a little more clean up on the stock. In pretty good shape for 80!! Hope I look that good when (if) I get there!!
1940 was a good year for Remington!!
Best Regards, Les

Beautiful rifles. Personally, I'd leave the 510 as is. Wouldn't change a thing about it. Just get ammo and take it to the range. Then ... of to the woods/fields! For the pump ... looks great for 80 years old! Stock doesn't need anything at all except maybe a little BLO.
Really doubt the flex-tip would be a problem. At least to date it hasn't been a problem w/ .30-30 in Marlin 336. But to each his own! Will say, am currently looking hard at a 336 in .35 Rem. at a local pawnshop. They want $499 OTD ... maybe possibly take a smidgen less, but not likely. A .35 Rem. would work great in this area ... marsh and heavy low growing trees. Great cartridge! Also ... can reload it using .357 bullets. Nice practice ammo. Sincerely. bruce.

I am looking for another 510. This restoration thing is fun and rewarding. Feeling of accomplishment. Want one for me and 2 more for 2 sons. Love blued steel and dark walnut

rifling twist rate in 510 is not optimal for best accuracy when using .22 shorts - if you do use the shorts be sure to scrub chamber after each use - CB longs are a better choice then the short ammo to prevent chamber build up + erosion - make sure basement is well ventilated if shooting there - enjoy it + good luck in search for more -

I am not shooting in basement. I shoot nothing but long rifle ammo. Thanks for the info!

Get some Aguila Calibri , it’s only about 500 FPS . I shoot it out of my M-17 during our indoor matches and the noise level is almost nil.

the Aquila regular + super Calibri is not recommended for use in rifles by the manufacturer - many incidents of them getting stuck in rifles with tight bores - I have used them at times , but I make sure that they have left the bore before firing next shot - personally never had one stick , but two members of my club have suffered bulged + ringed barrels from using them - better safe then sorry -

Beautiful old rifles.I have a 512 which is essentially the same 22 with a tubular magazine that dates to about 1945 and I was given that by my father when I was 11. It used to travel everywhere and took a beating but never lost its tack driving accuracy. I always used shorts for squirrels and felt it stopped them faster than LR. On impact you heard a “whop” and they fell out of trees . The LR would zip through and they might continue on if not head shot, which was usual. I last collected game with it about 15 years ago when riding my ATV I saw some bobwhites which had been pen raised and weren’t killed while training my cousins dog the week before. As you know, pen raised birds run around with their head up and are easy to see.In the next few minutes I killed 10 in the field and cane break, all but one head shot. Yes,it is accurate and the wood repaired nicely, no pitting but brown patina. I love it.

The 512 is a fine rifle. I have a 1942 that I bought a year ago from a forum member that is like brand new. The color case on the bolt is beautiful.
I am going to restore some of these. I am interested in the 510, but will consider 511 or 512. I just restored a 55YO Mossberg that i bought from the original owner. Only because that model was my first rifle

clearly stated on bottom of every box in fine print -
direct quote taken from box -
[ these priming mix propelled projectiles MUST be fired only in handguns - when fired in longer barreled firearms such as rifles bullets may remained lodged in long barrel a subsequent firing of a regular .22 rimfire cartridge may result in injury or death in user or others ]

Another 512 owner here. Looks like it is in similar shape with the 510 of yours.

We have a Rem Model 34.
It’s not a looker like some posted here,
But it’s a really good shooter.
It’s got the old school screw on Weaver El Paso scope mount.
When we were gifted it, the original Weaver was unusable.
I put on a cheapie scope, bore-sighted.
And was amazed at how well this old gun shoots!

I rebuilt/renovated an old 513T years ago.
I bought it from my brother and it was a mess. The bolt did not function properly, the blue was all but gone and the stock was beat. The bore was very good though.
I had the bolt repaired, the metal stripped and re-blued. I refinished the wood myself. I had the dovetail for the front sight filled with a piece of stock, milled to the barrel contour and mounted a Leupold 6X scope on it.
It would shoot right with the Kimber American I had at the time.
Wish that I had never caved to a relative’s relentless pressure to sell it to them.
